Background

Sandman began as a miner on Lycaeus after transmigrating into the Warhammer universe. Though he possessed knowledge of future events, he initially avoided major interference, focused on preventing starvation within his camp, and waited for Korax—the future Raven King—to arrive. He considered his foreknowledge unreliable as the timeline changed and feared drawing the attention of stronger forces 1 9.

When Korax appeared, Sandman helped conceal him from the Tower and began organizing the miners rather than relying solely on the Primarch's strength. Korax eventually adopted the camp's custom of calling him “Boss,” placing Sandman in the unusual position of guiding an ideologically unformed Primarch 7 13.

During the uprising against Kiavahr's rulers, Sandman used stealth, coordinated attacks, and his emerging machine affinity to turn Sentinel Mechs against their pilots. While Korax confronted the Lord of the High Tower, Sandman targeted the Gravity Well that connected Lycaeus's ore production to Kiavahr's industrial system 19 49.

Appearance

Sandman's appearance changes substantially over the course of his evolution. During his military career, he commonly wears Raven Guard Power Armor or Command Terminator Armor and carries a Master-crafted Power Sword. Outside combat, he favors a simple black robe with gold trim and unfamiliar symbols 96 119.

After returning as the Death God, he manifests in a black Death God's robe surrounded by a faint purplish-black glow. To the wider Imperium, he appears as a seemingly lean figure whose presence compels instinctive reverence 190 239.

  • Uses black Raven Guard armor during campaigns 96.
  • Wears a black-and-gold robe when not armored 119.
  • Possesses a Warp Projection that develops into a Death God wielding a Death Scythe 119 169.
  • His material body can visibly crack after exerting power beyond its capacity 156.

Personality

Sandman is irreverent, sarcastic, and openly defiant toward authority. He repeatedly insults the Emperor, challenges his strategy, and refuses to behave like a conventional subordinate even after becoming one of humanity's highest authorities 58 70 108 211.

His apparent selfishness masks a practical sense of responsibility. He initially insists that future humanity's fate is not his concern, yet he consistently recruits and protects Primarchs, builds institutions on Savior Star, worries about Legion casualties, and tries to prevent disasters such as Isstvan V and Mortarion's corruption 59 110 120 189.

Sandman favors overwhelming, efficient solutions. He uses orbital bombardment, sabotage, virus weapons, minefields, and Exterminatus planning when he believes they will save Imperial lives or deny enemies strategic resources 97 118 151 152. However, atrocities against civilians provoke a deeply personal response: on Canta IX, grief over murdered humans drove him to personally execute the Klaav Rootfather 96.

Even after becoming a god, he retains humor, emotional attachment, and a longing for Savior Star. The Emperor considers this continued humanity unusual for a divine being 185 189.

Abilities & Skills

Territory-Based Empowerment

Sandman's physical strength grows through the people and forces within his territory.

  • Power increases with the number and quality of followers, especially powerful figures such as Korax and the Raven Guard 70.
  • Unlike Ork Waaagh! energy, he must replenish himself with external energy but does not lose accumulated strength when followers die 70.
  • Only worlds conquered by Korax or by people from Savior Star directly strengthen him; merely recruiting other Primarchs does not provide the same benefit 109.
  • Expansion of Raven Guard territory eventually pushes his physical body beyond Primarch-level strength 124.

Machine Spirit Affinity

Sandman can communicate with, influence, and command machines that possess Machine Spirits or advanced intelligent systems.

  • He can interfere with weapons, Machine Spirits, and intelligent systems through focused psychic power 43.
  • He turned Sentinel Mechs against their pilots during the Lycaeus uprising; the ability does not work on machines without Machine Spirits 49.
  • The relic warship Styx recognizes him as its destined master and forms a close master-servant bond with him 90.
  • His later C'tan-related authority allows him to interface with Necron systems and ensures the loyalty of Imperial Machine Spirits 106 238.

Martial Ability

Following Custodes, Astartes, and Primarch training, Sandman becomes an elite close-combatant and military commander.

  • Learns weapon use, marksmanship, battlefield tactics, Legion command, and lethal incapacitation methods 76 77.
  • Endures three days and nights of unrestricted combat training against Korax and Mortarion 77.
  • Defeats a First Legion Wind Lord with one kick, breaks a Crown Sky Soldier's training sword, and overcomes Grand Master Ullian in a controlled sword duel 82.
  • Uses his Master-crafted Power Sword to cut through Klaav forces and dismantle an Ork Tin Can Robot in close combat 96 118.

Psychic Power and Death Affinity

Sandman's psychic affinity is death: cold power that consumes souls and manifests as a developing Death God Projection.

  • Purification prevents absorbed spiritual energy from corrupting him 97.
  • His Warp Projection consumes the souls of slain xenos and, later, human dead; its growing hunger becomes dangerous even to allied psykers 97 120 124.
  • His psychic sight can detect hidden enemies and battlefield positions, though its effective range is about twelve kilometers 118.
  • He can employ Psychic Shields, lightning, teleportation, intimidation, frenzy effects, countermeasures, missiles, fireballs, and stasis techniques 118 119.
  • Early psychic teleportation leaves him exhausted for roughly a day, though his strength grows steadily thereafter 116.
  • His Death God Projection eventually manifests a scythe and becomes powerful enough to terrify Koz, whose prophetic sight cannot fully comprehend it 119 169.

