Status and Authority

A Demon King’s status is tied to Hell and its Authority system. When Marduk died, his Hell Authority returned to Hell, while a separately acquired Power Authority remained as blood for others to claim. 230

• A Hell Cornerstone may acknowledge a successor and merge Demon King Authority into them. Hellboy’s recognition by Marduk’s Cornerstone granted him authority and formed his Flame Crown. 230
• Demons within a conquered or inherited Hell territory submit to the acknowledged Demon King. 230
• A candidate requires a complete soul to become a Demon King. Slave contracts are incompatible with ascension and will either prevent it or be forcibly broken. 336
• Hell Will can empower or strip Demon King status, though it cannot remove the status of many Demon Kings simultaneously. 3060
• The Main World restricts Demon Kings from entering directly; alternate fused worlds can be used to bypass those restrictions. 2155

Demon King Level vs. Demon King Status

“Demon King level” does not necessarily mean one holds an actual Demon King position. Samuel’s Ability System could raise him to the level of a Demon King without fulfilling the stricter requirements needed to become one officially. 1460

Hell’s Demon Kings are not a unified faction. They routinely betray one another, pursue separate interests, and form alliances only when advantageous. 153

• Individual Demon Kings may cooperate temporarily to invade Earth, gather souls, resist a common enemy, or eliminate a rival. 960 973
• Hell’s wars intensify when Hell Will becomes active; Demon Kings grow through conflict rather than peaceful cultivation. 1409
• The strongest Demon King can compel recognition through force. Following Marduk’s death, Andrew installed Hellboy as his successor because no remaining faction could resist him. 230
• Demon Kings frequently pursue the title of Lord of Hell, but their internal rivalries make lasting unity difficult. 1450 1460

Known Successions and Subjugations

• Marduk → Hellboy — After Marduk’s death, Hellboy was acknowledged by Marduk’s Hell Cornerstone and became the new, though weakest, Demon King. 230
• Mechanical Demon King — Andrew repeatedly defeated, recruited, or forced Demon Kings into submission, eventually leaving Hell Will without a usable Demon King willing to oppose him. 3060
• Mechanical Demon King → Lord of Hell — After completing Hell’s Datafication, the Mechanical Demon King became Hell’s official Lord and granted the King of Abilities full authority over the realm. 3064
