Background and History

Obito was a student of Minato Namikaze and a former friend of Kakashi Hatake. He became the Masked Man after Rin Nohara's death; Kakashi later attributes Obito's attack on Konoha and the Nine-Tails' Rampage to that loss 146 241 248. Obito resents Konoha and seeks a world where Rin exists 36.

He cultivated Itachi Uchiha as an asset, killing Itachi's teammate during a mission and helping him awaken the Double Tomoe Sharingan. When Itachi later noticed him near Konoha, Obito vanished without speaking to him 36. Obito subsequently tried to draw Itachi into his plans for Akatsuki 46 73.

During the Uchiha clan's attempted departure from Konoha, Obito attacked Shisui outside the Security Building. He withdrew after recognizing Shisui and judging that a fight against his Mangekyō Sharingan was not worth the risk of exposing his abilities 68 69. Itachi later met him at Naka Shrine and agreed to join Akatsuki, intending to gather intelligence on the organization for Konoha 73.

Obito also controlled the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura, disrupting Kirigakure's development and prolonging its internal strife 97 112. After Yagura was freed, Obito continued to pursue the collection of the Tailed Beasts while his relationship with Akatsuki's leader, Nagato, deteriorated 106 218. Naruto eventually killed Obito; when the reanimated Hokage later questioned who was controlling them, Naruto identified Madara Uchiha instead 309.
