Background / History

Early relationship with Kino

The later account of Kino’s visit to the past reveals that he entered Gwen’s family home after presenting himself alongside “Dio Brando” and “Boa Hancock,” identities staged by Kino and Venom. Gwen believed the accompanying story about his family and circumstances 435 443.

Already newly empowered, Gwen could not produce webs herself. Kino made web-shooters for her, modified a radio to receive police frequencies, and advised her on her superhero uniform. They attended school together for several months, becoming increasingly close while Gwen began helping police stop robberies 439 440 441.

Kino eventually announced that he was returning to his New York manor. Gwen suspected he was concealing something, but did not yet know the truth behind his assumed family or his supposed need to hold something while sleeping 441 442.

Abomination attack

During a Manhattan outing with her family, Gwen encountered Kino and his companions. When the Abomination attacked, she intervened as Ghost-Spider to protect civilians and George, who was helping evacuate the area 21 22.

Unable to injure the monster, Gwen relied on taunts, webs, and evasive movement to draw it away from crowded streets. Finding Kino and his companions in its path, she placed herself between them and the Abomination. Her web barrier failed, and Kino intercepted the punch she had prepared to take 22 23.

Afterward, Gwen asked Kino to help move the fighting away from civilians. She also assisted Pamela’s rescue efforts, admiring her abilities and beginning to address her as “Sister Pamela” 23 24.

Joining Kino’s household

Kino concealed Gwen’s superhero identity from George by claiming Frank had taken her to the manor. Gwen stayed overnight and learned from Pamela how Venom allowed her to live safely despite her toxic body. Their conversation replaced Gwen’s initial jealousy with sympathy and admiration 28 29.

Kino placed a protective mark on Gwen’s palm and subsequently gave her the Whirlwind Ring. She kissed him before leaving and privately celebrated receiving the gift. By the later battle-suit discussion, she had implicitly accepted being his girlfriend 29 30 73.

Sandman encounter

Gwen pursued Sandman after an armored-car robbery, drawing him to a construction site and using the Whirlwind Ring to trap him in a tornado. She returned the stolen money to police and agreed to sign an officer’s autograph 70 71.

When Sandman broke free, Gwen could have escaped but refused to abandon the officers beside her. She launched herself toward his descending fist, only for Kino to catch her and destroy the sand giant’s arm 71.

Parallel-world Spider-People

A sudden dimensional opening pulled Gwen and Damian into another universe. Gwen managed to throw Xiaoyu clear before falling through, then activated her new Ghost-Spider suit and glided to safety with Damian secured behind her 124.

They sought out the home of that world’s deceased Peter Parker, where Aunt May sheltered other displaced Spider-People. Seeing Damian’s unease, Gwen introduced him as her child; he began calling her “Mommy Gwen” 125.

Gwen helped rescue captured Spider-Men with Prowler’s assistance. When Green Goblin later took Damian and Aunt May hostage, she surrendered her weapons and rushed to save Damian. Kino’s hidden protector, the Decapitator Demon, intervened 127 128.

The conflict escalated with the arrival of the Slaughter Demon, a fusion of Slaughter and Green Goblin. Gwen’s armor saved her from an otherwise lethal attack, but prolonged combat damaged the suit and exhausted its energy reserves. She entrusted Damian to Doctor Octopus and faced the creature alone, believing the other Spider-People had died 134 135 136.

Kino arrived before Norman could finish her off. He revealed that some of her companions were still alive and supplied potions so she could help them. Gwen later returned home with Kino, Venom, and Damian through Hell’s portal 136 142.

Later battles and family life

Gwen joined the fight against the Chitauri in her Spider-suit and repeatedly opposed Harley’s robberies and reckless stunts 208 213.

She later subdued a black-suited Spider-Woman who proved to be another Gwen. Although the household suspected the newcomer’s memories had been altered, Gwen defended her dignity and comforted her grief 312 314.

During a subsequent invasion, Gwen learned from Apocalypse that those who resurrected him had additional schemes. She also discovered that Harley had stored a bomb capable of destroying New York inside their home; Gwen, Harley, Galacta, and the nearby Spider-Men fled its explosion 320 327.

At Gwen’s graduation, Kino returned with his memories restored. Once she learned that his earlier story and supposed parents were fabricated, she confronted him angrily, recalling how she had mourned and visited their graves 443.

Gwen later became Aria’s mother. She named her daughter in the hope that she would remain lively and agile, while noting her unusually fast reactions and painful static electricity 455.

Appearance

Gwen is a blonde young woman with a slender waist and an athletic build, particularly visibly developed leg muscles 23 73 112.

  • Original costume: A black-and-white spider battle suit with green dancing shoes 22.
  • Ghost-Spider armor: A snow-white suit and mask with black-patterned white armor over key areas and a black spider emblem on the chest 124.
  • Activation bracelet: Worn on her right wrist and decorated with a white spider pattern 124.

Personality

Gwen repeatedly puts others’ safety ahead of her own. She stands against the Abomination to protect her father, refuses to abandon police officers to Sandman, and fights the Slaughter Demon alone so Damian can escape. These decisions also expose her tendency to accept attacks she cannot safely withstand 22 71 136.

She initially views her powers as a means to fight crime, not wage war. When Kino installs heavy weapons in her suit, she insists that she does not kill people. The parallel-world crisis forces her to use those weapons against an enemy far beyond ordinary criminals 28 135.

Outside combat, Gwen is proud, competitive, and easily embarrassed by affection. She rejects the idea of using Kino’s wealth to bypass academic effort, insisting that she can earn admission herself. Her attraction to Kino often appears through blushing, mock annoyance, jealousy, and protectiveness 30 73 439 440.

Her empathy extends to people she initially distrusts. She accepts Prowler’s appeal to save his nephew and comforts her alternate self after hearing about her losses. However, her willingness to believe others leaves her embarrassed when the household explains that Spider-Woman’s memories may be manipulated 127 314.
