Background / History
Ancient injury and dormant influence
Azeroth was discovered by the Pantheon while still unborn and already infected by several Old Gods. During the War of the Ancients, Aman'Thul forcibly extracted Y'Shaarj from her interior. The act killed the Old God but tore a grievous wound through the planet, injured Azeroth in her core, delayed her awakening, and created the Well of Eternity from her spilled divine blood. The Pantheon sealed the remaining Old Gods and departed after stabilizing the damage. 3
While dormant, Azeroth instinctively influenced her world. Her power was projected through her two moons to answer the prayers of the Priestesses of the Moon, giving rise to the name Elune. She also unconsciously created Wild Demigods such as Malorne and Cenarius. 5
Contact with Sarodar
Sarodar first detected Azeroth as another unhatched World Soul in a concealed, tranquil star system. Her planet was then largely oceanic, with one circular continent and two moons. Drawn by her friendly psychic presence and needing an ally against Sargeras and the Void Lords, Sarodar positioned his own planet near hers and began cultivating a connection with her. 2
Sarodar later arranged for divine power to be transferred into Azeroth's core, helping her recover from the damage caused by Y'Shaarj's extraction. 177 As her awareness developed, she began confronting him directly over his treatment of her planet and resources. 241 293
Awakening and hatching
Once awake, Azeroth viewed the Pantheon as responsible for her suffering and regarded Sargeras as another enemy, though a lesser one in comparison. Her distrust of the old Pantheon was strongly shaped by her bond with Sarodar. 623
Her recovery culminated in the Transcendent Twins bond with Sarodar. As her core expelled accumulated corrupted blood, that blood surfaced as new Azerite veins, vastly increasing the world's supply of the resource. 834
Azeroth eventually used vast quantities of Planet God Iron to form her divine body without destroying her planetary shell. She hatched outside her orbit as Elune, resisted the absolute Order inherent to Titans with Sarodar's support, and chose to retain her own preferences and free will. Her hatching was commemorated across Azeroth as Birth Day. 974 975
Appearance
Before hatching, Azeroth could manifest as a hazy silver-white mass of energy or a slender humanoid figure whose features remained indistinct. 293 After hatching, she possessed a fully physical Titan form outside Azeroth's orbit. 974
- Waist-length silvery-white hair. 974
- Star-filled eyes set against a moonlit backdrop. 974
- An elegant silvery-white long dress rather than Titan heavy armor. 355 974
- A humanoid appearance likened to elves and humans, though no single mortal race fully defines her form. 974
- Moonlight around the world reflects her personal attitude: welcoming in favored places and absent in locations she dislikes. 974
Personality
Azeroth's earliest psychic presence was gentle, pure, orderly, friendly, and joyful, despite her lack of conscious awareness. 2 After developing an essence avatar, she proved curious, blunt, easily annoyed, and willing to call Sarodar a scoundrel over his actions. 293
Her formative trauma left her deeply resentful of the Pantheon, Aman'Thul, and Sargeras. 623 However, she refuses to become a mindless agent of absolute Order: at her hatching, she consciously chose individuality and the freedom to act on her own preferences. 974 975
Azeroth recognizes the efforts of those who defended her world. Upon hatching, she thanked Azeroth's warriors and resolved to use their strength and weapons to avenge those who had harmed both her and Sarodar. 974
Abilities & Skills
World-Soul Influence
Azeroth's power operates through her planetary body, core, moons, and native life.
- Unhatched World Souls can sense one another at close range; this instinct disappears after birth. 2
- Her divine blood formed the Well of Eternity after Y'Shaarj's extraction. 3
- Her unconscious will created or shaped Wild Demigods, including Malorne and Cenarius. 5
- She projected power through her moons to empower the Priestesses of the Moon. 5
- Her severe ancient wound forced much of her divine power into recovery, greatly slowing her hatching. 651
Transcendent Twins Bond
Azeroth shares an exceptional reciprocal connection with Sarodar.
- Either twin can draw upon the other's divine power and specialized abilities. 834
- They can share life force, damage, knowledge, and divine power. 834
- Azeroth can effectively support Sarodar remotely by healing herself, with the shared-life bond restoring him as well. 834
- The bond and Sarodar's Dawn Divine Power helped her resist the mental influence of absolute Order during her hatching. 974
Azerite Generation
As her injuries healed, Azeroth expelled corrupted and waste blood from her core into deposits across the planet.
- These deposits became Azerite veins on the surface and beneath it. 834
- The resulting increase in Azerite reserves expanded production of Azerite war machines and the Heart of Azeroth. 834
- Azerite is regarded by Azeroth's inhabitants as a gift of the mother planet, though excessive extraction risks depleting her divine blood. 383 834
Lunar and Titan Authority
After hatching, Azeroth could exert more deliberate influence over her world.
- Her approaching hatching transformed the Priestesses of the Moon into the Sisters of the Moon, a devoted organization marked by lunar power. 974
- Her moonlight can vary in intensity or vanish entirely according to her preferences. 974
- She blocked the Old Gods' external mental signals, isolating N'Zoth's faction within Azeroth. 980
Manifested Will
Azeroth's resentment and will manifested as the greatsword Azeroth's Vengeance.
- Sarodar used the blade against C'Thun and the Twin Emperors of the Ahn'Qiraj Empire. 442 446
- The weapon was later integrated into Sarodar's Titan form and nourished with his divine power. 651
