Background / History

Zhao Yuling gave Little Turtle to Chu He after overhearing his curiosity about whether a turtle could outlive him. Chu He began raising it as a long-term experiment and companion, intending to compare their lifespans. 23

While living at the Book Repository, Little Turtle received surplus pills, spiritual medicines, and treasures from Chu He. Its intelligence gradually awakened; it began recognizing people differently, resisting Zhao Yuling's teasing, and seeking safety with Chu He. Chu He eventually gave it a body-tempering cultivation method selected specifically for a turtle's physique. 24 25

Its growth later made the Book Repository too cramped. Chu He relocated the hill-sized Great Turtle to the Blue River, taught it to swim, and ordered it not to harm people or leave the river recklessly. Though initially terrified of being left behind, it gradually adjusted to river life and became increasingly independent. 40 42

In the Blue River, it befriended a Black Snake that lured it into a giant beast's trap. The betrayal left Little Turtle with a lasting hatred of snakes. Chu He rescued it, refined the giant beast and Black Snake, and assisted Little Turtle through its bottleneck; the turtle emerged in a smaller golden form and returned home as Little Gold. 42 44

Appearance

Little Turtle began as a small green-shelled turtle with mung-bean-sized eyes, a retractable head, and an exceptionally tough shell. After its breakthrough, it became a gleaming golden turtle able to alter its size—from something small enough to hide beneath Chu He's chair to a massive form capable of pinning down King-realm enemies. 24 44 72

Personality

Little Turtle is lazy, homebound, food-motivated, and strongly attached to Chu He. It dislikes adventure and repeatedly refuses chances to travel or seek opportunities, preferring to sleep, eat Royal Dog Food, clean, and remain near the Book Repository. 92 108 332

Despite protesting when teased, it becomes unsettled when Zhao Yuling suddenly stops petting it. It is similarly clingy toward Chu He, often hugging his leg or reacting fearfully whenever it thinks he might abandon it. 37 51 144

It dislikes fighting and would rather “hold the field” than enter a battle directly. However, it is stubbornly vindictive toward snakes because of the Black Snake's betrayal, and it is willing to bully or discipline snakes placed under its supervision. 52 69
