Background / History
Liu Yanran attended university with He Jingtian, whom she loved before marrying Su Zhenxing. Her elder brother, Liu Xingran, forced the couple apart because He Jingtian could not benefit the Liu family; Liu Yanran then entered a marriage alliance with Su Zhenxing. As Su Corporation prospered, she gradually began to care for Su Zhenxing, though their relationship never became wholly affectionate 405 547.
After Su Chen was lost as a young child, Liu Yanran was blamed by Old Madam Su and pressured by her own family. These experiences became a lasting source of resentment, which she later directed at Su Chen after his return 555. She favored her adopted son Su Mu over Su Chen and encouraged her younger brother Liu Zhaoran to bully Su Chen, privately regretting that Liu Zhaoran had not hurt him more severely 47.
Conflict with Su Chen
Liu Yanran attempted to have Su Chen taken to a mental hospital by hiring Doctor Liu and four male nurses. Su Chen and Doctor Liu turned the arrangement against her, resulting in Liu Yanran’s forced commitment instead 100 101.
During her first confinement, she endured repeated treatments and visibly aged. When her rage toward Su Chen caused an outburst during electromagnetic therapy, the treatment was extended by ten minutes 107 108. She then stopped openly resisting and cooperated with staff, intending to earn their trust, leave the hospital, and regain leverage over Su Chen 109.
Financial Loss and Family Decline
Liu Yanran invested thirty million yuan with a wealth-management company that disappeared with her principal. The loss shattered her composure and led Su Zhenxing to question her judgment and revoke her management rights over Su family fixed assets 138 139 141.
Her marriage further deteriorated after Su Zhenxing learned of her past connection to He Jingtian and other concealed family matters. She sought a divorce and half of the Su family property through Liu Xingran, but Su Zhenxing discovered their messages and confronted her 400 410.
He Mu’s Parentage
Liu Yanran was intensely devoted to Su Mu, later known as He Mu, and repeatedly defended him against Su Chen. He Mu exploited this loyalty, using her as an inside influence against the Su family 238 278 286.
During a prison confrontation, He Jingtian revealed that He Mu was not merely Liu Yanran’s adopted son, but her biological son with him 483. After He Mu’s death, Liu Yanran mourned that she had learned the truth too late and blamed Su Chen for his fate 488.
Second Confinement and Lobotomy
Su Zhenxing eventually confined Liu Yanran to her bedroom after learning of her schemes involving Su Qiqi. Following an apparent breakdown—later admitted by Liu Yanran to have been an act to avoid being beaten—Doctor Liu returned and had her recommitted to the mental hospital 374 410 412 417.
While institutionalized, Liu Yanran planned to kill Su Chen and escape. She tried to manipulate a security guard for access to an electric baton, secretly hoarded drowsiness-inducing medication, and later attempted to give Su Chen a drugged drink 524 526 528 535.
After her attempts failed, Liu Yanran feigned madness and tried to escape to avoid surgery. She was caught, and Doctor Liu performed a lobotomy 553 554 556. Upon awakening, she no longer recognized her family and called herself “YanYan,” pleading for her parents and brother like a frightened child 556.
Appearance
Liu Yanran was originally known for the polished image of a wealthy noblewoman: elegant clothes, careful makeup, and a dignified, controlled smile. She considered beauty and presentation central to a woman’s social power 107 411.
- Before her hospitalizations, she maintained a youthful, refined appearance and was often described as radiant and beautiful 107 238.
- Early electromagnetic treatments left her pale, wrinkled, and visibly aged; without makeup, Su Chen thought she looked decades older 107 110.
- After later confinement and hospitalization, she was frequently depicted with disheveled hair, a haggard face, and damaged clothing 411 482 554.
- Following her lobotomy, her head was wrapped in white gauze and her expressions became delayed and childlike 556.
Personality
Liu Yanran is highly status-conscious and protective of the image of being the Haishi richest man’s wife. She fears ridicule from people who once flattered her and is willing to make major concessions to preserve her position and reputation 201 335.
She is controlling and openly biased in her maternal affection. She resented Su Chen, favored Su Mu/He Mu, and repeatedly interpreted He Mu’s actions in the most charitable light even when he used her for his own schemes 47 238 278. Her treatment of Fang Qingqing similarly shows her desire to dominate younger women within the household 297.
Though frequently impulsive when angry, Liu Yanran can become calculating under pressure. She recognized that open defiance would keep her institutionalized, so she learned to conceal her hostility and perform obedience when it served her interests 109 526. Her later attempts to feign insanity, manipulate guards, and poison Su Chen show that self-preservation and revenge outweighed genuine remorse 524 535 553.
Skills & Tactics
Social Image Management
Liu Yanran cultivated the appearance of a graceful upper-class wife and used status, politeness, and maternal authority to influence others.
- Maintained a carefully polished public image even while privately facing marital abuse and family conflict 335 411.
- Used her standing as Su Zhenxing’s wife to intimidate hospital staff and demand special treatment 109 430.
- Her reliance on reputation became a weakness when exposure and humiliation threatened her social position 201 335.
Manipulation and Deception
Liu Yanran repeatedly changes her behavior to secure an advantage.
- Cooperated with nurses after electromagnetic therapy to appear improved and facilitate her discharge 109.
- Pretended to have a breakdown to evade Su Zhenxing, then admitted that the display had been an act 410 412.
- Feigned madness to avoid a lobotomy, but Su Chen recognized the deception 553.
- Used flirtation and apparent obedience to lower a security guard’s vigilance while seeking access to his electric baton 526.
Endurance
Liu Yanran can suppress outward reactions when doing so supports a larger plan.
- Endured electromagnetic therapy silently after deciding that resistance would harm her chance of release 109.
- Continued cooperating with treatment despite planning an escape and revenge against Su Chen 526 528.
- Her endurance did not overcome the hospital’s security or Su Chen’s suspicion; her escape attempt was stopped within minutes 553 554.
