Background / History

Garen is a Demacian noble-born warrior and one of Demacia's Three Musketeers. While investigating the strange silver Void phenomenon near Icathia and searching for his scattered soldiers, he encountered Josh, whose silver Void Magic led Garen to mistake him for a Void creature. Garen attacked immediately, believing the apparent threat had to be eliminated. 4

Despite Josh's lower apparent level, the battle became dangerous when Josh's Void Gate collided with Garen's greatsword. The resulting explosion left Garen severely injured and carried him to the Muya Continent. Josh initially imprisoned him, but arranged treatment for his wounds rather than killing him. 5 10

Once recovered, Garen discovered he was in another universe and could not communicate with the locals. Josh used mental communication and later a Memory Magic Crystal to explain Muya's language, customs, and the circumstances of Garen's displacement. Garen accepted Josh's offer to travel together because it provided his only plausible chance of returning to Valoran. 11 12 13

Josh's explanation that power itself was neither good nor evil caused Garen to reconsider his lifelong hostility toward magic—especially in light of Lux, his mage sister. 13

Appearance

Garen is a tall, imposing warrior with a firm, rugged face and a heavily built physique. He is typically seen in heavy Demacian armor and carries a greatsword. 3 5

  • Tall and physically imposing. 3
  • Wears heavy plate armor designed to resist magic. 11
  • Carries and fights with a greatsword, which he can wield one-handed. 4
  • Has a stern, soldierly bearing, though his demeanor becomes more relaxed around Josh over time. 27

Personality

Garen is direct, brave, and deeply action-oriented. He dislikes excessive caution in the face of an enemy and favors confronting threats openly and decisively. At Hogwarts, he openly criticized plans based on waiting for Voldemort's return, arguing that students should be taught properly and enemies should be dealt with directly. 29

His initial prejudice against magic comes from Demacian values and personal experience, but it is not absolute. He recognizes the kindness of his sister Lux despite her magic, accepts healing from mages, and gradually becomes willing to learn and teach cultivation methods himself. 11 13 142

Though Josh often calls him a brute, Garen is observant and tactically capable. During their first battle, he recognized Josh's poor magic control and switched to feints designed to exhaust Josh's mana rather than attempting reckless exchanges. 4

His time with Josh also makes him more teasing and mischievous. He learns to enjoy unusual events, jokes at Josh's expense, and considers founding a League of Legends club after discovering the game exists in another world. 58 116

Abilities & Skills

Battle Qi Cultivation

Garen combines a powerful trained body with Battle Qi cultivation. He views both as necessary: the body is the vessel that determines how much power one can hold, while Battle Qi strengthens combat ability and nourishes life force. 76 142

  • Uses Battle Qi to enhance physical strength, weapon strikes, defense, and control. 26
  • Battle Qi cultivation extends vitality and can restore physical condition; Garen also teaches its principles to others. 18 142 150
  • His progress is considered genius-level, particularly because advancement beyond Third Tier becomes increasingly difficult. 203

Greatsword Combat

Garen is an experienced battlefield fighter with extensive experience against mages. His physical strength, timing, and tactical sense allow him to pressure opponents even when their supernatural abilities are dangerous. 4 22

  • Defeated Josh in early sparring despite Josh's magical advantages. 26
  • Killed a nearly adult Tree Peak Dragon with a single punch. 41
  • Easily defeated a 25-foot Horntail dragon. 40
  • Cut through a Goblin army with Battle Qi-infused sword energy. 291

Demacian Justice

Demacian Justice is a Battle Qi technique developed from the game-based concept Josh remembered, refined by Akathosh, and taught to Garen. 292

  • Single-target form — compresses Battle Qi into an instantaneous burst intended to execute a target. 292
  • Area form — disperses Battle Qi into numerous high-powered sword-energy attacks over a wide area. 292
  • Its first field use caused a mountain collapse after Garen released excessive Battle Qi, nearly burying his companions. 292

Command and Conquest

Garen develops from a frontline soldier into a large-scale commander. Josh sends him to the Ice and Fire world specifically to gain experience in troop leadership, warfare, and political rule. 434

  • Builds and commands a powerful army with Tony's assistance. 536
  • Establishes territory as a base of operations before forcibly unifying the continent. 536
  • Helps establish the Secret Ones Church to stabilize the conquered territory through faith. 536

Rule-Based Power

After receiving rule power from Josh, Garen senses abstract “lines” through which he can gather immense force. 537

  • Potentially grants a transformative increase in power. 537
  • Cannot be safely tested on Muya, where deities may notice and pursue such power. 537
  • Garen intends to study and master it in other worlds. 537

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Greatsword — Garen's primary weapon, used for direct strikes and Battle Qi sword energy. 4 291
  • Magic-resistant heavy plate armor — protected him during his first battle with Josh, though its chest plate was damaged by the Void Gate explosion. 11
  • Space Bag — stores his broadsword and equipment. 291
  • Memory Magic Crystal — given by Josh to provide Muya's language, customs, and other knowledge. 12 13

Relationships

  • Josh Augustus — Former enemy turned closest companion and friend. Garen initially attacked Josh as a suspected Void creature, but later travels with him in hopes of returning home. 4 12 536
  • Lux — Garen's younger sister and a mage. His love for her is a major reason he reconsiders his views on magic. 11 13
  • FrankJosh's steward and the mage involved in Garen's treatment. Frank recognizes Garen's military knowledge and moral character. 11 14
  • Dumbledore — Hogwarts ally who recognizes Garen's immense physical strength; Garen temporarily helps cover Josh's classes. 73
  • Elrond — Sparring mentor whose agility and deeper combat experience expose weaknesses in Garen's fighting style. 193
  • Tony — Co-commander during the conquest of the Ice and Fire world; Tony handles civilian matters while Garen leads the military campaign. 536
  • Natasha — Fellow companion whom Garen has taught sword fighting. 80
