A contingent of Highborne mages marched across the wilderness of Azsuna alongside the main forces of Lordaeron's War Court. Their final destination was the ruined city of Faronar, where a group of spectral Night Elves still lived, calling themselves the Court of Farondis.
During the War of the Ancients ten thousand years ago, Azsuna had also suffered an invasion by the Burning Legion's demonic army. Faronar had served as part of Suramar City's outer defenses. The Highborne there fought a brutal tug-of-war against the demons, but the city ultimately fell.
After The Great Sundering, Suramar City rose into the sky and left the region forever, leaving behind only that enormous crater.
Because the Highborne had collectively betrayed her, and because Queen Azshara did not know Titan Sarodar had already arrived, she cast a curse upon all of Faronar on the eve of the Sundering. Those Highborne's bodies turned to ash, leaving only their souls to continue existing in this world.
Prince Farondis was the leader of those spectral elves and had always been the lord of Azsuna. He had been searching for a way to lift the Spectral Curse, but the incursions of the Nightfallen from the Suramar crater had severely hindered that research.
Now, they began seeking the outsiders' help against the Nightfallen constantly harassing them, as well as the ever-growing numbers of Deep Sea Naga.
The Nightfallen were Highborne who had been scattered around greater Suramar back then and had failed to escape or seek refuge in time. They lost the Nightwell's supply of magic and received no replenishment from Titan's divine power, so after The Great Sundering, they cobbled together a crude imitation Nightwell.
