Background / History
Rivalry and ancestral sacrifices
The Chuan Family initially sought to extend its ancestor's lifespan through an ancestral rite, then challenge the Tie Family for second place in Zi City. Its ambitions eventually reached further: Chuan Jia expected a successful breakthrough by the ancestor to let the family take control of the City Lord Mansion 2 34.
The family assigned Zhang Qing, a human bonded guard, a human wife. Once she became pregnant, he was intended to become an offering for the ancestral rites. Cultivation offered him a way to gain value within the family and improve his position 2.
Recruitment of Zhang Qing
Zhang Qing's rapid mastery of cultivation techniques attracted Chuan Jia's attention. The elder ordered an investigation into his background and arranged medicinal ingredients for his training. After Zhang Qing entered First-grade Hall, the family refused Yu An's request to buy his indenture contract 15 16.
Chuan Jia subsequently offered him outer-clan membership, spirit pills, and assistance in entering Ghoul Blood Hall. His assignment was to join the hall and become a squad leader within one month. Privately, Chuan Jia hoped to use him against Grace Yang after five earlier agents had been “played to death” by her 24.
When Zhang Qing reported that he had joined Ghoul Blood Hall, Chuan Jia awarded him daily gold and spirit pills. The family allowed him to live outside Chuan Prefecture, though collecting his subsidy required reporting in person 27.
Specter dealings and the Blood Transformation Pill
The Chuan Family raised Specters and sold ghoul blood to the Shui Family. When the volume of those purchases aroused its suspicions, the Shui Family exposed the Chuan Family's Specter-raising activities rather than share its Ghoul Blood Warrior research 59.
The family also captured a special Specter important enough to draw the Insect Spirit Ghoul into an alliance with the Yu and Tie Families. Zhang Qing later suspected that this captive had been the Silkworm Ghoul, but the identification was not confirmed 36 85.
To obtain a Blood Transformation Pill for its ancestor, Chuan Fu purchased the Pagoda Tree Ghoul's heartblood for 1,000 gold. Zhang Qing delivered it and a Ghoul Blood Flower to Grace Yang, who refined the pill; he then consumed it himself. Meanwhile, Chuan Jia believed he had reconstructed the formula and began testing it 33 34.
Destruction during the ancestral rite
The family prepared an unusually lavish rite, buying supplies throughout Zi City and hiring laborers to construct an altar dozens of meters high. The Yu and Tie Families arranged to draw out its ancestor and attack him alongside the Insect Spirit Ghoul 34.
During the battle, Chuan Kuangxue's maximum Blood Volume briefly exceeded 6,000 before dropping back below that threshold. Grace Yang stated that his age prevented a genuine breakthrough beyond the Morning Sun Realm. His visible Blood Volume eventually disappeared, and observers believed him dead 35 36.
Specters attacked Chuan Prefecture while First-grade Hall resisted. Razor's arrival overwhelmed the defenders, and the family's warriors were killed. Non-warrior members, including Chuan Hao, were driven out rather than completely exterminated; the destruction took almost a single night 36 37.
Afterward, the Yu and Tie Families searched Zi City for remnants. People connected to the Chuan Family—not only those bearing its surname—could be targeted for extortion. Records seized from its estate also helped the Yu Family investigate the Shui Family's Ghoul Blood Warrior project 38 39 59.
The ancestor's survival and final betrayal
Chuan Kuangxue later reappeared alive. He explained that a blood spring cultivated over twenty years had saved his life, and he was cooperating with the other ancestors to force progress toward Heavenly Demon power 104.
The family's destruction had also been part of a scheme involving its own ancestor. Chuan Hao was guided toward a revenge-based Sequence pathway, only for that pathway to collapse when Chuan Kuangxue's survival and participation were revealed. The ancestor told him that he had fulfilled his purpose by providing the knowledge they wanted; Chuan Hao then lost his power and died 118 119.
Zhang Qing later attacked Chuan Kuangxue using an evolved version of the family's own secret art. Zhang Qing and Grace Yang killed him together 124 125.
