Using Their Four Hooves to Trample Our Formation
Several strong soldiers immediately stepped forward, worked together to remove the heavy crossbeam in the center of the city gate, and then, shouting in unison, used all their strength to slowly pull the heavy wooden door open to both sides!
"Creak! Squeak!"
The heavy sound of the city gates opening was exceptionally jarring amidst the clamor of the battlefield.
The monsters, who were fiercely attacking the city walls and even trying to ram the city gates with their bodies, were clearly not expected that this sturdy barrier would suddenly open from the inside. For a moment, they were stunned, and their offensive paused briefly.
Just as the city gates opened wide enough for the cavalry to charge out!
"Beep!!!" Karl's whistle blared sharply!
"Bang!!!"
One hundred muskets spewed flames and smoke almost simultaneously!
The dense barrage of lead bullets, like a death storm, instantly cleared out a large portion of the monsters crammed at the city gate! Even with a few misfires, the more than eighty scorching bullets still caused considerable damage!
"Scatter! Scatter now!" Karl shouted hoarsely.
Without hesitation, the well-trained Musketeers immediately followed orders and retreated rapidly to both sides of the city gate, completely clearing the passage in the middle!
Almost the instant the Musketeers dispersed!
"Boom!!!"
The thunderous sound of hooves thundered from behind! Led by Lyon, the heavily armored cavalry had completed their short-distance acceleration and surged out of the city gate like a torrent of steel!
The men were clad in heavy armor, and the horses were fully armored, making them like a mobile fortress!
The cavalrymen completely ignored the mangled monster remains beneath their feet, riddled with bullets. Their horses trampled over the remains, and the cavalrymen, propelled by the speed of their horses, wildly swung, slashed, and thrust their scimitars, maces, and spears at the bewildered and chaotic monster hordes on either side!
In an instant, blades flashed, flesh and blood flew everywhere, and the screams of monsters rose and fell!
This fresh force's ferocious assault tore a huge gap in the monster horde, causing chaos and disarray among the monsters!
At the same time, Karl whistled again, this time with two short, sharp whistles!
The two militia platoons, which had been waiting in formation on both sides of the inner city gate, moved at the order! Without the slightest hesitation, the sixty soldiers advanced swiftly and orderly, instantly closing in and completely blocking the passage through the city gate that the cavalry had just rushed out!
"Swordsmen and Shieldbearers! Hold the line!" Platoon Leader Miller roared at the top of his lungs.
The Swordsmen and Shieldbearers at the front immediately crouched down, slamming their heavy wooden shields onto the ground, their shoulders and backs pressed firmly against the inside of the shields, instantly forming an impenetrable shield wall.
The spearmen in the rear swiftly thrust their spears out from the gaps above the shields or between the shields, creating a chilling jungle of death outside the city gate!
Almost the instant the shield wall closed, the monsters outside the city, who had been scattered by the cavalry and were recovering from their initial confusion, roared wildly, driven by their bloodlust, and surged towards the city gate, which seemed to be a "breakthrough," like a tidal wave!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The goblins and Kobold at the front slammed into the solid shields with a dull thud! The immense impact jolted the Swordsmen and Shieldbearers in the front ranks, but they gritted their teeth, braced their feet firmly against the ground, and withstood the shockwave!
"Chop!" roared the officer behind the Swordsmen and Shieldbearers.
The Swordsmen and Shieldbearers holding up the shields immediately swung their short-handled axes and short swords from above or to the sides of the shields, unleashing a frenzied baring of blows at the head and neck of the monster pressed against the shields, its claws outstretched! The dull thud of blades piercing flesh and the monster's screams filled the air.
Meanwhile, the spearmen in the back row showed no mercy!
They mechanically and efficiently repeated the stabbing motions, aiming at their target, thrusting their spears through the gaps with all their might, pulling back immediately upon feeling resistance, and then thrusting out again!
Each thrust precisely pierced the monster's relatively vulnerable chest, abdomen, or eye socket! When the spear was withdrawn, it often brought out a spray of filthy blood and bits of flesh.
The city gate opening instantly transformed into a bloody meat grinder.
The layers of monster corpses, piled up, actually hindered the onslaught of subsequent monsters to some extent.
But the militiamen remained under immense pressure, as the monster's claws and teeth constantly scraped and gnawed at their shields, attempting to break through their lines.
Sweat soaked their clothes, and their arms ached and went numb from the constant swinging and supporting, but no one took a step back!
They knew all too well that the city gates were right behind them, and if they fell, the consequences would be unimaginable!
This makeshift barrier, built with blood, flesh, and willpower, stood firmly at the city gate, buying crucial time for the cavalry to retreat and for the troops on the city walls to rotate.
Seeing the warriors at the city gate facing the monster's frenzied, reckless charge, Karl did not hesitate for a moment. He immediately put the whistle back into his mouth, took a deep breath, and blew out three short, sharp notes!
"Beep! Beep! Beep!"
This unique whistle, like a clear command, instantly pierced through the battlefield's clamor and reached the top of the city walls.
Brendan, who had been closely monitoring the battle below from above the city wall, immediately understood the meaning of the signal.
"Change positions! Quickly! First and third platoons, immediately go down from the city wall to rest! Second and fourth platoons, take over! Quickly! Move fast!" Brendan's booming voice echoed on the city wall.
The first batch of defenders, already exhausted, felt as if they had been granted a pardon. They immediately helped each other and quickly retreated down the steps inside the city wall.
Meanwhile, the reserve soldiers, who had been resting and recuperating for some time, quickly rushed up the city wall, took over the positions of their comrades, and reorganized a dense defensive line.
The fierce charge of the cavalry below the city attracted the attention of many monsters and caused great chaos, which suddenly relieved the pressure on the front of the city wall, allowing this crucial troop rotation to be completed smoothly and quickly.
Karl kept a close eye on the city wall and saw that the soldiers who had been relieved of their duties were basically in place. The fresh troops quickly took over from their tired comrades and re-secured the crenellated defenses.
He felt a little more at ease, knowing he had to immediately order the cavalry outside the city to retreat, otherwise Lyon and his men would be in danger if the monsters regrouped.
"Standard bearer! Signal the retreat! Bugler, blow the retreat horn!" Karl gave the order without hesitation.
On the city wall, flags signaling retreat were quickly waved, while the deep, urgent sound of bugles pierced through the clamor of the battlefield.
Below the city, the cavalrymen, who were fighting fiercely among the monsters, heard the bugle call and saw the flag signal.
Lyon smashed the head of a Kobold with his hammer and roared, "Retreat! Everyone retreat! Move towards the city gate!"
The cavalrymen immediately turned their horses around, covering each other as they tried to fight their way out and rejoin the city gate.
However, entering is easy, but exiting is difficult.
