Background / History

For centuries, the Emperor guided humanity from the shadows. At Malcador the Sigillite's urging, he openly assumed responsibility for the species: he unified warlord-ridden Terra, improved the Space Marine project, allied with Mars, and began the Great Crusade to restore humanity's lost territory 2.

To lead the Crusade, he combined his own gene-template with forbidden Warp technology to create twenty Primarchs. Their gene-lines became the foundation of the Space Marine Legions, the Imperium's principal military force 2.

The Emperor personally retrieved several scattered Primarchs, including Korax, Mortarion, Lion El'Jonson, and Rogal Dorn. His reunion with Korax on Lycaeus was formal and awkward, though he acknowledged Korax as his son and showed concern for his hardships 54 55. He later removed Angron's Butcher's Nails through a brutal emergency surgery, saving Angron from their effects 89.

After encountering Sandman, the Emperor recognized that Sandman's death-aligned power originated from the faith directed toward the future God-Emperor. He responded by increasing Raven Guard resources and training, while also providing Sandman with relics, a fleet, and dangerous means of growth 109 76.

The Emperor planned around the Chaos Gods' long-term threat, believing the Imperium had roughly 150 years before their full attention turned toward humanity. He expected to eventually take the Golden Throne himself to keep humanity from being devoured by Chaos 144.

During the Great Heresy, the Emperor directly entered the Warp conflict. Personality

The Emperor is a visionary willing to shoulder immense personal burdens for humanity. He treats the survival and expansion of the Imperium as priorities above individual lives, political resentment, and even the loyalty of his own sons 132 144.

He is calculating and often manipulative. He tested Horus's loyalty by feigning weakness during the Ullanor campaign, keeps dangerous Primarchs alive when they remain useful, and considers using Alpharius as bait to expose hidden Chaos cultists 145 172.

His paternal behavior is inconsistent. He calls the Primarchs his sons and provides gifts, guidance, and rescue, yet also regards them as instruments within a broader plan. His relationship with Sandman is similarly contradictory: he acts as mentor and benefactor, but frequently suppresses, fights, or harshly trains him 55 76 103 108.
