Background / History
Byron was abandoned at the gates of the Dawn Church and grew up among the Church's orphans. His life was subsequently shaped by war, repeated encounters with loss of control, and the deaths of fellow clergy. He eventually rose from mortality into the Demigod realm. 466
As Bishop of Francis, Byron served as the diocese's highest-ranking clergyman: an apostle of Dawn, instructor of doctrine, sacramental officiant, shepherd, and the official with authority to promote transcendent individuals. He was responsible for the diocese's security, including its Ascetics and supernatural investigations. 11 22
He received Ning Xiuyuan—then known as Arthur—after the latter's arrival in Francis. Byron provided Arthur with the Disease Deceiver characteristic, explained its belief-dependent limitation, advised him to pose as an Ascetic Physician, and armed him with a revolver containing normal and extraordinary bullets. 9
During the Orlando loss-of-control trial, Byron independently used a Spirit Summoning Ritual to reconstruct the incident from the fragmented consciousness of the dead. He publicly confirmed that a wandering soul had emerged from the rusted sword, rebutting Father Rhodes's speculation while withholding Arthur's Church secrets. 20
Byron was later assigned as the Church of Dawn's messenger to the Northern Continent. Though initially reluctant to enter territory tied to Old Ones, he accepted after the Pope offered him the bishopric of Sebastien. He led the Dawn delegation's first formal contact with the True Church and gathered intelligence on the Vormi, the Man of Truth, and Yavm-Zah. 229 245 246
After Arthur's return, Byron transferred the Francis bishopric to him and publicly named Arthur the twenty-seventh Bishop of Francis. Byron subsequently became a Demigod Patriarch and was reassigned to Sebastien. 256 257 258
Following the fall of the God of Mechanical Undead, Byron was stationed in Ansair, part of the former god's divided territory. He survived the events in Zul-Bha-Sothal and later received command of the Dawn Church's forces in Zosik, a mission he suspected was also a test of his loyalty. 389 392 462
Appearance
Byron was described as a man around forty with thinning hair. In his early appearance as Bishop of Francis, he wore red clerical robes and carried the sacred canon; he was also noted for a gentle, jade-like bearing. 7 17
- Red clerical robes during his service in Francis. 7 17
- Carries the sacred canon, a divine artifact accessible to bishops and higher clergy. 7 86
- Later wields a Great Angel Silver Pastoral Staff as a Patriarch. 390
Personality
Byron initially presents himself as a compassionate and meticulous shepherd. He personally guides newly promoted transcendents, grieves for fallen subordinates despite his familiarity with death, and rejects malicious speculation against members of his flock. 11 17 20
He is also observant, disciplined, and politically cautious. He verifies seals before reading papal correspondence, investigates Arthur rather than accepting accusations at face value, and conducts diplomacy with restraint despite entering unfamiliar and dangerous territory. 22 86 245 246
His compassion is complicated by ambition and envy. Byron coveted a high-level characteristic, struggled with Arthur's extraordinary rise, and had to use prayer to suppress emotions that threatened loss of control. 91 249
After becoming a Demigod, Byron's faith increasingly gave way to pragmatism. Witnessing the Church's wars and the expendability of orphans like himself led him to question what he was fighting for; in battle, survival became his overriding priority. 466
