Howard was already a leading scientist in his world before meeting Josh. A materialist skeptic, he regarded magic as incompatible with science until Josh placed him in an independent space and manifested a vast nebula through magic. The demonstration leaves him shaken but fascinated rather than dismissive. 60

Josh recruits Howard to help modernize his underdeveloped territory, chiefly because Howard combines wealth, scientific talent, and access to production equipment. Josh also openly admits that Howard's future son, Tony Stark, is part of his calculation.
