Background

Atabia originated among the Atabians, a civilization forced by its ultraviolet-lit, alcoholic ocean environment to evolve from single cells into visible multicellular merfolk. As their Emperor, Atabia faced the biological limit of their growth: larger, more complex bodies became difficult to maintain and short-lived. The Atabians responded by building the Tower of Babel to challenge the gods beyond their world 13.

In the ancient era, Atabia was an extraordinary scientific genius but an indifferent ruler. Herodotus later judged that Atabia cared more for truth, research, and the heavens beyond the Crystal Wall than for the lives of the Atabian people. Herodotus nevertheless remained indispensable as Atabia's imperial general and political counterweight 35.

Atabia's view of rulership changed during the struggle to access resources beyond the civilization's reach. While attempting to open a can of beef, Atabia repeatedly altered body and consciousness, eventually rejecting a path that would sacrifice the populace for personal goals. The successful opening supplied vital nutrients to the civilization 22.

After dying in the ancient era, Atabia remained dormant for tens of thousands of years. Minis later arranged an attempted revival using Ji Cao, a True God transformed into Immortal Medicine. Atabia is intensely intelligent, proud, and easily bored by people unable to match the pace of thought. Atabia prefers solitary research to directing a civilization, comparing collaboration with lesser minds to having strangers interrupt a private hobby.