C'tan-Derived Authorities

By consuming Void Dragon and other Star God fragments, Sandman acquires powers rooted in the Material Universe.

  • His cells consume Void Dragon energy and use it to fundamentally transform his body 76.
  • He can produce star-level fire without heating his surroundings and shape raw materials into weapons, including a Master-crafted Astartes bolter 151.
  • He creates black holes in fleet combat and can manipulate Rangdan technology at the code level 153 156.
  • Following his later fusion, he can alter physical laws, space, time, matter, light, stellar energy, and biological information 253.
  • He can identify weaknesses in god-level beings and optimize methods of killing them using combined C'tan and Tyranid-derived knowledge 253.

Divine Realm and Soul Protection

Sandman becomes humanity's Death God by establishing a Divine Realm in the Warp.

  • His realm receives and shelters human souls from the dangers of the Warp 184 239.
  • Fallen Astartes and Imperial warriors are housed in Soul Towers, while alien souls nourish the realm's heroic human spirits 184.
  • A monumental stele records every heroic human who died for humanity, including ordinary soldiers 184.
  • His full ascension initially limits his ability to act in the Material Universe until the Divine Realm stabilizes 184.
  • Humanity later recognizes him instinctively as the protector of its souls 239.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Pickaxe — Sandman's original tool as a Lycaean miner 1.
  • Master-crafted Power Sword — His primary personal weapon during the Great Crusade-era campaigns 96 118.
  • Hypercube Maze — Necron extradimensional container used to store Void Dragon fragments and other dangerous artifacts 76 87.
  • Styx — Relic flagship with a devoted Machine Spirit, a Death Ray, powerful secondary armament, and an attached escort fleet 90.
  • Captured Rangdan War Moon — Seized for use as a future body and expansion platform for Styx 156.
  • Protective necklaces — Sandman gives black and green necklaces to Korax and Mortarion as safeguards against future crises involving the Emperor 131 184.

Relationships

  • Korax — Sandman's closest Primarch ally and originally his “little brother.” Korax calls him “Boss,” trusts his guidance, and receives a divine blessing that converts filtered faith into personal strength 13 183.
  • The Emperor — Hostile ally and eventual equal. They argue, fight, insult one another, and cooperate on humanity's survival; the Emperor ultimately elevates Sandman to Supreme Human 58 70 175 211.
  • Mortarion — Close friend and frequent target of Sandman's teasing. Sandman actively works to prevent Mortarion's fall to Nurgle, gives him protective gifts, and leaves him a final blessing before ascending 131 184 189.
  • Styx — Sandman's loyal flagship and Machine Spirit companion. Sandman regards her as valuable enough to seek a stronger body for her, while Styx addresses him as her all-powerful master 90 156.
  • Nekser — Trusted aide and Shadow Kill commander. Sandman entrusts him with sensitive duties, including protecting a murdered child's body and commanding independent operations 96 118.
  • Aquillon — Custodes trainer, witness, advisor, and later Fire-Forging Academy instructor. He gradually recognizes that Sandman's relationship with the Emperor is closer to an audacious partnership than obedience 78 120 132.
  • Koz — Night Lords Primarch whose destructive prophetic visions Sandman suppresses. Sandman challenges Koz's fatalism and offers him relief from the uncontrolled flow of possible futures 169 170.
  • Sanguinius — A Primarch Sandman seeks to recover and protect. Sandman's Death God Projection instinctively attacks Sanguinius's psychic probe, forcing Sandman to restrain it 124.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Lycaeus Rebellion

Sandman begins as a miner awaiting Korax's arrival, then becomes an organizer and strategist for the Saviors Camp. He helps conceal Korax, trains and preserves future Raven Guard personnel, and undermines Kiavahr's oppression by taking control of its machines and logistics 7 13 48 49.

Imperial Alliance and Primarch Recovery

After the Emperor enters his life, Sandman becomes a reluctant but influential Imperial ally. He receives elite training, proves his authority over the First Legion through combat, assists in recovering the Lion, and gains the relic flagship Styx 76 82 87 90.

Khrave and Ork Campaigns

Sandman leads Raven Guard operations against the Khrave and Orks. The horrors of Canta IX trigger his first major act of personal vengeance, while the accumulated psychic energy of the dead awakens his death-affinity powers 96 97. He later directs planetary assaults, defeats an Ork Psyker Boy, and begins recognizing the predatory development of his Warp Projection 118 119.

Rangdan War

During the Rangdan conflict, Sandman evolves from a powerful commander into a cosmic combatant. He prepares Exterminatus-level strategies, creates C'tan-derived weapons, destroys or captures Rangdan War Moons, and confronts the Rak'Gol Supreme across multiple dimensions 151 153 156 164.

He ultimately conceptually erases the Rak'Gol Supreme, ends the Rak'Gol War, gains authority over war, and receives the faith of humanity as a godslayer 175.

Ascension as the Human Death God

Sandman completes his Divine Realm by consuming Ynnead's remnants and associated Death Power. His ascension protects human souls after death but erases the name “Sandman” from Imperial memory and records, separating him from the Material Universe for a century 184 185.

Return and Later Evolution

After returning, Sandman continues guarding Korax and Mortarion, intervenes in the wars against Chaos, and reappears publicly as humanity's Supreme protector 189 235 239. He later reunites two divided consciousnesses on Netherbone Star, creating a vastly more powerful unified form capable of directly manipulating physical law 253.
