Background / History

Shirou was an ordinary student with some aptitude for magecraft, but his practical knowledge was limited to basic reinforcement. He was killed by Cú Chulainn after witnessing a battle at school, then revived by Lu Minghao, who replaced nearly all of his internal organs in the Shadow World. Shirou retained the memory of his death as a nightmare and gradually noticed that his body no longer behaved normally. 288 289

When Cú Chulainn returned to kill him again, Shirou's instinct to survive awakened. His mana erupted, and he summoned Artoria Pendragon as Saber. The abnormal organs inside him became the foundation of Lu Minghao's plan to reshape him into “Giant Hero Emiya” by feeding on Shirou's fear, anger, attachment, and eventual loss. 289 290

Shirou initially inherited Emiya Kiritsugu's dream of becoming a Hero of Justice. After witnessing the damage caused by the Holy Grail War, he wished to protect others and sought to end the conflict. His attachment to Matou Sakura became increasingly central to his choices, eventually superseding his former ideal. 291 296 299

Appearance

Shirou is a young man with brown eyes whose appearance becomes progressively more unnatural as Caster's alterations and blackening take effect. 289 304

  • His pupils turn pitch black after his descent into blackening. 305 306
  • His arm and back can liquefy into jelly-like matter and form weapon-wielding tentacles. 304
  • His body can regenerate catastrophic damage after he projects the Twelve Trials. 306

Personality

Before his transformation, Shirou is compassionate, stubborn, and driven by a desire to save people. He rushes to Sakura's side after the Matou residence is destroyed and worries about civilians caught in the Holy Grail War. 296 298

His near-death experiences and altered body expose a violent survival instinct. Under fear or anger, he becomes intensely aggressive and emits killing intent that even unsettles Saber. 289 290

After learning Archer's future and losing Sakura, Shirou rejects the dream of becoming a Hero of Justice. He becomes ruthless in pursuing the Holy Grail, willing to kill Shinji, fight Illya without mercy, and sacrifice others for the chance to restore what he has lost. 302 305 307

Abilities & Skills

Projection Magecraft

Shirou can materialize weapons and defensive constructs from magical energy. His capability develops rapidly after absorbing Archer's memories and experience. 290 302 304

  • Projects staves, short swords, longbows, arrows, chains, and Noble Phantasms. 290 304 306
  • Materializes the Seven Heavens Shield, which blocks several layers of Archer's attack before collapsing. 302
  • Can reproduce weapons associated with Gilgamesh, including the Chains of Heaven and Ea. 306 307

Altered Physiology

Caster-created organs transform Shirou's heart into a source of exceptional magical energy, especially in moments of danger, rage, or despair. 288 298

  • Possesses rapidly growing physical strength and can contend with Saber for several minutes under normal conditions. 298
  • Gains enormous mana output capable of strengthening Saber beyond her ordinary limits. 289 302
  • Can liquefy parts of his body into tentacles that wield projected weapons. 304

Archer's Memories and Experience

During his confrontation with Archer, Shirou receives and assimilates memories of his future self. 302 304

  • Understands Archer's fighting style and can analyze his attacks almost immediately. 304
  • Learns the fate of the future Hero of Justice and consciously rejects that path. 302
  • Gains access to Archer's Reality Marble and projected armaments. 304 307

Unlimited Blade Works

Shirou deploys a Reality Marble that replaces the battlefield with a desert filled with swords beneath enormous gears. 307

  • Allows him to produce and direct large numbers of projected swords against Heracles. 307
  • Requires substantial mana, which Shirou can supply through his altered body. 302 307

Projected Twelve Trials

By analyzing Heracles' Noble Phantasm, Shirou recreates a diminished but repeatable version of the Twelve Trials. 306

  • Each projection grants one extra life rather than Heracles' full set of lives. 306
  • Does not provide resistance or immunity to attacks that have already killed him. 306
  • Can be projected repeatedly as long as Shirou has sufficient mana. 306

Relationships

  • Artoria Pendragon (Saber) — Shirou summons Saber while resisting Cú Chulainn. She protects him throughout the war, while he later supplies her with immense mana. 289 302
  • Matou Sakura — Shirou's loved one and the person he resolves to marry after the war. Her corruption, death, and later union with his shadow drive his blackening. 299 304 305
  • Lu Minghao (Caster) — Caster revives and secretly alters Shirou to create “Giant Hero Emiya.” Shirou later becomes Caster's Master in exchange for the promise of a Holy Grail wish. 288 290 305
  • Tohsaka Rin — Rin attempts to save Shirou after finding his corpse and later seeks an alliance with him; Shirou rejects the proposal. 288 290
  • Archer — Shirou's future self and eventual opponent. Shirou absorbs Archer's memories and abilities, defeats him, and chooses not to repeat Archer's path. 302 304
  • Illya — Shirou's nominal sister and Berserker's Master. Archer's memories reveal her connection to him, but Shirou still fights her to reach the Holy Grail. 306 307
  • Emiya Kiritsugu — Shirou's adoptive father, whose dream of becoming a Hero of Justice initially shapes Shirou's ideals. 291 298
