Background

Fahai was cultivating at Leifeng Pagoda of Jingshan Temple when he sensed a powerful demonic aura and pursued it. He cannot remember the intervening journey, but emerged in the Primordial World with vastly increased cultivation and an upgraded Purple Gold Alms Bowl. Initially believing he remained in the world of Legend of the White Snake, he mistook Sun Wukong and the Black Bear Spirit for local demons. 570 572

His simultaneous cultivation of Buddhism and Daoism is regarded as unprecedented in the Primordial World. Although he initially possessed only a fragment of the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, he advanced rapidly to Grand Unity Golden Immortal. 570 571

After realizing Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and the others were genuine figures of the Journey to the West era, Fahai released Wukong and the Black Bear Spirit and accepted his earlier mistake. He later followed Yang Jian to Wu Feng's General Store, becoming connected to Wu Feng's group. 578 590

Personality

Fahai is intensely justice-driven and uncompromising toward demons that harm mortals. He treats the destruction of evil as a monk's duty and generally rejects rehabilitation for malicious demons, believing their survival endangers innocent people. 757 789 822

Despite his severity, he is protective of civilians and companions. He sends Tang Sanzang away from the Ginseng Fruit Tree battle, risks losing all his cultivation to save Sun Wukong from Heavenly Flame injuries, and shelters Flame Mountain's residents from fire. 709 781 914

He does not blindly accept Buddhist authority or doctrine. Fahai remains committed to his identity as a monk, yet doubts Tathagata's teachings and judges Buddhism by whether it protects living beings in practice. 584 789 924

Abilities & Skills

Buddhist–Daoist Dual Cultivation

Fahai combines Buddhist and Daoist cultivation methods, a combination considered unprecedented in the Primordial World. 570

  • Reached Grand Unity Golden Immortal through fragmentary Mahayana teachings and an unexplained opportunity. 571 572
  • Uses Buddhist incantations alongside Daoist implements such as his Fly Whisk. 570 575
  • His Golden Body is notably stronger than that of Buddhist cultivators at a comparable level, though it was shattered by the Gathering Yin Banner's wielder. 989

Purple Gold Alms Bowl

The alms bowl became Tathagata Buddha's Purple Gold Alms Bowl during Fahai's unexplained journey. 572

  • Emits golden light that drains targets' magical power and can collect them into the bowl. 571
  • Subdued both the Black Bear Spirit and Sun Wukong; Wukong's Chaos Demon Ape Bloodline allowed him to resist longer, but not escape. 570 571
  • Dissolves the bodies and strips the strength of demons illuminated by it. 576
  • Can absorb incoming flames, but its capacity is limited against sustained Samadhi True Fire. 778 799

Kasaya

Fahai's Kasaya is a Spiritual Treasure used for containment, transport, and protection. 575 709

  • Expanded to seal the entire Lion Camel Kingdom, preventing its demons from escaping. 575 576
  • Carried Tang Sanzang away from the battle at Wuzhuang Temple toward the safety of the Heavenly Court. 709
  • Works alongside his combat techniques against high-level opponents. 709

Broken Temple Wooden Fish

A magical treasure obtained to strengthen Fahai for the Journey to the West calamities. 837 838

  • Strengthens his bones and Blood Essence, heightens battle intent, and blocks pain. 888
  • Continuously releases healing waves for Fahai and nearby allies. 888 890
  • Enhances his physical combat ability, allowing him to challenge stronger opponents. 837
  • Improves his footwork and mobility enough to evade Red Boy's Samadhi True Fire repeatedly. 889 911
  • Generated a large golden shield and healing waves to protect civilians from Flame Mountain's heat. 914

Demon-Sealing and Fire Suppression

Fahai employs restrictions, Buddhist seals, and spiritual treasures to contain destructive forces.

  • His restrictions significantly weakened Red Boy's Samadhi True Fire and protected Tang Sanzang's group, though Red Boy eventually broke them. 778
  • Sealed the fire on Hong Lian Ji's Soul Extinguishing Fork, sharply reducing her combat power. 779
  • The Ice Soul Clear Heart Bead can heal injuries from any of the nine great Heavenly Flames and can be used repeatedly. 781

Martial and Divine Techniques

Fahai supplements his spells with close-quarters combat and ranged divine arts.

  • Five-Clawed Golden Dragon — Annihilated thousands of weaker Lion Camel Kingdom demons in a single strike. 575
  • Fly Whisk — Enlarges to bind fleeing targets; successfully restrained the Golden-Winged Great Peng's claws across tens of thousands of miles before Yang Jian cut it apart. 577
  • Moon Gazing Finger / Vajra Finger — Fires golden finger energy; used against the Formless Realm fissure, the River God priest, and Xuanzi. 772 814 978
  • Vajra Demon Subduing Fist / Vajra Inch Force — A full-power strike injured Red Boy severely enough to fracture multiple bones in his back. 799 800
  • Vajra Image — Creates a massive Vajra Buddha image capable of deflecting Xuanzi's rapid dagger strikes. 978
  • Transformations — Assumes alternate forms for infiltration, including an eagle and a young girl. 795 812

  • Ice Soul Clear Heart Bead — Reusable treasure that heals Heavenly Flame injuries and makes its holder fearless of the nine great Heavenly Flames. 781

Relationships

  • Sun Wukong — Initially captured by Fahai as a “demon monkey,” but later becomes his confidant and sworn brother-like companion. Fahai sacrifices valuable cultivation methods to save him from Heavenly Flame injuries. 571 578 781
