Background / History

Fang Mu awakens with a head injury and discovers that he has transmigrated into a demon-ravaged world. Assigned to the Demon Slayer Division, he kills a fish demon, obtains the Demon Refining Mirror and refining materials, and immediately begins using his earnings to build goodwill among constables and Demon Slayer Envoys. His generosity is calculated: he hopes favors and familiarity will deter others from targeting him. 1

After consuming the Black Pupil Pill, Fang Mu gains dark vision, qi perception, and the ability to perceive Demonic Energy, though the transformation initially blinds him. He later discovers that his pupils can absorb Demonic Energy, but early attempts worsen his vision. 2 3

Fang Mu’s priorities center on protecting his sick younger sister, Fang Jing. When three men harass her in the slums, he kills them in anger despite the legal risk. He subsequently gives Fang Jing refined pills to restore her health and encourages her to begin cultivating. 3 5 21

His first major gains come from the Mortal Prison. He acquires a Demon Core, becomes Wen Xuan’s exclusive Demon Slayer Envoy, and steadily develops through refining demons into pills, weapons, and techniques. The death of Zhao Li and Zhao Li’s wife deeply affects him; believing them dead, Fang Mu promises to find their lost daughter and becomes increasingly determined to gain enough strength to protect Fang Jing. A later reveal shows that Zhao Li and his wife had faked their deaths while pursuing their own objective. 4 5 7

After refining a Great Demon, Fang Mu obtains Outer Avatar Pills and creates a duplicate body. He keeps the avatar’s cultivation secret, using it as both a combat partner and a safeguard for Fang Jing. 7 8 18

Fang Mu’s conflict with Tu Qing escalates as Tu Qing repeatedly forces dangerous demon-slaying assignments on him, threatens Fang Jing, and attempts to use him as expendable bait. Fang Mu deliberately preserves an appearance of weakness while using the constant assignments to refine more demons and strengthen himself. He eventually kills Tu Qing during an expedition outside the city and destroys the evidence by refining the bodies. 11 16 37

He becomes involved in Qingzhu City’s political and supernatural conflicts through Qi Zhu’s search for her mother, the Sacrificial God. Fang Mu secretly steals power of faith from divine statues, investigates a cave containing a woman resembling Qi Zhu, and discovers that powerful figures are operating behind the city’s religious institutions. 23 29 30

After gaining responsibility for Earth Prison, Fang Mu kills and refines imprisoned demons while hiding the Chief Envoy’s absence from Huihai. He defeats Huihai’s soul entity through cooperation with his clone, then enters a precarious temporary alliance with him after Huihai becomes wary of Fang Mu’s Golden Zen Staff. 33 44 45

Chief Envoy Ye Tian later promotes Fang Mu to Deputy Chief Envoy and grants him the key to Heaven Prison. Ye Tian also entrusts Qi Zhu’s future to him after explaining that her Half-Demon lineage threatens her lifespan. 49

Appearance

Fang Mu is a young, conventionally handsome man; his appearance is specifically considered suitable for use as bait against a fox demon that preys on handsome men. 8

Personality

Fang Mu is pragmatic, cautious, and highly secretive. He hides his abnormal physical strength, keeps refined rewards within the Demon Refining Mirror’s storage space, and often pretends to be exhausted or weak so that enemies will underestimate him. 5 12 16

He is protective of Fang Jing to an extreme degree and repeatedly accepts danger rather than leave her vulnerable. Threats against her are the quickest way to provoke his anger, as seen in his killings of the slum harassers and his eventual murder of Tu Qing. 3 16 37

Despite his profession, Fang Mu does not believe every demon deserves death. Zhao Li’s wife’s final advice—that people and demons can each be good or evil—shapes his outlook, and Hu Mei’er’s actions reinforce his conviction that demons should be judged by their conduct rather than race alone. 7 9

He is ruthless toward those who endanger him or his family, but he does not kill solely for profit. He specifically frames the deaths of Jiang Tao and his associates as retribution for their crimes and for the women they harmed. 26 27
