Background / History

Yu Lin commanded the Crimson Scale Army during Yan State's three-month siege of Fengtian County City. Although his original order was to hold the city for one month, he refused to withdraw; Great Qin's planned strategy had been to relinquish Fengtian County in exchange for five counties in Northern Yan. His defiance prolonged the defense but cost the lives of many soldiers and civilians, a responsibility he acknowledged before his death 16.

During the siege's food shortage, Yu Lin slaughtered his treasured warhorse to feed the soldiers. He summoned Zhang Yuan after learning that the young guard had proposed adding unused medicinal herbs to meat soup for the wounded. Impressed by Zhang's concern for his comrades, Yu Lin offered him a reward 8.

When Zhang Yuan requested a cultivation method, Yu Lin evaluated his Cape Saber Technique and recognized exceptional talent in the youth. He began passing down the Mountain Yue Saber Technique and later the Mountain Yue Fist Technique, intending to preserve his martial legacy through Zhang Yuan 9 10 11.

Personality

Yu Lin was resolute, patriotic, and deeply attached to Great Qin's ideal that no territory should be abandoned. This conviction drove him to hold Fengtian County beyond his orders, even when the military cost became catastrophic 9 16.

He was also capable of compassion and self-reflection. He worried that Zhang Yuan was too young to be fighting in the besieged city, valued the boy's kindness toward wounded comrades, and sought to give him the means to survive and inherit his martial arts 8 10 11. Before dying, Yu Lin openly admitted that his stubbornness had harmed Fengtian's people and soldiers 16.

Yu Lin served as the highest-ranking officer encountered by Zhang Yuan in Fengtian. He supported the wounded soldiers' food supply after hearing Zhang's medicinal-herb proposal and rewarded the young guard with martial instruction 8 9.

Passing Down the Mountain Yue Legacy

After witnessing Zhang Yuan's talent, Yu Lin repeatedly demonstrated the Mountain Yue Saber Technique and began teaching its fist counterpart. He came to view Zhang as the successor who could preserve his inheritance 9 10 11.

Final Battle and Death

Yu Lin confronted two Yan Xiantian experts and Ouyang Ming to prevent them from pursuing Fengtian's evacuating civilians and wounded. He severely injured his opponents, used a life-burning secret art against the demon-transformed enemy, and enabled Zhang Yuan to finish the battle 14 15 16.

Mortally wounded, Yu Lin confessed that he had disobeyed the planned withdrawal from Fengtian and asked Zhang Yuan to tell Zhao Changming to leave. Zhang instead promised to defend the city in Yu Lin's place, then used Yu Lin's armor to deter the Yan Army and sustain the defenders' morale 16 17.

Legacy

Yu Lin's death was concealed briefly so Fengtian's defenders could continue resisting. Though he and the soldiers who died at Fengtian received no posthumous honors following the war, his martial legacy continued through Zhang Yuan 17 18 23.