Organization and Membership
| Division / Position | Function |
|---|---|
| Ancestor | Chuan Kuangxue was the family's central military figure and the focus of its ancestral rites 2 35. |
| First-grade Hall | Recruited promising talent, assigned intelligence work, and formed a major defensive force during the assault. Chuan Jia was addressed as its Vice Hall Master 16 24 34 36. |
| Scripture Pavilion | Housed cultivation manuals. Elder family members normally guarded it as less strenuous work in old age 15. |
| Guard captains | Officers such as Chuan Fa and Chuan Qi managed guards and arranged replacements for Razor duty 5. |
| Outer clan | Recruited outsiders whose future children could bear the Chuan surname and establish a permanent branch line 24. |
- Cultivation and status: Chuan Fa began treating Zhang Qing as a potential peer after he became a Glimmering Realm warrior 14.
- Internal hierarchy: As a minor guard leader, Chuan Fa kept his head lowered before Chuan Chao of First-grade Hall 24.
- Non-cultivating descendants: Direct descent could still provide a comfortable life, but Chuan Hao was disparaged as “trash” for being unable to cultivate 60 119.
- Razor substitutions: Guard captains could receive replacement fees for supplying someone else to fill a dangerous duty slot 5.
Strength and Resources
- Chuan Kuangxue: A Morning Sun Realm ancestor who fought the Yu and Tie patriarchs and the Insect Spirit Ghoul simultaneously. His temporary rise above 6,000 maximum Blood Volume dramatically improved his performance 34 35 36.
- Chuan Jia: Had 3,600 Blood Volume and was identified as a Waning Moon Realm expert when Zhang Qing encountered him at the Scripture Pavilion 15.
- Elite descendants: The direct descendants and elites on the ancestral altar had four-digit Blood Volumes 35.
- Training supplies: The family provided selected recruits with Blood Ginseng, medicinal-bath ingredients, spirit pills, and monetary subsidies 10 15 24 27.
- Intelligence network: Zhang Qing was not its only agent inside Ghoul Blood Hall; another informant reported the appearance of a high-grade pill omen to Chuan Jia 34.
Cultivation Techniques and Secret Arts
Chuan Shattering Steps
- A movement technique unique to the Chuan Family, selected by Zhang Qing from its Scripture Pavilion 15.
- Zhang Qing evolved it beyond the original version through Attribute Points. Chuan Hao recognized that his execution surpassed the family's technique 42 65.
- Its developed form emphasized stability and fine control, allowing movement through crowded battles and incoming attacks 69.
Chuan Blood Spring
- The family's secret art refines blood to restore the user's health. Zhang Qing healed severe hand and abdominal wounds with it during combat 66 69.
- In Zhang Qing's early use, refining blood consumed maximum Blood Volume. He calculated a roughly 200% healing ratio, provided sufficient blood was available nearby 69 73.
- Chuan Kuangxue's twenty-year cultivated blood spring saved him from his apparent death 104.
- Chuan Hao and the Pagoda Tree Ghoul traded an incomplete copy to Zhang Qing, followed later by the full manual 66 76.
- After becoming a Sequence User, Zhang Qing gained control over Chuan Kuangxue's blood and surpassed the ancestor's mastery of the art 124.
- The inherited art ultimately absorbed Blood River authority, reached Ninth Grade, and evolved into the Extreme secret technique Blood Momentum 213.
Scripture Pavilion Manuals
| Technique | Documented purpose |
|---|---|
| Sky-Opening Slash | Forceful saber attacks with heavy stamina consumption; unsuitable for prolonged combat without sufficient endurance 15. |
| Ox-Barbarian Strength | Body-tempering training supported by medicinal ingredients supplied through Chuan Jia 15 16. |
- The lowest-grade cultivation technique could be exchanged for ten Silver Coins; Zhang Qing paid thirty Silver Coins when selecting three manuals 2 15.
- Manuals concealed their full contents until treated with special medicine, preventing visitors from memorizing large numbers without authorization 15.
