Xuanxiao initially believed himself to be a Blue Star human who had crossed into Chaos. Pangu revealed that these memories came from a dissipated human consciousness absorbed by the Sea of Lightning; Xuanxiao himself was the Sea of Lightning's newly born consciousness and the incarnation of the Lightning Great Dao's origin 2 5.

He was born as the tenth Chaos Demon God and proclaimed his authority over the Thunder Great Dao. His original Dao Body was covered in Thunder Dao patterns and accompanied by the opposing powers of destruction and life 3. Though Pangu had destroyed the system associated with Xuanxiao after it attempted to draw upon his power, Pangu showed no hostility toward him and instead sought his knowledge of Chaos and the future 2.

Xuanxiao became Pangu's sworn younger brother in all but name. He chose to support Pangu's creation of the Primordial World despite knowing the Chaos Demon Gods were destined to fall, fighting the incoming Demon Gods and eventually self-destructing during the Heaven-Opening Tribulation 8 10 12.

Afterward, he separated a sliver of origin from the Sea of Lightning to take form anew in the Primordial World. Pangu granted him the Authority of Tribulation Punishment, while the Great Dao awarded him the Primordial Realm for helping perfect the world's evolution 13 14.

After awakening in the Primordial World, Xuanxiao cultivated at Buzhou Mountain and used Pangu's lingering Great Dao of Strength as a reference for his own path. Rather than follow Strength Dao, he resolved to use the Thunder Great Dao as the foundation for commanding and ultimately unifying the ten thousand Daos 15.

During his subsequent travels, the Heavenly Dao formally bestowed the title of Dao Venerable upon him. He explored the Primordial World for ten Primordial Unity Calamity Cycles, attained a level comparable to Hongjun and Luohu, and received Creation Marrow from Pangu's lingering will at Buzhou Mountain 22 24. He restored the gravely injured Gou Chen with the Human Pill and later settled the disposition of three conquered Great Thousand Worlds by ordering their merger into the Primordial Wilderness as shared training grounds 822 848.

Appearance

Xuanxiao's original Chaos Demon God body stood tens of millions of zhang tall, bearing the majesty of the Thunder Great Dao 3. After reincarnating, he commonly adopts the form of a striking Daoist with black hair threaded in platinum-gold lightning and a black divine robe patterned with solidified thunder 15.

When he descends without concealing his Dao might, even supreme experts struggle to retain an image of his face. His presence can make an entire Great Thousand World's laws and Great Daos submit, yet he may withdraw that pressure and appear as an ordinary, serene Daoist 639.

