Background / History

Diana was raised on Themyscira, also called Paradise Island, as the daughter of Queen Hippolyta. Though the Amazons regard her as a child despite her age of over five thousand years, she was trained from childhood by General Antiope and grew into their strongest warrior. She later learns that she is Zeus's daughter and was left as a weapon against Ares. 897 906

Her isolated upbringing leaves her unfamiliar with men, firearms, war, commerce, and social customs outside the island. Steve Trevor's arrival reveals the existence of World War I to her, convincing Diana that Ares must be responsible and strengthening her resolve to leave Themyscira. 892 893 895

After Steve reveals the scale of World War I, Diana becomes convinced that Ares is behind the conflict. Hao Shuai reveals her alleged divine origin, wins a duel against her, and becomes her husband after her divine power awakens through lightning training. 895 904

Departure from Paradise Island

Diana ends her brief honeymoon to pursue Ares and protect the outside world. Hippolyta accepts her decision after Hao Shuai promises that he can enable Diana to return through portals. Diana equips herself with the Amazons' divine treasures and receives Antiope's crown before leaving. 905 906
