History
Decline in Qingzhou
The Yuanxiang Sect’s former strength rested heavily on Linghu Yan. At his height, his swordsmanship forced the sect’s two major rivals to submit. After an outing, however, he entered prolonged seclusion, leaving even his survival uncertain to those below him. Without its supreme martial protector, the sect’s centralized structure began to unravel 12 244.
Elders adopted cultivation methods that consumed disciples, while lower-ranking officials pursued private profit. Missing disciples became a public rumor, and talented members began leaving or accepting recruitment from outside powers despite punishments intended to deter desertion. Chiliu Sect exploited this decline to seize Yuanxiang industries and resources 12 86 166 171.
Reform Faction and Succession Preparations
Mo Zhen sought to use the impending Martial Alliance Meeting to break the existing sect structure, remove its corrupt foundations, and build a new Yuanxiang Sect. Qi Baorui joined his faction, and their investigations exposed Water Court Elder Zhou Shang’s secret defection to the authorities 7 12.
The leadership also prepared to preserve its inheritance through selected core disciples if the sect fell. Zhou Shang declared his intention to transfer Blood Essence to his direct disciple, while Xia Jingtian separately pursued advancement by harvesting his disciples’ cultivation 56 57.
Chen Duan entered the sect specifically to obtain the Hongyuan Five Elements Art. Although Qi Baorui warned him to leave, he refused. After killing Xia Jingtian, he remained outwardly an ordinary Wood Courtyard disciple while cooperating with Mo Zhen’s inner circle. Mo Zhen later assigned him and Water Courtyard Chief Disciple Ji Canghai to confront Zhou Shang, whose cultivation reportedly stood half a step into Apex 90 120 122 158.
Loss of the Qingzhou Mountain Gate
Chiliu Sect, Taihui Sect, and the government plotted to divide Yuanxiang’s territory. The government-backed Martial Alliance Meeting served as a test of the weakened sect, whose leadership was already considering how to retreat while preserving its foundations. Yuanxiang withdrew amid the meeting’s collapse 14 158 173 184.
Wei Zhentian subsequently led Chiliu Sect against the mountain gate. An outer disciple manager opened the entrance in exchange for a promised position in Chiliu, while Chiliu and government personnel guarded the prefectural city’s exits. Yuanxiang disciples resisted through prepared ambushes, traps, and hidden weapons, but suffered heavy casualties 20.
Linghu Yan, weakened by poison and near death, prepared his final Sword of Life Abandonment against Wei Zhentian. Qi Baorui and Mo Zhen led surviving disciples away, abandoning the mountain gate and leaving the prefecture. These survivors became the preserved “sparks” of the sect’s future revival 20 21 454.
Re-establishment in Shu Prefecture
The survivors established themselves in Shu Prefecture but remained outsiders competing with entrenched local powers. Qi Baorui sheltered Seal Ruler Sect members because of his friendship with Yun Tingqiu, despite the danger their presence posed to Yuanxiang 446 447 449.
When Chen Duan arrived with Yun Qingsu, the sect was under attack by Evil Spirits. He defeated a black-robed spirit controller, later subdued Linghu Yan, and captured Jade Purity Sect Elder Yu Jin as one of the attack’s masterminds. Mo Zhen publicly supported his succession, and Chen Duan became Sect Master 448 453 454.
His first council meeting established the new balance of power: Mo Zhen suppressed opposition, while Chen Duan killed an elder who proposed surrendering the Seal Ruler Sect remnants to appease the Three Sects, accusing him of accepting their money 454.
Conflict with the Three Sects
After three batches of Jade Purity Sect envoys were killed, its leadership moved against Yuanxiang. Chen Duan confronted the Three Sects and withstood Daoist Jade Stone’s attack, which threatened the disciples behind him. Yu Yuan then demanded that Yuanxiang leave Shu Prefecture permanently 473 475 476.
Chen Duan’s revelation of his Undying Heavenly Demon Body unsettled both Yuanxiang disciples and the sheltered Seal Ruler Sect members. Mo Zhen prevented the latter from fleeing, arguing that Chen Duan had not mistreated them and had protected them from their enemies 479 486.
The Three Sects subsequently sent apologies, compensation, and gifts of thanks. Their letters attributed the earlier persecution to Yu Jin’s personal collaboration with the Martial Supremacy Alliance and the demonic Daoist Yun Guangdao, rather than to the Three Sects collectively 488.
Spirit Gate Disaster and Consolidation
During Chen Duan’s seclusion, Spirit Gate fissures released Evil Spirits throughout Shu Prefecture. Yuanxiang’s grounds became ruins, but Mo Zhen evacuated the main body of disciples and returned to rescue those still trapped at the Water Court and Law Enforcement Hall 497 498.