• Hongjun — A powerful contemporary and occasional collaborator. Hongjun conveyed the Heavenly Dao's bestowal of the Dao Venerable title, while Xuanxiao remains wary of Hongjun's Dao-integration and its loss of personal freedom 22 144 193. They also traveled together while each sought to understand the other 23.
• Luohu — Former Chaos-era associate and recurrent adversarial collaborator. Xuanxiao interfered with Luohu's destructive schemes, accepted the Four Swords of Zhu Xian from him, and later rescued him from the Life Demon God's influence 33 65 642.
• Gou Chen — Direct disciple. Xuanxiao assists his cultivation, helps him refine the Heavenly Court's spiritual key, and entrusts him with formation knowledge 28 131 132. After Gou Chen suffered near-fatal damage during the Outer Realm conflict, Xuanxiao saved him with the Human Pill 822.
• The Three Pure Ones — His nephews. He protects, disciplines, and mentors Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian in their respective Daos 17 246. His early sermon accelerated their birth, and he warned them against conflict with their twelve siblings 22. Despite their reverence, they retain enough familial familiarity to ask him directly for orchard fruits, which he supplies despite his complaints 848.
• The Ancestral Witches — His nieces and nephews through Pangu. He chastises them with divine thunder but protects their interests, including preventing Houtu's sacrifice and relocating Pangu Hall for them 78 84. Their initial resistance ended after he subdued all twelve and they acknowledged him as Second Uncle 42.
• Houtu — Niece and later Lord of the Earthly Dao. Xuanxiao brings forth the Earthly Dao early so that she need not sacrifice herself 78 526.
• Yang Mei — Former Chaos-era peer and eventual collaborator. Their relationship shifts from mutual testing over Pangu's fate to cooperation in the Netherworld Underworld and Earthly Dao matters 38 75 251.
• Daoist Yin-Yang — An Innate Divine Being formed from the Yin-Yang Demon God's remnant origin, rather than the same Chaos-era individual. Xuanxiao initially mistook him for his old acquaintance and subsequently surpassed him in Yin-Yang Dao comprehension 17 18. Xuanxiao later aided his remnant soul's recovery and arranged for him to undertake a task in exchange for resolving the Heavenly Dao's pursuit 156.
• Mo Yuan — Mount and subordinate. Though Xuanxiao often finds him shameless or cowardly, he protects and rewards him 118 220. He accepted Mo Yuan into his service, encouraged him to resolve his relationship with Huo Ling'er, and ultimately officiated their marriage 47 243 437. He later bestowed the Causality Compass upon him 822.
• Huo Ling'er — Phoenix Clan junior and Mo Yuan's eventual wife. Xuanxiao healed her unborn brothers as repayment for access to the Phoenix Script, brought her to Hongjun's second sermon, and supported her relationship with Mo Yuan 142 243 437.
• Ancestral Dragon, Yuanfeng, and Shi Qilin — Leaders of the Three Clans whom he hosted, mediated between, and rescued from the worst consequences of their conflict 31 53. He later encouraged their breakthroughs to strengthen the Five Spirits Guardian Great Array and the Primordial World 243.
• Zidian and Yunting — Attendants and trusted junior disciples. Xuanxiao gave them the Thunder Spirit Deluded Heart Returns to Origin Scripture after they refused to rely on the Three Corpses method 223.
• Minghe — A favored younger cultivator whom Xuanxiao instructed alongside the Ancestral Witches during his thousand-year sermon at the Sea of Blood 83.
• Gui Mi — A northern Primordial Wilderness guardian whom Xuanxiao guided in the Dream Dao and rewarded with the Dreamy Glazed Lamp 246.
• Zhenwu and Six-Eared Macaque — Grand-disciples through Gou Chen. Xuanxiao accepted their connection to his lineage and bestowed spiritual treasures that aided their breakthroughs 260.
• Wu — Xuanxiao's avatar and the first human of the Primordial World. Wu carries Xuanxiao's Martial Dao legacy among the Human Race 283 333.
• Yuan Chen and Xi Yao — Chaos experts who swore Great Dao oaths to Xuanxiao and became his subordinates 666.
• Nezha, Jingwei, Hanba, and Shen Gongbao — Younger members of his lineage whom he treats as family, personally granting them spiritual treasures and guidance 543. He explicitly recognized Shen Gongbao as his grand-disciple despite the latter's humble origins 543.
• Shichen — Chaos-era peer with whom Xuanxiao sparred in the River of Time using the upgraded Nine Heavens Destruction Halberd, and later discussed Pangu and the Primordial World's development 207 213.
• Mingyun / Fate Demon God — A powerful contemporary whose persistent attempts to investigate Xuanxiao's destiny provoke unusually strong fear and aversion in him 213. Xuanxiao later confronted him over interference with Hongyun's fate and secured a promise to limit his involvement 220.
• Wang Shu — Great Yin Star Lord and reincarnation of the Yin portion of the Yin-Yang Demon God's origin. Xuanxiao spent years accompanying her, playing chess, and investigating her unusual reincarnation before departing 274.
• Dugu Baitian and the Demon Lord — Visitors from the Tomb of Gods World who sought aid against their corrupted Heavenly Dao. Xuanxiao strengthened them with Great Dao Fruits, gave them spiritual treasures, and made clear that intervention would require their world's subordination to the Primordial Wilderness 599 601.
• Jieyin and Zhunti — Western Sages whose contributions and hardships in the Outer Realm war he acknowledged with four High Grade Innate Spirit Treasures 822. He later reaffirmed to the Three Pure Ones that Buddhism would flourish 848.
• Tai Yi — A powerful Golden Crow whom Xuanxiao overwhelmed as the final tribulation opponent. Tai Yi emerged humbled and grateful after discovering that the beating had strengthened his Dao foundation 842.

Major Arcs

Heaven-Opening Tribulation

Xuanxiao fought at Pangu's side against the Chaos Demon Gods, personally clearing the weaker waves before facing the Destruction Demon God. He chose self-destruction rather than become a burden during Pangu's final creation of the Primordial World 9 10 12.

Establishing Primordial Order

After reincarnation, Xuanxiao used his Tribulation Punishment Authority to influence the Primordial World's development. He helped establish the era's tribulation order and later intervened in the Netherworld Underworld's development by manifesting the Six Paths of Samsara ahead of its destined time 61 78.

He later formalized Lightning Tribulations and Longevity Tribulations as universal laws, strengthened the Nine Heavens Thunder Punishment Mirror with merit, and established a system intended to replace devastating concentrated calamities with smaller recurring trials 64.

