Background / History

Founding and rise

General Lothar named his fertile northern territory Lordaeron. Trade caravans between Quel'Thalas and human lands began using it as a transit and rest point, creating rapid commercial growth and leading to the construction of Lordaeron City. 54

Lordaeron's prosperity was tied to its relationship with Quel'Thalas. It controlled trade in elven luxuries, enchanted goods, and armaments, while its rulers upheld the human–High Elf alliance inherited from the declining Arathor Empire. 54 67

Following Arathor's fragmentation, Lordaeron became the strongest of the seven human kingdoms. Its large cavalry and infantry legions, economic wealth, and High Elf support made it the foremost northern land power. 67

Era of Menethil expansionism

The Menethil royal family sought to recreate the unified Arathor Empire. This ambition made Lordaeron increasingly aggressive toward its neighbors, particularly Alterac and Gilneas; the two kingdoms allied to prevent being defeated separately. 71

The Holy Light emerged in Lordaeron and became mainstream among humans. Its priests reduced battlefield casualties through healing, and Archbishop Alonsus Faol later developed the first Paladins, including Uther, Tirion Fordring, and Turalyon. 71 136

During the Orc War, Lordaeron and Gilneas used Steel Stars against the Horde in Hillsbrad Foothills, supplied through Kul Tiras. 158 Lordaeron initially refused to join Stormwind's Southern Alliance as an ordinary member state, believing it should lead humanity rather than follow Stormwind. 116 136

Northern Alliance and the Alterac conflict

After the Orc War, King Terenas led Lordaeron in forming the Northern Alliance with Gilneas, Dalaran, Alterac, and Kul Tiras. The alliance was intended to counter Stormwind's Southern Alliance, while Stromgarde remained neutral. 180 181

Terenas attempted to annex Alterac through an arranged marriage between Princess Cariath and Lord Daval Prestor. Lordaeron supplied Prestor with gold, resources, diplomats, spies, and scouts to secure his succession. 160

Prestor became King of Alterac, renounced the arrangement, cancelled his marriage to Cariath, and resisted Lordaeron's annexation. Lordaeron eventually conquered Alterac, but inherited devastated cities, burned fields, refugees, and reconstruction costs rather than immediate gains. 195 207

Fall of Lordaeron

The Scourge devastated Lordaeron. Stratholme became a ruined wasteland, the surrounding lands became the Eastern Plaguelands, and the plague spread westward toward Tirisfal Glades. 247

Prince Arthas, controlled by Frostmourne, led the undead on the Lich King's orders. The kingdom collapsed after Arthas brought the Scourge into Lordaeron and killed King Terenas. 258 321

The Forsaken later controlled nearly all former Lordaeron territory except the Eastern and Western Plaguelands. 317

Lordaeron Restoration Army

Princess Cariath Menethil, the last surviving Menethil descendant, escaped with loyal royal guards and established the Lordaeron Restoration Army on Fenris Isle. After killing a guard captain who intended to use her as a figurehead, she publicly declared that Lordaeron had not fallen. 321

Cariath's forces expanded into the Alterac Mountains, occupied the Shattered Peaks, and rebuilt military towns as the foundation for a restored kingdom. 343 The Restoration Army later declared Fenris Isle and its occupied Alterac territories to be Lordaeron's ancestral lands, formally dissolving Alterac and classifying its remaining nobles and warlords as rebels. 357

The Restoration Army allied with Stromgarde's Restoration Army as the Northern Restoration Alliance. The Alliance, Scarlet Crusade, Silver Dawn, and Dawn Brotherhood all recognized Cariath's claim to former Alterac territory. 323 358

Restoration of the kingdom

After Undercity's destruction and the Forsaken withdrawal to Northrend, the Night Empire occupied and sealed Tirisfal Glades. Cariath personally negotiated for the return of Lordaeron's core homeland. 599 600

The Night Empire agreed to transfer Tirisfal Glades to the Restoration Army. Cariath accepted the terms and returned to prepare the restoration ceremony. 653

Cariath announced Lordaeron's formal restoration, proclaimed its Restoration Army-held territories to be its inherent lands, and was crowned Queen Cariath, the Dawn's Light of the North, the Eternal Chosen. Lordaeron also formally annexed the former Alterac Kingdom. 656

Government and Society

Menethil monarchy

Lordaeron is ruled by the Menethil royal court. Its political culture emphasizes hereditary legitimacy, traditional aristocracy, Arathor-era customs, and the belief that only the Menethil family has the right to rule Lordaeron. 728 802

Queen Cariath differs from King Terenas in foreign policy. Her leadership is viewed as less openly expansionist, allowing Stromgarde to trust Lordaeron as an ally rather than fear annexation. 728

Undead integration

Returning Forsaken nobles led by the Agamand family were permitted to reclaim their estates and rejoin Lordaeron after pledging loyalty to Queen Cariath. They were required to live among the living, abandon separate Forsaken practices, and avoid forming undead-only enclaves. 656

Undead nobles and Wailing Banshees participate in Lordaeron's court and governance while maintaining the habits, status consciousness, and aristocratic style of the old northern nobility. 656 728

Undead nobles also serve as a major defensive force around the royal court, including Forsaken Death Knights and high-ranking Banshees loyal to the Menethil monarchy. 802

Faith

The Holy Light remains central to Lordaeron's identity. The rebuilt Holy Light Cathedral is led by the undead Archbishop Alonsus Faol, demonstrating that undead believers are accepted within the faith. 810

Cariath herself became a Dawn Knight, and Dawn Knights became influential within the Lordaeron Restoration Army, though Paladin organizations such as the Silver Dawn retain close historical ties to the kingdom. 323 392
