Background / History

At Malcador’s urging, the Emperor openly assumed responsibility for humanity’s future. He unified war-torn Terra, improved the Space Marines, allied with the Adeptus Mechanicus of Mars, and began the Great Crusade to reclaim lost human worlds 2.

Although he built the Primarchs as essential instruments for humanity’s revival, he initially regarded them as numbered military assets. His recovery of Korax forced him to confront their personal identity: Malcador persuaded him to approach the Nineteenth Primarch as a son rather than a tool, while the Emperor anxiously prepared a weapon, a Legion, and the Kiavahr System as gifts 53 57.

The Emperor’s relationship with Sandman began with mutual suspicion. He recognized a fragment of his own power within Sandman, while Sandman could see through the Emperor’s psychic disguise. Their first private discussion ended with the Dark King’s influence possessing Sandman and provoking a brawl; the Emperor defeated and healed him, then received warnings about the Webway Project, Chaos, and an unstable future timeline 57 58.

He altered Imperial strategy in response to Sandman’s knowledge. This included pursuing Ork War Moon technology as an alternative to Warp travel, reducing reliance on the Webway Project, strengthening the Raven Guard to accelerate Sandman’s growth, and involving multiple Imperial institutions in technological research rather than allowing Mars to monopolize it 60 77 109.

During the Rangdan conflict, the Emperor coordinated directly with Sandman against the Rak’Gol Supreme. Rather than attempting a costly godslaying strike, he used an avatar to distract the Supreme while Divine Corruption spread through Rangdan territory, then shielded the Imperial retreat with a golden barrier 163. He later personally purged the alien divine energy embedded in Sandman’s body and transported the Raven Guard back to the Imperial front 164.

As the Great Heresy approached, the Emperor recognized Sandman as an equal partner rather than a useful subordinate. He proclaimed him Supreme Human of the Imperium, granting Sandman authority equal to his own over military, civil, religious, and political affairs; the Custodes and Sisters of Silence were reorganized into the Imperial Retinue serving both rulers 211.

The Emperor personally led Imperial forces through the Maelstrom, using golden psychic power to clear Warp routes, destroy daemons, and challenge the Chaos Gods openly 219. The resulting God War left him catastrophically wounded. After returning to Terra, he was placed upon the Golden Throne and entered a coma, but issued final orders establishing the Ecclesiarchy and Death Cult, dividing the Legions into successor Chapters, creating the High Lords of Terra, and naming Korax the nominal second Emperor 227.

After ten thousand years unconscious, the Emperor’s mind was entered by Sandman with Luo Jia’s aid. Sandman helped defeat the lingering consciousnesses of Khorne and Tzeentch within the Emperor’s devastated spiritual world, after which the Emperor required another fifty to one hundred years of recovery 261 264 265. He ultimately awakened alongside Sandman and the ascended Luo Jia, once again taking command of a massive Imperial campaign 266 267.

Appearance

The Emperor’s appearance is partly a psychic construct. To most observers he presents an overwhelming golden, divine image, but Sandman initially saw an ordinary bald middle-aged man; his undisguised form is described as a middle-aged man with a Central Asian appearance 55 57.

He is willing to purge political conspirators, use enemy technology, manipulate rival powers, and accept severe collateral consequences if doing so protects the Imperium’s long-term survival 60 127 163. His concern is real but often expressed through control, resources, harsh instruction, or grand gifts rather than emotional openness.

His rapport with Sandman reveals a more petty and humorous side. The two routinely insult and strike one another, while the Emperor responds with taunts, excessive force, and practical assistance.
