Background / History
Arisu was born into the Kyōnoji family through a union between its eldest son and a British witch. Her mother was a Meinst, a highest-ranking great witch capable of Fairy Tale Magic; this heritage gave Arisu the potential to become a Witch. Her parents lived in the Western-style mansion in Misaki City. 151
She lived with Aoko Aozaki for three years and became her close but frequently combative friend. Eight years after Aoko killed her sister Touko, Arisu remained largely unchanged in appearance and disposition, having withdrawn into the mansion after finishing high school. 154 155
Shirou Amamiya first visited the mansion while investigating Touko Aozaki. Though initially suspicious, Arisu admitted him after sensing his unusual sincerity. His work restoring the overgrown garden and his knowledge of black tea gradually made her comfortable with his presence. 149 150
She eventually allowed Shirou to visit freely and confided the history of her family and the Aozaki sisters to him. 151 When Shirou sought Aoko's aid for time travel, Arisu objected to the risks but later agreed to support the plan. 152 155
Before Shirou's leap to 1989, Arisu used her Mage's Eye to impose a self-suggestion: from that point onward, she would obey any command from Shirou. She intended the command to bind her across time and ensure that Shirou would protect her younger self. 159
Appearance
Arisu is a black-haired, black-eyed woman whose appearance and aura remain close to those of her seventeen-year-old self despite being twenty-five. She generally presents herself with composed, ascetic elegance and favors dark clothing. 150 154
- Long black hair and glass-like dark eyes. 162
- Usually wears signature black knitwear. 158
- Has a petite, delicate build and notably poor athletic ability. 157 162
- Her appearance and demeanor change markedly when her alter ego takes control within the Fae Domain. 188
Personality
Arisu is guarded, territorial, and deeply attached to the Kyōnoji mansion. She is initially cold toward Shirou and distrustful of his unexplained arrival, but his steady care for the house and its residents slowly earns her affection. 150 168 174
Beneath her reserved manner, Arisu is possessive, jealous, and highly sensitive to being excluded—particularly where Shirou and Aoko are concerned. She envies Aoko's ease around Shirou and can react sharply when she feels that Shirou's kindness is motivated solely by Aoko's wishes. 156 168 174
She is also stubborn and principled. Arisu opposes time travel because she fears its consequences, and she is willing to deceive or restrain Shirou and Aoko rather than accept a plan she considers reckless. 155 156
Her deepest desire is not ownership of Shirou, but a place where she can be accepted despite being a Witch. This desire becomes central when her suppressed alter ego manifests within the Fae Domain. 189 190
Abilities & Skills
Fairy Tale Magic
Arisu inherited Fairy Tale Magic through her Meinst lineage. This witchcraft summarizes stories into magic and produces phenomena that do not follow ordinary physical laws. 151 156
- Creates and commands Fairy Tale Monsters, also called Ploys. 156
- Uses Mother Goose chants and ritual gestures to activate her magic. 161 164
- Can turn an area into her domain, as demonstrated when the forest became “her world” during her battle with the Slit-Mouthed Men. 161
- Her magic is especially potent at night. 182
Fairy Tale Monsters
Arisu possesses multiple Ploys based on fairy tales, including several exceptional entities. 156 157
- Wandersnatch — One of her three great Fairy Tale Monsters. It can trap targets and, when it runs out of control, distort spacetime on a mountain-wide scale to create a Fae Domain. 156 182
- Giant of the Bridge / Thames Troll — A primordial golem modeled after London Bridge. Its true form is described as city-sized and possessing more than two thousand years of mystery; Arisu summoned a limited manifestation against the Slit-Mouthed Men. 157 161
- Mirror of Naps — A mist-form Great Barrier containing an inner world. It can search Misaki City and guard or monitor the mansion through a mirror in Arisu's room. 158
- Flat Snark — One of the Great Three. It generates a powerful barrier, supplies magic continuously, and recreates forgotten or abandoned things as Ploys. 191
- Chatty Twins — High-level Ploys that transform according to dice results; Arisu has only seen them take the form of piggies, which bite and restrain targets. 161
Mage's Eye and Suggestion
Arisu possesses a Mage's Eye with sufficient mystery to alter the nature of her suggestions. 159
- By activating its acrostic, she can turn a suggestion into a compulsory command. 159
- She used it on her own reflection in Shirou's eyes, creating a command for herself to obey Shirou regardless of changes to the timeline. 159
First True Magic
After using Flat Snark in an attempt to revive Shirou, Arisu became the First True Magic User. 191
- Her ascension followed an act of resurrection involving Flat Snark's miracle. 191
- The event dispersed a sea of white flowers across the snow-covered Fae Domain. 191
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Glass cat charm — A black glass cat pendant used as part of a ritual against the Slit-Mouthed Men. 161
- Mirror of Naps core — A mirror kept in Arisu's room that serves as the core of the Mirror of Naps barrier. 158
- Flat Snark bottle — A small bottle of green liquid containing the Fairy Tale Monster Flat Snark. 190 191
Relationships
- Shirou Amamiya — Initially a suspicious visitor, then a trusted resident of her mansion, Familiar, and lover. Arisu’s attachment to him drives both her jealousy and her determination to resurrect him after killing him in the Fae Domain. 150 170 190 192
- Aoko Aozaki — Former housemate and close friend-rival. Their conflicting personalities and arguments over Shirou and time travel repeatedly strain their bond, though they continue supporting each other in battle. 152 155 161
- Touko Aozaki — Aoko’s older sister and former heir to the Aozaki family’s magic. Arisu explains Touko’s history to Shirou and later opposes her assault on Misaki City. 151 173
- Arisu’s alter ego — Her suppressed “evil personality,” given physical form by the out-of-control Wandersnatch. The alter ego resents Arisu’s efforts to live by modern human rules and seeks to force her into committing an unforgivable sin. 188
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Shirou
Shirou arrives at the Kyōnoji residence seeking information about Touko Aozaki. Arisu reluctantly lets him inside, then becomes increasingly receptive after he restores her neglected garden, shares tea with her, and respects her boundaries. 149 150
Over the following week, she allows Shirou free access to the mansion and tells him about her lineage, her mother’s Fairy Tale Magic, and the Aozaki succession dispute. 151
Time-Travel Preparations
Arisu initially resists Aoko's proposal to send Shirou back to 1989, viewing time travel as irresponsible and dangerous. She ultimately agrees to help, but secretly prepares a self-suggestion that makes her obey Shirou across time. 155 159
The 1989 Misaki Conflict
In the past timeline, Arisu and Aoko investigate attacks by Slit-Mouthed Men and Touko's dolls. Arisu deploys Fairy Tale Monsters to fight the invaders and initially regards the mysterious Shirou as a dangerous enemy despite his rescue of Aoko. 161 162
After Shirou reveals that he came from the future to correct a Singularity, Arisu permits him to remain at the mansion under conditions. Her distrust gradually softens as he cooks, repairs the house, and helps defend Misaki. 165 167 174
Fae Domain Incident
Arisu’s Wandersnatch loses control after Touko attacks the mansion, creating a mountain-wide Fae Domain trapped in a spacetime loop. Her suppressed alter ego manifests as the domain’s master and seeks to exploit Arisu’s magic and guilt. 180 188
Shirou confronts the alter ego and refuses to abandon Arisu even after suffering a lethal attack. Arisu's possessiveness and misunderstanding lead her to kill Shirou herself, after which she uses Flat Snark to resurrect him and becomes the First True Magic User. 189 190 191
