Background / History

Irisviel was created as the Einzbern family's ultimate homunculus and completed ten years ahead of schedule. Her performance represented the culmination of two millennia of Einzbern technology, and the family intended to stake its long pursuit of the Holy Grail on her success. Her body was designed as a Lesser Holy Grail: a vessel that would absorb defeated Servants' souls and ultimately cease functioning once its purpose was fulfilled. 22 35 100

During the Fourth Holy Grail War, Irisviel summoned Artoria Pendragon as Saber using Avalon's sheath as a catalyst. Defying the Einzbern family's preference to retain the scabbard, she entrusted it to Saber because she believed her Servant deserved her complete trust. Though she concealed the family's intention to sacrifice Saber at the ritual's end, she sincerely wished for their Master–Servant partnership to be built on faith. 22

Irisviel initially treated the war as an exciting trip with Saber rather than a grim contest for the Grail. Her private dream was not the Einzbern's Third Magic, but to become a mother and raise a child. 23 33

She first met Shirou while he was using the name “Shinji.” Moved by his claim that he had no parents, she instinctively offered to take him in. Though Shirou had initially approached her to gather intelligence, his repeated rescues and their growing trust led Irisviel to seek an alliance with him. 34 58 59

As the war progressed, Irisviel became increasingly attached to Shirou and began to reject the death expected of her as a Grail vessel. She and Saber supported his efforts to end the corrupted Grail ritual rather than pursue the Einzbern family's objective. 88 100 108

Kirei Kotomine defeated and killed Irisviel while she and Hundred-Faced Hassan entered the Great Cavern, but she later regained consciousness and struck back at him. Her Lesser Grail function remained intact despite her physical death. 117 119

After the war, Irisviel remained in Japan with Shirou, Sella, and Ritseliete. When her artificially limited lifespan began to fail, she accepted that she feared death and agreed to seek a future beyond the role for which she had been made. 147 223 224

Irisviel returned to the Einzbern homeland with Shirou and confronted Ahadon, demanding that homunculi be allowed dreams beyond the clan's pursuit of the Third Magic. After Ahadon refused to help extend her life, she led a rebellion, offered the clan a choice between the old goal and her leadership, and was elected the Ninth Head of the Einzbern Family. 228 230

As head, she abandoned the construction of a new Grail and redirected the Einzbern's purpose toward giving artificial lifeforms complete lives comparable to humans. Despite her worsening health, she personally managed the family's transition and began assigning homunculi according to their interests rather than their designed functions. 230 234

A natural pregnancy was identified as a means for Irisviel to continue living as a human. She and Shirou eventually accepted their changing relationship, and Irisviel became pregnant with their daughter, Illyasviel. Illya was born healthy with red eyes. 225 233 237 267

Later, while Shirou was absent, Irisviel joined Rin, Sakura, and Illya in creating a new Greater Grail in the hope of bringing him back. The ritual rebirthed Justiça Lieselotte von Einzbern, the Winter Saintess, and left Irisviel burdened by the secrecy of their decision. 389 400

Irisviel is a silver-haired, crimson-eyed homunculus with an aristocratic presence that blends the innocence of a sheltered princess with the elegance of a noblewoman. 22

Irisviel is affectionate, curious, and unusually carefree for someone created to serve as a Holy Grail vessel. She enjoys modern outings, fashion, shopping, and spending time with Saber, often treating the Holy Grail War as an opportunity to experience the outside world. Her lack of ordinary common sense can make her conspicuous or impulsive, but it also reflects how little of a normal life she was allowed to have. 33 34

She is deeply trusting of those she accepts as family. Her decision to give Avalon to Saber and her willingness to use Command Spells in support of Saber's judgment demonstrate her belief that a Master and Servant should rely on one another rather than scheme against each other. 22 57

Although initially naïve about war and insecure about her value beyond supplying mana, Irisviel grows increasingly resolute. She chooses to oppose the corrupted Grail, admits that she wants to live, confronts the Einzbern leadership, and redefines the future of her family around individual choice. 60 108 228 230
