Background / History
Kunpeng initially occupied one of the seats in Zixiao Palace, sensing that it held a great opportunity. He refused to yield until Ancestor Hongjun's influence and Primordial Heavenly Lord's hostility forced him to relinquish it, leaving him resentful but unable to resist. 5
He lived in the Northern Darkness Sea and preferred solitude. When Di Jun invited him to serve as the Demon Clan's strategist with status equal to Di Jun's, Kunpeng rejected the proposal after judging that the Demon Clan's ambition would make it an enemy of the Great Desolation. 27 Di Jun, Taiyi, and the Ten Great Demon Sages then attacked him. Badly injured and cornered, Kunpeng appealed to Nuwa for aid and offered to become her mount in return. 27
Shen Hongfei persuaded Di Jun to release him, and Kunpeng began carrying Nuwa, Shen Hongfei, and the Sanxiao Fairies. 28 His loyalty was initially uncertain: fearing that Nuwa's Monster-Recruiting Banner would permanently enslave the demon race, he attacked Fengqi Mountain to halt its refinement. 31 Shen Hongfei struck him with heavenly lightning and explained that the banner was intended as self-protection rather than solely as a means to control him. Kunpeng ultimately chose to follow both Shen Hongfei and Nuwa willingly. 32
After Nuwa attained Sainthood, Kunpeng's attitude toward being her mount changed from shame to pride. He even returned to the North Sea to tell former peers of his position, provoking their envy. 129 He later became a recognized emissary of Nuwa among the Human Race and a trusted protector of Shen Hongfei. 156 192
Appearance
Kunpeng possesses several forms, ranging from an enormous fish-bird true form to humanoid disguises suited to travel and diplomacy.
- In his colossal true form, he resembles both a fish and a bird, with wings vast enough to cover the sky and block out the sun. 27
- His bird form has long black feathers that give off a cold, chilling sheen. 31
- He can reveal himself as a gigantic Kun for underwater combat. 232
- His usual humanoid appearance has been described as a gloomy middle-aged man, a bird-headed humanoid Daoist, a black-robed Daoist, and a lean old human man used as a disguise. 26 156 192 253
Personality
Kunpeng is proud, independent, and highly conscious of his own dignity. He rejected Di Jun's prestigious offer rather than be drawn into a dangerous power struggle, and initially resented being treated as Nuwa's mount. 27 30 His fear of the Monster-Recruiting Banner was rooted in a refusal to lose his autonomy, prompting his brief rebellion at Fengqi Mountain. 31
He is also pragmatic. After witnessing Shen Hongfei's power and considering the protection, cultivation, and resources available at Fengqi Mountain, he voluntarily submitted and became increasingly devoted to Nuwa and Shen Hongfei. 32 By the time Nuwa became a Saint, he openly regarded his status as her mount as an honor. 129
Kunpeng can be arrogant after gaining power, especially when his speed gives him confidence against opponents of the same realm. This overconfidence leads him into the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation despite Shen Hongfei's warning. 236 237 Nevertheless, he is capable of restraint and strategy, such as refusing to intervene directly in Yang Jian's fight to avoid unnecessary karma. 252
Abilities & Skills
Extreme Speed
Kunpeng's defining ability is his extraordinary flight speed, which makes him a premier mount, scout, courier, and escape artist.
- Carries Nuwa's party from the Northern Darkness Sea across thousands of miles in moments. 28
- Leaves cultivators traveling toward Zixiao Palace unable to even see his shadow. 84
- Outruns Western Sect disciples before they can identify him. 215
- Reaches a speed described as comparable to that of a Saint after attaining peak Quasi-Saint cultivation. 235
- Uses this speed to capture Lü Yue and return within half an hour. 200
- His mobility can be neutralized by powerful formations; the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation leaves him with no route of escape. 237
Transformation and True Form
Kunpeng can shift between humanoid, bird, and Kun forms.
- Assumes a humanoid form to speak with Di Jun and other cultivators. 26
- Uses his vast bird form to transport Nuwa, Shen Hongfei, Shen Lingyue, and other passengers. 28 248
- Reveals a colossal Kun form to battle the Giant Flood Dragon underwater. 232
- Can disguise himself as an ordinary human to avoid notice in the Human Race. 253
Quasi-Saint Combat Power
Kunpeng is an exceptionally dangerous combatant even among Quasi-Saints.
- Uses a palace treasure to meet Taiyi's Eastern Emperor Bell during the battle in the Northern Darkness Sea. 27
- Wounds the White Giant Ape despite its unusually durable flesh and bones. 216
- Breaks through the Western Sect's Bodhi Great Array and rescues Kong Xuan. 220 221
- Joins Yuan Hong in killing Hong Shanjun during the defense of Kunlun Mountain. 224
- In true form, is assessed as capable of defeating three to five cultivators of the same realm. 232
- His claws are as tough as Innate Spiritual Treasures, though the Four Immortal Slaying Swords can cut them open. 237
Tactical Judgment
Kunpeng is politically perceptive and increasingly adept at acting in his allies' interests.
- Rejects Di Jun's invitation after recognizing that the Demon Clan's expansion would draw opposition from other great powers. 27
- Snatches the Luo Shu on Shen Hongfei's order, helping the dragons escape Di Jun's River Diagram and Luo Shu. 56
- Helps Shen Hongfei recruit Yang Jian by guiding him to the Three-Pointed, Double-Edged Spear and securing his family's safety in the Wa Empress Palace. 251 253
- Avoids directly defeating Jing Mu'an and Kui Mulang because doing so would entangle him in their karma. 252
