Background

Nagato was born in the Land of Rain. His parents were killed by Konoha ninja, after which he wandered through wartime Amegakure with Yahiko and Konan, struggling to find food and survive. He retained the memory of the ninja responsible for his parents' deaths even after settling in Konoha. 69 275

Kawafune encountered the starving trio during the war, fed them, and chose to bring them back to Konoha as his disciples. Nagato initially broke down in tears while leaving the Land of Rain, but Konan reassured him that they now had a teacher. 69 70

In Konoha, Nagato became part of Kawafune's household and trained alongside Yahiko, Konan, Minato, and Nawaki. Kawafune recognized the danger of Nagato's Rinnegan and instructed him to conceal his eyes until he could protect himself. 72 73 190

Nagato joined Yahiko, Konan, Nonoyu, and Kakuzu in returning to the Land of Rain. He proposed recruiting Rain ninja as the foundation for their future state, and the group formally adopted the name Akatsuki. 348 351

During Akatsuki's war for the Land of Rain, Nagato served as both a combatant and medic. He treated Yahiko and the wounded while ensuring that rescued Rain ninja could retreat safely. 352 356 358
