Background / History

Kawafune was born into the Hatake Clan. His father died on a mission and his mother died in childbirth, leaving Kawafune and his older brother Sakumo to maintain the family estate. He used modern knowledge to improve the clan forge, establish Konoha’s largest armory, and raise the Hatake Clan’s wealth among the village’s highest ranks 2.

During a spar with Sakumo, Kawafune broke the Hatake Clan’s ancestral blade, White Fang. He commissioned Old Tie to forge Sakumo a replacement and sought Tsunade’s protection from his brother’s anger 2. His association with Tsunade also led him to begin training her younger brother, Nawaki, in discipline and swordsmanship 2 4 8.

Tsunade gave him the scroll for Senju Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God Slash. Kawafune mastered its spatial component through sustained experimentation with marked weapons, later using it as a central part of his combat style 8 12 13.

During the wars, Kawafune became a decisive Konoha combatant and field leader. He organized defenses at a Rain Country camp, defeated Hanzō and Ibuse, battled the Third Kazekage and Ōnoki, and fought the Third Raikage to obtain the Lightning Release Armor 47 68 100 114 185. His later acquisition of Wood Release elevated his reputation to the point that enemy shinobi considered him comparable to, or stronger than, a Tailed Beast 238 248.

He later served as Hokage, established the Ninja Academy’s Advanced Class, and pursued a plan to unify the ninja world 218 290 461. After Madara’s return and Nagato’s death, Kawafune committed himself to protecting the Tailed Beasts and confronting Madara directly 546 557 569.

Appearance

Kawafune is a silver-haired shinobi who commonly carries a long sword, initially the Eight-Faced Han Sword. In Sage Mode, red markings appear around his eyes; his body is often enveloped in Lightning Release chakra during battle 2 36 557.

  • Carries the Eight-Faced Han Sword during his early career 2.
  • Uses lightning chakra around his body and feet to accelerate his movements 2 36.
  • Displays red facial markings while using Sage Mode 36.
  • Later appears wielding a lightning-infused long sword in battle 557.

Personality

Kawafune is confident to the point of arrogance, regularly taunting opponents and relying on his strength to force negotiations on his terms. He was dismissive of Fugaku’s challenge, mocked the Third Kazekage during their battle, and openly provoked Orochimaru in social settings 6 100 335.

Despite this bravado, he is highly pragmatic. He prioritizes survival over possessions, abandoning a sword when necessary to evade Ōnoki’s Dust Release, and he prefers diplomacy when force is unnecessary, as shown by his approach toward Saiken and Elder Genji 114 252 532.

He is deeply protective of those he considers family or disciples. He trains Nawaki, Minato, Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan; rushes alone into the Hidden Mist Village to recover Nagato; and is especially sensitive to threats against his loved ones 8 74 246 557. He also has a mischievous, provocative streak, frequently teasing Sakumo, Tsunade, and Orochimaru 19 290 335.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Kawafune follows the Hatake Clan’s single-strike sword style, combining extreme speed with lethal precision.

  • Demonstrates the eight foundational sword movements—thrust, chop, slash, sweep, circle, point, snap, and block—while training Nawaki 8.
  • Uses techniques including Lightning Flash, Sword Art: Fire Lightning God, and Sword Art: Lightning God Speed 2 114 462.
  • Can use Flying Thunder God markers to turn thrown senbon and swords into teleportation points for surprise attacks 19 89 185.
  • His blades have been destroyed in clashes with Ōnoki and the Third Raikage 114 185.

Flying Thunder God Technique

Kawafune teleports to objects marked with the Flying Thunder God formula.

  • Learned from the Flying Thunder God Slash scroll provided by Tsunade 8 13.
  • Uses marked weapons to teleport behind opponents or evade large-scale attacks 19 89 185.
  • Created special senbon for the technique through Old Tie 14.
  • Can use a space-time barrier to transfer an explosion elsewhere 67.
  • The technique may be hindered if marked weapons are absorbed or the connection to their formulas is cut off 100.

Lightning Release

His Lightning Release supports both ranged attacks and his high-speed, close-quarters fighting style.

  • Palm Lightning — Fires lightning without hand seals to destroy incoming kunai 6.
  • Thunderclap Fist — Combines Lightning Release, Sage Chakra, and Super Strength to shatter the Third Kazekage’s Iron Sand Pyramid and injure powerful opponents 100 115.
  • Lightning Release: 100,000 Volts — Electrifies a body of water, incapacitating Hidden Mist shinobi caught within it 248.
  • Lightning Style: Crushing Fist — Meets a chakra cannon head-on to defend the Hokage Building 296.

Lightning Release Armor

Kawafune developed an armor-like Lightning Release technique that stimulates his cells.

  • Greatly enhances physical speed, offense, and defense 3.
  • Can vaporize Nawaki’s Water Dragon Bullet without visible movement 3.
  • Causes cellular strain due to the violent nature of Lightning chakra, though he can rapidly heal the damage 3 36.
  • Can be infused with Sage Chakra to increase cellular activity and break free from genjutsu-infused ninjutsu 250.

Sage Mode

Sage Mode significantly increases Kawafune’s speed, power, recovery, and Lightning Release output.

  • Produces red markings around his eyes 36.
  • Enhances his Lightning Release Armor and sword techniques 36 89.
  • Grants formidable healing, allowing severe combat injuries to recover rapidly 115 185.
  • Has a limited duration because his Sage Chakra consumption exceeds absorption during extended combat 100 115.

Wood Release

Kawafune’s Wood Release gives him massive battlefield control and the ability to suppress Tailed Beasts.

  • Deep Forest Emergence — Creates a forest that restrains enemies and drains their chakra 248.
  • Wood Golem Jutsu — Summons a massive Wood Golem, accompanied by a wooden dragon, to overpower Isobu 252.
  • Hobi Technique — A Sage Art Wood Release defense used against Madara’s Yasaka Magatama 463.
  • True Several Thousand Hands — Summons a colossal Guanyin statue described as surpassing even Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God in power 238.
  • His Wood Release can suppress Tailed Beast chakra, as demonstrated against Kokuō 532.

Sealing Techniques

Kawafune employs high-level sealing arts against powerful targets.

  • Sage Art: Myōjinmon — Summons massive red torii gates that can break the Third Kazekage’s Iron Sand World Order and counter Tailed Beast-related sealing techniques 100 104.
  • Uses sealing scrolls to store weapons, Tailed Beast materials, and spoils of war 464 532.

All-Killing Ash Bones

A Kekkei Mōra ability acquired through surgery.

  • Described as a power beyond Kekkei Genkai and Kekkei Tōta 572.
  • Those pierced by the bones disintegrate into dust, beginning at the wound 79 572.
  • Implanted successfully by Tsunade and Orochimaru 573.

  • Blaze Release Fan and Great Scythe — Taken from Madara’s cave as spoils of war 464.

Relationships

  • Hatake Sakumo — Older brother and frequent sparring partner. Their relationship mixes rivalry, teasing, and mutual trust; Kawafune works to keep Sakumo from isolating himself 2 7 19 246.
  • Tsunade — Wife and closest partner. Their initially flirtatious relationship develops into mutual loyalty, political partnership, and a family with an unborn son mentioned as Yuto 2 79 218 295.
  • Senju Nawaki — Brother-in-law and student. Kawafune trains him in swordsmanship, pushes him to mature, and treats threats to him as deeply personal 8 99 383.
  • Hatake Nayuki — Sister-in-law. They have a teasing family relationship; she often reprimands Kawafune and Sakumo for destructive behavior 7 218.
