Background / History

Chen Wu is the son of Chen Youde, a Black Robe Guard who died during the battle of Fengtian County City. After Chen Youde's death, Zhang Yuan arranged for Chen Wu to enter the Luyang Prefecture Martial Guard Bureau when he became old enough to inherit the family’s service. 24

He was among the first youths educated at Yulin Academy, a group made up largely of children of Zhang Yuan’s fallen comrades. Zhang Yuan taught the students boxing, saber work, and military tactics; Young Master Tao taught literacy and Confucian learning; Hu Chunniu instructed them in battlefield first aid and basic medicine. 28

Chen Wu and Huang Sanliang later became Black Robe Guards. Chen Wu also taught Yulin Academy’s evening martial-arts classes, passing on the Ironclad Fist Zhang Yuan had taught him. 26 28

Personality

Chen Wu is reserved and blunt in daily life, initially refusing Feng Cheng’s invitation to drink without explanation. Despite this distant manner, he holds Zhang Yuan in deep respect and addresses him as an elder brother. 24

He is proud of the Black Robe Guard’s duty and reacts strongly to insults against it. When Tang Family disciples call the guards “imperial court lackeys,” Chen Wu steps forward to confront them and protects Feng Cheng’s disguised sister during the resulting fight. 43

His confidence is undermined by his upbringing and social standing. Though an elite young martial artist, he considers himself unworthy of Miss Feng because he is “just a Black Robe Guard” with little income. 27 28 In battle, he can also hesitate to deal lethal blows, a weakness Zhang Yuan identifies as dangerous for a future border soldier. 48 49
