Background / History
Origins at the Well of Eternity
A troll tribe settled beside the Well of Eternity and gradually mutated under its influence. Their fangs vanished, their feet became more human-like, their skin turned light purple, and their features grew refined; they abandoned their former identity and named themselves the Night Elves. 4
Their society rapidly diverged from troll culture. They developed ornate architecture, founded a state, and raised Eldorei around Queen Azshara’s palace beside the Well. Some elves further developed into the Arcane-focused Highborne, marked by condensed rune tattoos and distinct cultural traditions. 4
The Ancient Empire
Centered on the Well of Eternity, the Night Elf Empire expanded throughout Kalimdor. Their mastery of Arcane power, refined culture, and relationship with the Dragon Aspects fostered an intense sense of superiority; they called themselves the Central Race. 6
The Dragon Aspects regarded the Night Elves as favored children of the gods and largely chose to deal with them over other mortal races. 6
Faith and the War of the Ancients
Sarodar’s intervention at the race’s dawn created a lasting religious divide. The Highborne became the first followers of the Eye of Truth, while the Temple of the Moon upheld devotion to Elune; Druids followed Cenarius and promoted preservation of nature. 5
Following the War of the Ancients, Dath'Remar and his court mages chose exile, while Suramar’s Highborne remained accepted as fellow Night Elves because they had fought with the resistance coalition. 32
The surviving leadership adopted a council system. Malfurion, Tyrande, Jarod Shadowsong, and Elisande formed the Night Council, while Sarodar remained a nominal retired emperor who intervened only in world-altering affairs. 32
Reconstruction and Expansion
After the war, Darnassus was built atop Teldrassil, while Suramar continued as a floating Arcane city. Roughly sixty percent of the population settled around Teldrassil; other Night Elves colonized Darkshore, Ashenvale, and Felwood. 34
Their subsequent expansion placed nearly half of Kalimdor under Night Elf control. The Night Elf Great Wall divided the continent from the Barrens to Feralas, and forests, fortifications, and internal defenses gave their territory exceptional strategic depth. 66
Rise of the Night Empire
A comprehensive purge by the Holy Crusaders reshaped elven society. Faith in Sarodar intensified across factions, while the formerly reclusive population became increasingly interested in military affairs, territorial expansion, and participation in global events. 225
The Night Elves formally transitioned to an imperial system, with Sarodar enthroned as the Eternal Night God-Emperor. The Holy Crusaders, Border Guard, Moonwing Ranger Corps, and Priestesses of the Moon publicly swore allegiance during the ascension ceremony. 234 241
Refugees from a parallel timeline—survivors of Teldrassil’s burning—later entered the empire in large numbers. Their arrival restored the Night Elves as the empire’s dominant population and produced the revenge-driven Night Warrior faction under the alternate Tyrande Whisperwind. 459 619
Appearance
Night Elves are lean, refined humanoids with light-purple skin and eyes that shimmer with magical energy. Their appearance originated through the Well of Eternity’s transformation of their troll ancestors. 4
- Slightly shorter than their troll forebears, without the latter’s long fangs or large feet. 4
- Smooth hair; early Night Elf women are noted for waist-length, pure-white hair. 4
- Smooth light-purple skin with a faint hazy glow. 4
- Fine facial features and energy-bright eyes. 4
- Highborne commonly bear Arcane rune tattoos condensed onto their bodies. 4
Personality
Night Elf society has long combined artistic refinement with racial pride. Their early empire viewed itself as Azeroth’s central civilization, and even ordinary Night Elf society placed high importance on pure bloodlines and lineage. 6 336
This mindset differs across factions. Druids and Priestesses of the Moon favor nature, spiritual guidance, and comparatively simple living, whereas Highborne culture centers on Arcane magic, luxury, banquets, and Suramar’s elaborate urban life. 35 77
Under Sarodar’s influence and the later imperial reforms, the race became more assertive and militant. Outside observers describe modern Night Elves as fervent and far more formidable than the calm, hesitant people remembered from the War of the Ancients. 225 544
Society and Faith
Eye of Truth
The Eye of Truth began with Highborne mages after Sarodar’s first divine manifestation. Its followers revere Sarodar as the God of Magic and later as the Eternal Night God-Emperor. 5 241
Sarodar’s spiritual awakening transformed the energy of his followers into dark-golden Dawn power and manifested an Eye of Truth rune on the back of their right hands. 215
Temple of the Moon
The Temple of the Moon worships Elune and serves as a source of spiritual guidance and local defense through its priestesses and Sentinels. Priestesses are generally respected across Night Elf society, including by the Highborne. 5 35
Druids
Night Elf Druids follow Cenarius, preserve natural lands, and maintain sacred centers at Mount Hyjal and Moonlight Grove. 5 35
The Druids later divided between orthodox adherents and Dawn Druids loyal to Sarodar’s imperial order. 235
Highborne
The Highborne are the Night Elves’ Arcane elite. Their culture is concentrated in Suramar, where magical scholarship, aristocratic manners, commercial activity, and lavish banquets distinguish them from mainstream Night Elf society. 4 77
- They preserve and teach magical systems originating from the era of the Well of Eternity. 101
- They influenced Stormwind’s nobility, who imitated their fashion, mannerisms, and supposed “ancient elven noble etiquette.” 172
- Their pride extends to altered elven kin: they accepted the spirit-form Farondis court and reluctantly agreed to resettle sane Nightfallen, but issued an Imperial Extermination Order against the spider-like Void Elves. 984
