Background / History
Yu Sheng lived what he describes as an ordinary life for more than twenty years before becoming entangled with Otherworlds and Entities. Despite the abilities he later displays, he initially knows little about the supernatural, the wider world beyond Boundary City, or how to handle Entities. He actively seeks guidance from Special Operations Bureau personnel and Little Red Riding Hood 57.
During the Nightfall Valley incident, Yu Sheng is consumed by the Entity known as Hunger, but returns apparently unharmed and without memory of his death. His blood and consciousness trigger Hunger's self-devouring chain reaction, while he gains a subtle connection to the valley and can distinguish the parasitic Dark Angel from the Otherworld itself 54.
After rescuing Huli and taking responsibility for Eileen, Yu Sheng establishes the Inn with them. The group registers as an organization, and the Special Operations Bureau provides a dedicated communication device and later maintains contact through an observation station near No. 66 Wutong Road 85 272.
Yu Sheng repeatedly uses death and rebirth as a means of entering, exploring, and influencing hostile Otherworlds. In the Black Forest, he allows an evil wolf to consume him, infiltrating its spirit and extending his awareness into the Fairy Tale Otherworld 124. He later attempts to reach the Black Forest's deeper “backstage” by communicating with the Hunter and showing it a photograph of the deep-diver team that may have become trapped there 154.
After capturing the Pillar of Order spacecraft, Yu Sheng learns that the Hermetic Society creates Artificial Saintesses and Brass Knights from living people. The discovery becomes a personal vendetta and a long-term goal: to find and oppose the society despite the Inn's limited strength 319.
His connection to Shu Ji eventually deepens until he can perceive locations across the planet and beyond. Yuan Ling and Yuan Hao propose that he become Shu Ji's Star Guardian, a responsibility he accepts 460. He later uses the planet's resources and workforce for technological, industrial, and defensive projects.
Personality
Yu Sheng is candid about what he does not know, curious about unfamiliar phenomena, and inclined to learn by direct experimentation. He often approaches danger with unusual calmness—even treating death, blood loss, and hostile Entities as opportunities to investigate something new 57 104 124.
He is generally easygoing and avoids unnecessary conflict, but becomes serious when others are endangered or exploited. The Hermetic Society's treatment of people as material for Artificial Saintesses and Knights provokes a lasting anger that motivates his campaign against them 272 316 319.
Despite his eccentric methods, Yu Sheng is patient and protective toward the Inn's members. He teaches Huli how to use ordinary household facilities, repairs Eileen's damaged bodies, worries about Zheng Zhi's safety in Mist City, and makes practical plans to improve his companions' chances of survival 58 163 527.
Abilities & Skills
Death and Resurrection
Yu Sheng can return after being killed, though the event may initially be forgotten or only remembered by others after a delay.
- He returns after being consumed by Hunger, with no memory of his death 54.
- He deliberately lets the evil wolf kill and consume him to infiltrate the Black Forest 124.
- His repeated survivals make him difficult for enemies to eliminate permanently; “Yun Qingzi” fails to kill him despite multiple fatal attacks 439.
- His deaths can unsettle or confuse companions, especially when memories of the event return later 148.
Blood Control and Blood Connections
Yu Sheng's blood can contaminate, erode, connect with, and influence beings or environments.
- A being that consumes or contacts his blood may develop a delayed reaction and a connection to him 125.
- He can use blood contact to protect people affected by Fairy Tale, though the method requires him to lose blood 183.
- Blood on his Tetanus Staff erodes targets; repeated contact can establish a link through which Yu Sheng senses changes in an enemy and may interfere with or anticipate its actions 542.
- He can mark objects and vessels with his blood, including a Hermetic Society ship infiltrated under deception 674.
- His blood's effects are dangerous and not fully understood, including to Yu Sheng himself 104.
Otherworld Perception and Manipulation
Yu Sheng can sense and interact with the boundaries, structures, and inhabitants of Otherworlds.
- After the Nightfall Valley incident, he perceives Hunger's entities and identifies the Dark Angel as foreign to the valley 54.
- He can enter Fairy Tale subsets without the effect that restricts ordinary adults, making him uniquely useful to the Special Operations Bureau 154.
- He senses when No. 66 Wutong Road begins “falling” toward the Otherworld and personally investigates the fog boundary 275.
- He can communicate with certain Otherworld entities, including the cats of Dark Alley, by physically interacting with them 595.
- He can create unstable, incomplete World Bridge-like rifts, though he admits they are not yet mature 610.
Spatial Doors and Transport
Yu Sheng creates doors that connect distant locations.
- He uses phantom doors to access the Pillar of Order and chooses routes for convenience 315.
- He can connect remote locations to No. 66 Wutong Road through makeshift portable doors 393.
- He transports the house itself, accidentally relocating No. 66 Wutong Road and a Special Operations Bureau outpost to Thousand Peaks Spirit Mountain 341.
- He uses doors to rapidly send companions to safe locations or enter the Special Operations Bureau directly 594.
Consciousness and Planetary Perception
Yu Sheng can extend his consciousness over immense distances and interface with large-scale systems.
- He merges his consciousness with the Pillar of Order and pilots it through a successful long-distance warp jump 314.
- Direct contact with hyperspace allows him to perceive foundational structures of the world, though the process is dangerous due to the density of information 389.
- As Shu Ji's Star Guardian, he senses the planet's regions, infrastructure, atmosphere, and activity while practicing precise control over each sensory endpoint 460.
- He can survey Shu Ji's interior while acting elsewhere and activate ancient industrial infrastructure 469.
Combat
Yu Sheng primarily fights at close range but has developed ranged blood-based weaponry.
- He uses a reinforced wolf-tooth club, the Tetanus Staff, in direct combat 297.
- He can shatter spatial barriers to expose concealed enemies 397.
- He relies on resilience, improvisation, and immediate action when facing hostile entities and cultivators 397 439.
- He uses a Blood Needle Launcher against Hermetic Society forces, exploiting their Power Armor against them 622.
