Background

Aoko grew up as the younger sister of Touko Aozaki, the original heir to the Aozaki family’s inherited True Magic. While Touko was raised in a mountain workshop to become the successor, Aoko lived an ordinary childhood with her parents and expected to pursue a normal future. The inheritance was abruptly transferred to Aoko, who received no magical education until she was chosen as heir and sent to train under Arisu Kyōnoji. 151 178

Her first use of the Fifth Magic determined the sisters’ future. By accelerating herself ten years forward, Aoko temporarily obtained the skills of her future self and defeated Touko in their lethal succession conflict. Though she initially believed the killing was justified, the seventeen-year-old Aoko was left to bear the emotional weight of having killed her sister and eventually abandoned school for an aimless journey. 152 154