Chen Duan returned and cleared the sect with Sage Cleanses the World, gathering survivors at the Wood Courtyard. He then recalled disciples and accepted refugees from the Seal Ruler Sect and the Three Teachings under his rules 498 499.
Yuanxiang became a formal member and principal foundation of the Righteous Path Alliance. Its elite disciples later carried out covert operations under Mo Zhen, and the sect recruited newcomers from Shu Prefecture’s former sects. Chen Duan nevertheless preserved Yuanxiang’s independent identity rather than merging it into the Myriad Extremes Sect 529 540 546 556.
Organization and Governance
Four Courts and One Sect Master
The traditional hierarchy is described as “Four Academies and One Sect Master.” Its divisions correspond to the Hongyuan Five Elements Art, with the Sect Master controlling its core Gold Element Art 166.
| Division | Element / Function | Documented Personnel |
|---|---|---|
| Sect Master | Gold Element Art; supreme authority over the sect 166. | Linghu Yan; later Chen Duan 224 454. |
| Wood Courtyard | Wood Element Art 148 166. | Elder Xia Jingtian; disciples include Chen Duan, Du Jun, Han Yang, Peng Ying, and Feng Cai 57 122 148 173. |
| Water Court | Water Element Art 166. | Elder Zhou Shang; Chief Disciple Ji Canghai 12 158. |
| Fire Court | Fire Element Art 166. | Elder Yan Cong 7. |
| Earth Court | Earth Element Art 166. | No head identified in the provided context. |
| Outer Sect | Steward-led administration 122. | Qi Baorui; Xu Wen also served as an outer court steward 122 163. |
| Law Enforcement Hall | A named sect institution; disciples were trapped there during the Spirit Gate disaster 498. | No head identified in the provided context. |
Rule Under Chen Duan
- Personal allegiance became the organizing principle. Martial strength, will, faith, and the sect’s purpose were aligned with Chen Duan rather than merely concentrated around his combat power 472.
- Qi Baorui and Mo Zhen initially questioned the system. Its resemblance to Linghu Yan’s centralized rule concerned them, but they observed stronger cohesion, faster action, and fewer internal conflicts 472.
- Yuanxiang and Myriad Extremes remained equal, independent organizations. Neither interfered with the other’s authority; preserving Yuanxiang’s name served as a keepsake for its original disciples 556.
- Refugees were not required to remain permanently. Some Shu Prefecture cultivators rebuilt their own sects, and Chen Duan did not restrict that choice 556.
Martial Inheritance
Hongyuan Five Elements Art
The sect-protecting ultimate skill offers a path beyond the Fifth Level. Its creator was Xuan Chenzi, the teacher associated with founding patriarch Pei Tianxiao 120 616.
| Art | Documented Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Gold Element Art | The inheritance traditionally reserved for the Sect Master; associated with sword techniques and the Gold Sword 166 224 509. |
| Wood Element Art | Strengthens endurance, cleanses poison and impurities, increases Blood Essence, and grants the Fourth Level regenerative ability Withered Wood Meets Spring 8 240. |
| Water Element Art | Includes Water Born Flowing Cloud and layered palm force capable of stacking to eighty-one waves 158 362. |
| Fire Element Art | Used by Pei Tianxiao through Cinder-Extinguishing Flame Body 505. |
| Earth Element Art | One of the inheritance’s five branches; Chen Duan acquired and cultivated it through limb grafting 166 268. |
Pei Tianxiao’s Boil the Sea draws upon the five elements of heaven and earth within a Spirit Gate, demonstrating the inheritance’s application at Martial Master level 511.
Wood Courtyard Instruction
- Scripture Pavilion: Holds hundreds of fist, foot, and weapon styles developed by generations of Wood Courtyard predecessors 148.
- Dao-Protecting Skills: These styles use Hongyuan Internal Qi and complement the Wood Element Art; they are not separate True Skills 148.
- Cultivation support: The sect supplies the Wood Element Art’s Great Medicine without charge to Chen Duan, unlike the medicines he must purchase for his outside techniques 160.
- Multiple-art limitation: Disciples entering with existing cultivation commonly face conflicting internal energies. The usual solution is to disperse their original True Skill and specialize in the sect’s inheritance 163.
Corrupted Cultivation Practices
- Wood Grafting Divine Art: A sinister derivative of the Wood Element Art. Its three components—Flower Transfer Grafting, Stealing Heaven Replacing Sun, and The Peach Replaces the Plum—involve limb, organ, and heart replacement. It requires at least the Wood Element Art’s Fourth Level before it can be attempted 7.
- Cultivation harvesting: Xia Jingtian planned to use disciple Peng Ying’s cultivation for his own advancement 57.
- Human-based pill refinement: Yan Cong consumed a pill made from Zhong Shou and became increasingly unstable while outer disciples disappeared 7.
