After bidding farewell to the witches, Shade went to Spider Alley to meet up with Mr. Bernhardt. They then took a carriage together to the Crowley Steam Bathhouse at 18 Grev Street in the north of the city.
Since they had determined that the secret laboratory appearing in Herman Wood's memories obtained by Shade was most likely connected to the Steam Bathhouse, the two decided to set out from the bathhouse's secret passage and travel the entire route leading from the bathhouse to the exit by the Tatton River.
Thus, rather than entering the bathhouse as guests and taking off their clothes, they used illusions to conceal themselves and entered the damp interior fully clothed.
Though it was still open in the early morning, there were not many guests. The room that had been used before was currently empty. After feeling around the wall, Mr. Bernhardt lightly pressed a particular brick in the uneven gray brick wall used as decoration. At once, an opening large enough to climb down through appeared beside the cabinet in the corner of the room.
Shade stood there and looked down.
"I don't understand. After taking a bath, are they really not bothered by crawling through sewers like this?"
No matter how safe the chosen route was, sewers that had not seen sunlight for years could never be considered clean.
"Those people didn't come here to bathe. Compared to the profits from businesses that can't see the light of day, what does this matter? I looked into things a little over the past few days, and all I can say is that there really is a reason Moon Bay City's nobles are so wealthy."
Mr. Bernhardt clicked his tongue, but did not pursue the subject.
