Master Andrei Takes Action
Although the monsters were chaotic, their sheer number was overwhelming. They charged forward fearlessly, tearing at the horse's legs with their claws and blocking its path with their bodies.
The cavalrymen had to advance with great difficulty, constantly hacking and slashing, making their progress extremely slow.
Lyon watched with growing anxiety, but could only roar and urge the group forward.
With less than a hundred paces to the city gate, hope was within reach!
Suddenly, a cavalryman was dragged off his horse by several ghouls. The cavalryman screamed and fell to the ground. Before he could get up, he was overwhelmed by a tidal wave of monsters!
"No!" Lyon turned around and caught sight of this scene, his eyes wide with horror and his heart aching. It was an old soldier who had followed him for many years! But he knew that he could not stop now, or the entire army would be wiped out! He could only continue to lead his troops forward with red eyes.
At this critical moment!
A figure leaped down from the city wall like a meteorite! The heavy thud of the landing even drowned out the noise of the battlefield, sending several monsters flying!
It was none other than Master Andrei!
He wielded a seemingly ordinary longsword that subtly shimmered with light; his movements were as swift as lightning, the sword flashing in the air!
Wherever they went, monsters fell like harvested wheat, almost none of them could withstand a single blow!
Like a sharp knife, he tore a brief passage through the dense horde of monsters, quickly rushing to the vicinity of where the fallen cavalryman had been last submerged.
With a few flashes of sword light, the monsters surrounding them were cleared away, revealing the blood-soaked, still-struggling cavalrymen below.
Master Andrei yanked him up from the pile of monster corpses, tucked him under his arm, and with his other hand, he swung his longsword repeatedly, forcing back the surging monsters. Then, he rushed to the warhorse that had lost its master and was spinning in place, mounted it, placed the wounded cavalryman across the saddle, spurred the horse, and galloped toward the city gate!
All of this happened in the blink of an eye!
Seeing that Master Andrei had successfully rescued someone, Karl at the city gate felt a huge weight lifted from his shoulders and immediately shouted, "Scatter! Make way!"
Upon receiving the order, the militia platoon blocking the gate quickly dispersed to both sides.
Almost simultaneously, Lyon led the remaining cavalry to the gate and charged in without hesitation! Master Andrei followed closely behind, rushing in as well.
"Close the door!" Karl's voice was firm and decisive.
The militiamen immediately joined forces, shouting slogans, and slammed the heavy city gate shut again! The heavy crossbeams were also quickly pushed back into place!
Several monsters that tried to rush in were quickly dealt with by the Swordsmen and Shieldbearers and spearmen guarding the door.
The city gates and the outside world were once again separated.
Outside the city, the monster roared in despair and pounded against the city gates with muffled thuds; inside, the surviving cavalrymen breathed heavily and groaned in suppressed pain.
After a brief period of chaos, the monster army outside the city quickly realized that the sturdy city gates could not be easily breached, and their bloodthirsty instincts drove them to immediately shift their focus back to the city walls.
They roared even more wildly, surging towards the base of the wall like a tide, attempting to climb it.
However, the situation has changed.
During that precious brief respite when the cavalry attacked, drawing and distracting a large number of monsters, the defenders on the city walls were not idle.
Taking advantage of the situation, they used long poles and forks to push down or destroy the dozens of makeshift ladders that the monsters had painstakingly erected on the wall.
At this moment, although monsters are densely packed at the foot of the city wall, the crucial climbing tools are lacking!
The monsters could only futilely crowd around the wall, trying to pry the bricks with their claws or clumsily try to build human ladders, but these attempts were chaotic and inefficient under the defenders' dense barrage of bullets, arrows, rolling stones, and Fire oil.
The new defenders were a well-rested and energetic force, with excellent stamina and a tight defense. They calmly poured fire down from behind the battlements, repeatedly thwarting the monsters' attempts to rebuild the ladders.
The siege battle has once again devolved into a war of attrition, favoring the defenders, with defensive siege equipment and ranged firepower constantly wearing down the monsters' forces.
Hermod stood in front of the command tent in the distance, holding a telescope and watching all this with a grim expression.
The battle had been going on all morning, and his army of magical creatures, on which he had placed high hopes, had not only exhausted the defenders' ammunition and supplies, but had also failed to capture even a section of the city wall!
The monsters' corpses had piled up in a thick layer at the foot of the wall, yet hardly any Broomflower soldiers' bodies fell from the city walls.
"These brainless idiots!" he muttered under his breath.
Although he had expected it, the inefficiency and stupidity of these magical creations still exceeded his imagination.
They had no tactics whatsoever; all they knew was to recklessly throw their lives away.
Furthermore, the Sorcerer Thor warned that these monsters, driven by evil magic, could not distinguish friend from foe, and that his Sauron soldier would be unable to get close enough to provide ranged support, or they would likely be torn apart by these "allies" first.
However, Hermod could only console himself with the thought that these monsters seemed endless.
Through his binoculars, he observed carefully and could indeed see that although the defenders on the city wall were still putting up a stubborn resistance, their movements were noticeably slower than at the beginning, and the frequency of dumping logs and stones was also decreasing. Clearly, the continuous high-intensity battle was taking a huge toll on their physical strength and the supplies needed to defend the city.
He firmly believed that as long as he continued this relentless attack regardless of the cost, the enemy's defenses would eventually break through, or even be breached in one fell swoop! The scales of victory seemed to be tilting in his favor little by little.
