Background / History

Mo Yuan was one of only two Five Virtues Kirins in the Primordial Wilderness. Shi Qilin nurtured him with his own essence blood and the power of the Five Virtues, making Mo Yuan his eldest son despite Mo Yuan not being born directly from him. Shi Qilin considered Mo Yuan’s cowardice a disgrace to both himself and the Kirin Clan. 27

Although Mo Yuan possessed the Five Virtues Kirin constitution, he chose to cultivate the Causality Great Dao instead of the Five Elements Great Dao. His cautious nature and the karma carried by the Kirin Clan led him to avoid unnecessary battles and remain within his secluded domain whenever possible. 27 58

Mo Yuan first encountered Xuanxiao after the Kirin Clan became connected to Thunder Marsh through an avatar token. Xuanxiao bypassed Kirin Cliff’s defenses, killed Mo Yuan’s avatar, and nearly killed Mo Yuan himself. Mo Yuan immediately knelt and begged for mercy, persuading Xuanxiao to spare him on the condition that the Kirin Clan never interfere with Thunder Marsh. 27

During the Three Clans conflict, Mo Yuan’s extreme fear of death prevented him from being consumed by the Calamity Qi that drove many other beings into slaughter. Xuanxiao later used Mo Yuan as an opponent to bring the Three Pure Ones and Ancestral Witches closer together. Mo Yuan deliberately acted as a defeated victim, successfully improving relations among the group. 45 47

Xuanxiao eventually offered Mo Yuan a place at Thunder Marsh as either a disciple or a mount. Mo Yuan waited there for years, enduring the marsh’s lightning even after Xuanxiao forgot about him. When the newly established tribulation power began cleansing his Karma, Mo Yuan mistook the accidental benefit for a deliberate trial and forced himself into Thunder Marsh’s core. His perseverance finally convinced Xuanxiao to accept him as a mount. 47 86 87

As Xuanxiao’s mount, Mo Yuan lived in Primordial Hall and benefited from its dense, pure spiritual energy. He also became associated with Xuanxiao’s fortune, allowing him to obtain opportunities that would normally have been difficult for a member of the Karma-laden Kirin Clan. 87 117 242

Mo Yuan continued to support the Kirin Clan despite avoiding its political responsibilities. Before leaving with Xuanxiao, he gave the clan a large collection of spiritual treasures and fruits that he had accumulated during his travels. 136

Mo Yuan is a Five Virtues Kirin who is frequently depicted in his qilin form. His body was badly scorched while he endured Thunder Marsh, but he continued advancing toward its core despite his injuries. 86 87

Personality

Mo Yuan is intensely afraid of death and treats survival as more important than pride or reputation. When Xuanxiao threatened him, he surrendered without hesitation; when the Three Pure Ones pursued him, he used concealment techniques, talismans, substitute bodies, and teleportation rather than fight directly. 27 299

His cowardice is paired with considerable cunning. He can manipulate Karma threads, stage convincing performances, deceive powerful cultivators, and exploit confusion without exposing himself. Xuanxiao considers him exceptionally skilled at handling relationships and schemes, even though Mo Yuan’s reckless mouth frequently creates trouble. 47 261

Mo Yuan is also lazy and strongly attracted to safety, comfort, and powerful protection. After becoming Xuanxiao’s mount, he viewed Primordial Hall as an ideal place to “lie flat” while cultivating under the protection of his master. 87

Despite his self-interest, Mo Yuan is loyal to Xuanxiao and protective of those connected to him. He remained beside Gou Chen during a losing battle despite having the best chance of escaping, and he later intervened to protect his wife’s family, the Phoenix Clan. 229 816 782

Mo Yuan’s initial role is that of the Kirin Clan’s cowardly Young Master, whose survival instincts keep him away from the Three Clans’ conflict. His encounter with Xuanxiao transforms his position and gives the Kirin Clan a powerful external connection. 27 45

Xuanxiao’s Mount

After enduring Thunder Marsh, Mo Yuan becomes Xuanxiao’s mount and resides in Primordial Hall. He gains access to Xuanxiao’s protection, resources, and influence while continuing to pursue a comfortable, low-risk existence. 87 108

Heart-Questioning Tower

Xuanxiao orders Mo Yuan to win first place in the Heart-Questioning Tower. Mo Yuan reaches the final trial alongside Laozi and Gou Chen, survives their shared eighth-floor challenge, and becomes the unexpected first-place winner after the other two are eliminated. 220 230

His victory earns him the Dao Venerable’s Edict and directly helps Shi Qilin overcome the Primordial Unity Lightning Tribulation by preventing the Heavenly Dao from targeting him. 231 242 245

Mo Yuan’s long hesitation over Huo Ling’er stems from his fear that a Dao Companion would create additional risks and obligations. After realizing that she might move on with Qiuniu, he finally confesses and asks her to become his Dao Companion. 243 272 273

Mo Yuan remains cautious even after becoming one of the Primordial Wilderness’s most formidable figures. When the newly ascended Three Pure Ones attempt to ambush him, he flees through concealment techniques and ultimately escapes using a substitute clone and Xuanxiao’s Jade Talisman. 299

He later acts as a Saint enforcing the Heavenly Dao’s order. Although Kong Xuan is his brother-in-law, Mo Yuan refuses to excuse the Phoenix Clan’s interference in the Human Realm and takes them away from Three Mountains Pass. 782 786