Three Clans and the Dao-Demon Conflict

Xuanxiao initially intended to leave the Three Clans' competition alone unless it caused catastrophic damage to the Primordial World 22. After hosting their ancestors at Thunder Marsh, he traveled west with Gou Chen, discovered Luohu's hidden Demonic Qi in the spiritual veins, and prepared a countermeasure while secretly collecting resources under concealing illusions 31 33.

Upon attaining Primordial Grand Luo Golden Immortal, he attacked Karma, whom he identified as the instigator of the premature eruption of the world's karma threads 52. He then halted the battle between Ancestral Dragon, Yuanfeng, and Shi Qilin, condemned the destruction they had caused, and prevented Ancestral Dragon's immediate sacrifice to suppress the sea eye. He proposed that Candle Dragon and others undertake duties at the sea eyes and Undying Volcano as part of the clans' atonement 53.

Founding the Dao of Script

At Buzhou Mountain, Xuanxiao established the Dao of Script and forged four treasures to carry it. The Great Dao, Heavenly Dao, and Earthly Dao all responded, while Xuanxiao received the greatest share of the resulting merits 190 192.

The undertaking followed extensive travel among the myriad races to study their inherited runes, including the Kirin Post, Phoenix Script, and Dragon Chapter. His goal was a universal means of communication that would preserve knowledge and reduce disparities between beings 119 121 138 175.

River of Time Encounters

Xuanxiao entered the River of Time to spar with Shichen, revealing that the Nine Heavens Destruction Halberd had become a Chaos Supreme Treasure 207. After the fighting in Chaos concluded, he discussed the Primordial World's development with Shichen and expressed confidence that its cultivators could increasingly manage its affairs themselves 213.

The arrival of the Fate Demon God disrupted this calm. Xuanxiao fled from him, and the two engaged in a chase and fight in the River of Time, exposing Xuanxiao's longstanding aversion to the Demon God's obsessive investigation of his destiny 213.

Taichu Realm

Xuanxiao opened the Taichu Realm as a place where Primordial beings can cultivate, undertake trials, exchange resources through Taichu Coins, and preserve their knowledge in Book Mountain. The realm also records its visitors' physical information, Divine Abilities, and Dao comprehension to nourish Xuanxiao's long-term pursuit of the Dao 219.

The realm's Heart-Questioning Tower offers multiple Methods of Attaining Dao and is intended to gather enough faith, destiny power, and accumulated insight for the Taichu Realm to eventually shed its false nature and become a real world comparable to the Primordial World 223 225.

The initial virtual realm was constructed with the Four Treasures of the Study, the Chaos Dao Derivation Diagram, and other supreme treasures. Its trials transform numerous natural and destructive energies into cultivation opportunities without the ordinary danger of falling, while time-manipulated resource areas sustain its supply of treasures and spiritual fruits 218.

Xuanxiao disclosed the recording system to participants and provided compensation through Taichu Coins. Techniques could remain confidential or be published for payments whenever others learned them, making the realm both a knowledge repository and a compensated exchange network 219.

Guidance of Later Generations

He continued shaping the Primordial Era through mentorship: helping the Three Pure Ones forge their own cultivation paths, advising the Ancestral Witches on the Martial Dao and Divine Path, and supporting his disciples' descendants with treasures and instruction 246 309 400.

Xuanxiao further guided the Human Race through Wu's Martial Dao legacy, aided Fuxi's pursuit of a deduction method for mortals, and personally instructed younger lineage members including Nezha, Jingwei, Hanba, and Shen Gongbao 292 419 543.

After a thirty-thousand-year sermon in Cangming Heaven, he contributed two Chaos Great Dao Fruits to the Heavenly Prodigy Tournament's prizes 258. During the same gathering, he accepted Zhenwu and Six-Eared Macaque's entry into Gou Chen's discipleship, bestowed powerful welcome gifts, and created independent spaces for their breakthroughs and tribulations 260.

When traveling with Nezha, Jingwei, Hanba, and Shen Gongbao, he revealed his identity as Taichu Daoist and confirmed that he had taught Nezha's scripture. He then took them toward the East Sea to allow Nezha's unresolved karma with that region to unfold naturally 543.

Completing the Earth Marriage

Xuanxiao recognized Mo Yuan's feelings for Huo Ling'er and encouraged him to take responsibility for repairing their misunderstandings 142 243. He later planned to push Mo Yuan toward completion of the Earth Marriage rather than allow continued avoidance 419.

At the eventual ceremony in the Primordial Hall, Xuanxiao personally officiated and witnessed Mo Yuan and Huo Ling'er's union in his capacity as Dao Venerable. Nuwa supplied the Red Embroidered Ball as the marriage was formally recognized, completing the Three Marriages of Heaven, Earth, and Man 437.

