Background

Du Jue and Tang Tianhao were adopted by Master Zhiqing of Qingshan Temple. Because Du Jue had superior talent and physique, Zhiqing taught him the Golden Bell Shield, while Tang Tianhao received the more gradual Boyhood Art. Du Jue remained at the temple as a devoted monk and martial artist, whereas Tang Tianhao eventually left the mountain, married, and had Tang Jie. 33 34

Du Jue retained resentment over Tang Tianhao's departure for more than twenty years. When Tang Tianhao returned with Tang Jie, Du Jue sparred with both of them; Tang Jie’s Red Sun Art ultimately defeated him. Recognizing Tang Jie’s strength and resolve, Du Jue agreed to teach him the Golden Bell Shield. 34 35 36

After Master Zhiqing’s death, Du Jue cremated his body as instructed and recovered the Sarira left behind. He later chose to give this Buddhist relic to Tang Jie despite knowing it could greatly advance his own cultivation. 38

Du Jue is a tall, powerfully built bald monk whose physique reflects years of Golden Bell Shield training. He is first seen in white monk’s robes, carrying water up Qingshan Temple’s steep path with two buckets on each shoulder. 33 92 125

Personality

Du Jue is intensely devoted to martial arts and rises before dawn to train. Tang Jie’s relentless practice eventually convinces him that Tang Jie’s extraordinary strength comes not only from talent, but also from exceptional discipline and effort. 34 37

He is blunt, competitive, and initially harsh toward Tang Tianhao, openly calling him useless during their reunion. However, he respects genuine strength: Tang Jie’s victory changes his attitude, leading him to teach his nephew the Golden Bell Shield and later entrust him with Master Zhiqing’s Sarira. 34 35 38

Du Jue is also compassionate and courageous. He acts without hesitation to save a hunter from falling off a cliff, though the incident exposes him to danger. 40
