Background

Tony is introduced as Stark Industries’ award-winning but overworked playboy genius. He is arrogant, physically run-down, and accustomed to pursuing luxury and fame rather than responsibility. An unknown man’s insult that he is the “weakest Stark” briefly wounds his pride enough for him to request a fitness coach. 11

During a weapons demonstration in the Middle East, Tony is attacked with Stark weaponry, severely injured, and captured by terrorists. In captivity, he and Yinsen build a miniature Arc Reactor and the Mark I armor. Yinsen’s sacrifice forces Tony to confront the human cost of his weapons business and inspires him to cherish his life. 12

After returning home, Tony shuts down Stark Industries’ weapons division and publicly confronts the corruption surrounding Obadiah Stane. When his armored identity is exposed, he refuses S.H.I.E.L.D.’s cover story and openly declares himself Iron Man. 13 17

In the later “Scripted World” phase, Tony receives fragmented memories from another Iron Man through Jarvis. The memories do not replace his personality, but give him knowledge of possible futures, Hydra’s role in his parents’ deaths, Obadiah’s betrayal, and the dangers connected to his own protagonist-like status. 3586 3587 3588

Tony is initially depicted with a small mustache, pale complexion, and exhausted appearance from chronic overwork. He later becomes visually inseparable from the ever-changing armored designs of Iron Man. 11
