Background / History

Liu Yanran attended university with He Jingtian, whom she loved before marrying Su Zhenxing. Her elder brother, Liu Xingran, forced the couple apart because He Jingtian could not benefit the Liu family; Liu Yanran then entered a marriage alliance with Su Zhenxing. As Su Corporation prospered, she gradually began to care for Su Zhenxing, though their relationship never became wholly affectionate 405 547.

After Su Chen was lost as a young child, Liu Yanran was blamed by Old Madam Su and pressured by her own family. These experiences became a lasting source of resentment, which she later directed at Su Chen after his return 555. She favored her adopted son Su Mu over Su Chen and encouraged her younger brother Liu Zhaoran to bully Su Chen, privately regretting that Liu Zhaoran had not hurt him more severely 47.

Conflict with Su Chen

During her first confinement, she endured repeated treatments and visibly aged. When her rage toward Su Chen caused an outburst during electromagnetic therapy, the treatment was extended by ten minutes 107 108. She then stopped openly resisting and cooperated with staff, intending to earn their trust, leave the hospital, and regain leverage over Su Chen 109.

Financial Loss and Family Decline

He Mu’s Parentage

Liu Yanran was intensely devoted to Su Mu, later known as He Mu, and repeatedly defended him against Su Chen. He Mu exploited this loyalty, using her as an inside influence against the Su family 238 278 286.

During a prison confrontation, He Jingtian revealed that He Mu was not merely Liu Yanran’s adopted son, but her biological son with him 483. After He Mu’s death, Liu Yanran mourned that she had learned the truth too late and blamed Su Chen for his fate 488.

Second Confinement and Lobotomy

Su Zhenxing eventually confined Liu Yanran to her bedroom after learning of her schemes involving Su Qiqi. Following an apparent breakdown—later admitted by Liu Yanran to have been an act to avoid being beaten—Doctor Liu returned and had her recommitted to the mental hospital 374 410 412 417.

While institutionalized, Liu Yanran planned to kill Su Chen and escape. She tried to manipulate a security guard for access to an electric baton, secretly hoarded drowsiness-inducing medication, and later attempted to give Su Chen a drugged drink 524 526 528 535.

After her attempts failed, Liu Yanran feigned madness and tried to escape to avoid surgery. She was caught, and Doctor Liu performed a lobotomy 553 554 556. Upon awakening, she no longer recognized her family and called herself “YanYan,” pleading for her parents and brother like a frightened child 556.

Though frequently impulsive when angry, Liu Yanran can become calculating under pressure.