Seclusion and Outer Realm Schemes

Xuanxiao entered deep seclusion in his Sea of Lightning form, sealing the Primordial Realm behind formations and entrusting Houtu with the Netherworld Underworld's affairs. His withdrawal stirred the ambitions of hidden Chaos beings, but he continued to influence events through avatars and long-term arrangements 438.

He scattered systems and memories among derivative Great Thousand Worlds to observe their development, later using the arrival of surviving System holders, transmigrators, and reborn beings as part of his broader understanding of the myriad worlds 433.

His return under the Taichu identity allowed him to interact with later generations without immediately advertising his identity to everyone. Yuanshi recognized the alias as Xuanxiao's and interpreted his assistance to a Chan Sect disciple as special familial favor 552.

Interworld Conflicts

After entering seclusion in his Sea of Lightning form, Xuanxiao later descended into other Great Thousand Worlds. He imprisoned a world's Heavenly Dao origin, permitted its ancient rebels to settle their own karma, saved Luohu from the Life Demon God, and observed Gou Chen's clash with the Origin Realm's creator god 438 639 642 651.

Before intervening in the Tomb of Gods World, he hosted Dugu Baitian and the Demon Lord in the Primordial Realm, strengthened them with Great Dao Fruits, and toured the Primordial Wilderness with them. He made clear that assistance would turn their home into a subordinate world, a condition they accepted as preferable to destruction by their Evil Heavenly Dao 599.

On the Heaven-Connecting Road, Xuanxiao sealed Taishang's powers and soul after revealing that the Heavenly Dao's origin had already been imprisoned. He nevertheless respected the Demon Lord and his allies' request to finish their ancient struggle themselves and opened a passage to the captured source 639.

During the conflict with the Life Demon God, Xuanxiao used judgment thunder to counter her Life-Extinction Great Dao and deceived her into exposing a tenth of the life essence she had accumulated by devouring three Great Thousand Worlds 643.

Closing the Net

Xuanxiao revealed that an apparent Outer Realm crisis had been a calculated trap to draw hidden Chaos enemies into the open. Though acting through an incarnation, he entered the battlefield with Luohu and the Ancestral Witches, overturned the battle's balance, and ordered the Primordial Sages to seal Heaven, Earth, and Chaos so the exposed enemies could not escape 817.

The five hidden enemies exposed by Karma were Annihilation, Five Elements, Void, Devouring, and Kunwu. By the subsequent turn in the battle, they were trapped and losing against Hongjun, Wu, and the assembled Sages 822.

Xuanxiao returned to Mo Yuan and the unconscious Gou Chen, bestowed the Causality Compass upon Mo Yuan, and rewarded Jieyin and Zhunti with four High Grade Innate Spirit Treasures. He reassured Mo Yuan that Gou Chen would survive and administered the Human Pill, restoring his disciple's nearly destroyed body and origin 822.

He also confirmed that the Immortal Realm was repelling the three invading Outer Realm worlds and that the Witch and Asura Clans had destroyed the Netherworld's nightmare creatures and sealed the invasion passages. His barrier kept the Human Realm protected and its time suspended while his avatar and Luohu reinforced the Three Pure Ones elsewhere 822.

Tai Yi's Final Tribulation

After Tai Yi repeatedly provoked his Primordial Unity Heavenly Tribulation, Xuanxiao manifested as its final opponent. Restricted to early-stage Primordial Golden Immortal cultivation for a quarter-hour, he first healed Tai Yi and then overwhelmed him with lightning and physical blows, piercing his Golden Crow wing and damaging the Eastern Emperor Bell 842.

Once the phantom disappeared, the Heavenly Dao supplied origin and creation energy to restore and temper Tai Yi. Tai Yi discovered that Xuanxiao's attacks had infused pure Lightning Great Dao origin into him, breaking his shackles and deepening his foundation. He became grateful and ashamed of his earlier suspicions, although Xuanxiao privately regarded the fight primarily as enjoyable 842.

Allocation of the Conquered Worlds

The factions that conquered three Great Thousand Worlds failed to agree on their division. Xuanxiao settled the dispute by ordering the worlds merged into the Primordial Wilderness and developed as shared training grounds 848.

Renewed Enlightenment

Xuanxiao later became immersed in enlightenment and remained unaware of the changes occurring outside. His comprehension of Dao resonance nurtured a living being approaching birth in the Buddhist lands of the Western Ox Continent, whose arrival was described as destined to alter Buddhism's future 859.
