Background

Xiao Xiao was a high-school student who knew Yang Jia as the admired transfer student in his class. During high school, he suffered severe headaches and was taken by his parents to a secret Black Forest facility, where he was unknowingly enrolled in the Pioneer Project. He later spent four years largely isolated at home and was diagnosed with severe mental illness. 10 197 198 228

His awakening began when he perceived his mother and Black Gate City as monstrous beneath their ordinary appearances. Yang Jia intervened, introduced him to the Outsider world, and became his earliest guide. An investigation later found no sign that he had been influenced by the city’s Mysterious Source, classifying him as a “clean individual.” 4 5 9

Despite believing that much of his domestic life may be fabricated, Xiao Xiao remains deeply attached to his mother and repeatedly chooses to care for her.
