Background / History
Bernhardt inherited his viscountcy after losing his parents early in life. His wife also died young, leaving him with few people he could fully trust. His family operates a major Kasonlik wine business and controls numerous vineyards. 694 833
In the autumn of 1853, his clan sent him to Middlesburg with a vessel intended for the God of Vampires and tasked him with collecting Relics connected to the god’s planned descent. Bernhardt knew little of the full scheme. During this assignment, he met Shade Hamilton and became involved in the Sin Mansion incident. 2051
He was later seriously wounded and captured after bringing a Bloodkin prince—disguised as his nephew—to Sikar Mountain. He was ransomed, had part of his memories of the incident erased, and left Shade a letter of gratitude and an invitation to his Kasonlik estate. 802 833
After returning to Huntington, Bernhardt assisted Shade with local investigations, introduced him to Bloodkin society, and used his standing among the city’s nobles and Bloodkin to provide support. He manages the royal White River Valley Vineyard, while his family’s workers handle its wine production. 851 852 868
During the Moon Bay crisis, he investigated suspicious Bloodkin, criminal networks, threatening letters, and the Dragon Devouring Order alongside Shade and Ptolemy Albert. Though local Bloodkin urged him to remain as a leader after the crisis, he declined and returned to Wilundell. 2307 2446 2504
In Arcadia City, Bernhardt was entrusted by his clan to command the search for missing Bloodkin kin. After advancing to Eighth Ring, he led a team of Advanced Bloodkin against Life Aberrations and the suspected Blood Spirit School network, while cautiously investigating a traitor within his own force. 3981 4018 4083
Appearance
Bernhardt usually presents himself as an elegant, well-dressed middle-aged nobleman, favoring formal clothing suitable for upper-class gatherings. His ordinary appearance is maintained through Bloodkin control over his blood. 655 868 2186
- Typically wears expensive formal suits, coats, and noble insignia; he prominently displays the Bernhardt family crest at important events. 868
- Is often seen with a black coat or black hat during investigations and travel. 851 3981
- Appears as a middle-aged Bloodkin with a small bat symbol visible to supernatural perception. 851
- In his combat form, his face becomes shriveled and dehydrated while his hands lengthen into claws. 2186 2449
Personality
Bernhardt is courteous, sociable, and strongly conscious of aristocratic dignity. He is capable of navigating noble society, local commerce, Bloodkin affairs, and criminal information networks without making his status the center of attention. 852 857 2358
Despite his refined demeanor, he is protective of those he considers his responsibility. He remained in Huntington when disaster was expected because his kin trusted him, and he later chose to confront Moon Bay’s crisis rather than flee it. 1091 2444
His experiences with Shade lead him to question what justice requires. Rather than accepting accusations at face value, Bernhardt resolves to investigate personally and distinguish right from wrong even when he lacks the power to correct every injustice. 2307 2308
He does not regard himself as a heroic leader and has little ambition to lead a Bloodkin revival. Nevertheless, he repeatedly accepts dangerous investigative duties when his kin or home are threatened. 2504 3981

The Ghost was described as a soul returned from the end of Death and cleansed of Sin. Shade chose to trap it rather than destroy it. Bernhardt himself later continued to appear and work alongside Shade. 2051 2069
