Background / History
The God of Death was one of the Five Great Gods and ruled the Underworld through the Underworld Godhead. His domain granted him control over endless necromancy and the souls entering the River Styx; he stated that no soul entering his Underworld was ever returned. 70 71 115
During the Five Gods' investigation into the God of the Internet, he used living souls to access the Internet and concluded that its source was not Thorne. He also supported conquering the Kevil Empire after recognizing the potential of Conquest of Sub-Plane. 70
After the failed offensive against Kevil, he began studying how to reproduce the Internet. He openly admitted this ambition before the other gods, then created the Dark Web within the Underworld. 135 147
Under the name Sawyer, he used the Dark Web to rapidly expand the Fifth Calamity and harvest Source Essence. At its early peak, the Dark Web had two billion users, while his missionary zones spanned twenty-seven planes and contained more than ten billion subjects. 152
His war against the God of the Internet and the Four Righteous Gods depleted his forces and forced him to abandon less valuable missionary zones. He repeatedly sought alliances to reverse his decline, including offers to share Dark Web revenue and even the Underworld Authority. 180 218 235 283
He later hunted the God of Transformation and absorbed the Transformation Godhead. However, the two gods' soul-based methods ultimately caused them to merge into one entity. Yu Sheng'an subsequently stole the Underworld Godhead and destroyed Sawyer's true body with a nuclear strike, though a soul fragment escaped. 359 360 362
Appearance
Sawyer commonly appeared as a pale, corpse-like man in black robes.
- Pale, bloodless complexion. 152 360
- Black robes. 70 360
- Ruled from a Divine Throne in the Underworld Palace on Glazed Mountain. 152
- His revealed soul form was a grotesque, Titan-like construct with countless differently shaped eyes, scaled skin, and dragon-horn-like external bones. 361
Personality
Sawyer was aggressive, hot-tempered, and highly decisive. Former allies described his usual style as arrogant and forceful, while his own rule of the Underworld relied heavily on fear: subordinate gods understood that their lives depended on his will. 157 365
He was also observant and adaptive. He recognized the Internet's capacity to extract both Source Essence and collective intelligence from missionary zones, copied its model through the Dark Web, and devised countermeasures against expected Internet updates. 152 157
His ambition frequently became recklessness. As the Dark Web expanded, he grew convinced that it was the ultimate weapon and dismissed threats that later endangered his position. His fear of Yu Sheng'an led to violent outbursts, including the execution of a servant god who delivered alarming news. 152 157 226
Abilities & Skills
Underworld Authority
As holder of the Underworld Godhead, Sawyer governed the Underworld and exercised exceptional control over souls and necromancy.
- Commanded vast undead forces, including regular undead legions, Undead Dragons, Bone Dragons, Dark Knights, banshees, and high-order lords. 86 157 283
- Could control or manipulate souls, including using living souls to access the Internet. 70
- Used Soul Swap and drew a major part of his combat power from it. 261 318
- His power was concentrated in his soul, allowing his spirit to survive the destruction of his body. 361
- Could convert living warriors into undead through Undead Conversion. 165
Fifth Calamity
Sawyer created the Fifth Calamity through the Dark Web's God of Death Follower feature.
- Users could split off a portion of their soul and fuse it into an undead body, effectively controlling an undead avatar. 149
- Players could replace damaged bones with scavenged parts; stronger parts required sufficient necromantic power to operate. 149
- The Underworld's abundance of fallen undead made low- and mid-level bone parts inexpensive and plentiful. 149
- Sawyer organized new users into isolated Novice Villages to limit sabotage and supervise pseudo-believers. 157
- The Fifth Calamity could be resurrected repeatedly and numbered in the hundreds of millions. 152
Dark Web
The Dark Web was Sawyer's divine-art network and his principal instrument for gathering Source Essence and coordinating the Underworld.
- Copied nearly all major Internet functions, including Social, Forum, Library, Online Course, Q&A Community, music, banking, and a sub-plane conquest game. 149
- Renamed selected services: Music Sanctuary became Music Temple, Conquest of Sub-Plane became God of Death Follower, and Internet Bank became Dark Web Bank. 149
- Added original features including visible player nicknames and a more intuitive beginner tutorial for God of Death Follower. 149
- Enabled long-distance command and communication across his sprawling missionary zones. 180
- Greatly increased Source Essence income and allowed the Underworld Pantheon to recruit and reward followers. 152 157
Transformation Authority
After defeating the God of Transformation, Sawyer absorbed the Transformation Godhead and obtained the Authority of Transformation. 359 360
- Could transform one form of energy into another, demonstrated by changing magic into Soul Power, Battle Qi, and Vitality. 360
- The acquisition strengthened the Dark Web's potential access to energy-based services. 363
- The godhead's soul traits ultimately contributed to Sawyer's merger with the God of Transformation. 362
Organization
Underworld Pantheon
Sawyer established the Underworld Pantheon to turn the Underworld's disorganized undead into a functional military and administrative force. 157
- Recruited talent from the Underworld and wider Multiverse with Virtual Godheads, eternal life, and Source Essence. 157
- Distributed one ten-thousandth of harvested Source Essence to subordinates, binding them into a community of shared interests. 157
- Included Subordinate Gods, Servant Gods, Underworld lords, summoners, and necromantic legions. 157
- Maintained authority through terror; Sawyer could kill high-ranking servants on a whim. 157 158
Relationships
- Yu Sheng'an / God of the Internet — Primary rival. Sawyer copied the Internet through the Dark Web, fought him for influence over the Multiverse, and was ultimately deprived of his Godhead by him. 149 180 362
- God of Transformation / Wordsworth — Target and eventual victim of Sawyer's hunt; their opposing soul-research methods caused them to merge after Sawyer took the Transformation Godhead. 359 360 362
- God of War — Fellow Five Great God and frequent verbal antagonist; the two argued openly despite occasionally sharing strategic goals. 70 71
- God of Life — Fellow Five Great God. The God of Life possessed a portion of Soul Authority and exposed Sawyer's attempt to replicate the Internet. 70 135
- Duke — Fanatically devoted Subordinate God who praised Sawyer's Dark Web expansion and reported military matters. 152 157
- Elro — Servant God entrusted with the Fifth Calamity's Novice Villages. 157
- God of Mechanical Steam — Dark Web vassal who expected Sawyer's Transformation Authority to support his Divine Rune Steam Engine. 363
Story Role / Major Arcs
Five Gods and the Kevil War
As a Five Great God, Sawyer investigated the mysterious God of the Internet, advocated action against Kevil, and committed vast undead forces to the campaign. His armies included eleven Undead Dragons, each approaching Grand Archmage-level strength. 70 86
Creation of the Dark Web
Sawyer reacted to the Internet's rise by replicating it in the Underworld. The resulting Dark Web and God of Death Follower system transformed his undead population into a source of both military power and Source Essence. 135 149 152
War Against the Internet Pantheon
With the Fifth Calamity expanded, Sawyer attacked the Taylor Dynasty, Kevil Empire, and Willis City. He ordered guerrilla attacks against enemy agriculture and facilities, but Yu Sheng'an's Soul Projection Function and Curse: Deprivation undermined his advantage. 157 160 165
Decline and Alliance Attempts
Besieged by the Four Righteous Gods and pressured by Internet updates, Sawyer lost territory and sought to divide the gods against Yu Sheng'an. His proposals for film alliances, political coalitions, and shared authority repeatedly failed to secure a decisive reversal. 180 218 235 283
Hunt for the Transformation Godhead
Sawyer successfully ambushed and absorbed the God of Transformation, briefly restoring his standing in the Multiverse. The victory proved unstable: the two gods' souls merged, leaving Sawyer vulnerable to Yu Sheng'an's subsequent attack. 359 360 362
Loss of the Underworld
Yu Sheng'an stole the Underworld Godhead and destroyed Sawyer's true body. He then assumed the God of Death's identity to retain control over the Underworld Pantheon and Dark Web, leaving Sawyer's surviving soul fragment as the only known remnant. 362 364
