Background / History
Arrival on Lycaeus
Korax arrives on Lycaeus as an unnamed, childlike Primarch known only as Number Nineteen. Sandman gives him the name “Korax,” which he accepts, and Korax immediately proves capable of using psychic power to heal miners who would otherwise have been left to die 12 13.
Though inexperienced with society, Korax rapidly learns through observation. He adopts Sandman’s title of “Boss,” questions why Sandman seems to know so much about him, and begins examining the conditions endured by Lycaeus’s miners 13. His first combat action alongside Sandman is the destruction of Shattered Skull, a raider gang that preyed on mining settlements 17 21.
The raid forces Korax to confront humanity’s extremes of compassion and cruelty. Rather than answering his questions directly, Sandman sends him across Lycaeus, the Tower, and Kiavahr to understand oppression firsthand and decide what should be done about it 23.
Revolutionary leader
Over two years, Korax steals medicine, weapons, and supplies from the Tower, distributes them to oppressed camps, studies politics and warfare, and strengthens Shadow Kill’s intelligence and assassination capabilities 25 26. He concludes that the miners must overthrow the Tower and rule themselves 26 32.
Korax first unites the camps behind a two-day planetary strike, exploiting Kiavahr’s dependence on Lycaean ore. He promises that improved supplies will allow each camp to raise trained forces before the planned uprising 32. After the Eleventh Purge, he orders the scattered settlements consolidated into defensible camps, accepting the painful responsibilities of leadership despite his grief over civilian losses 38.
Before the final uprising, Korax infiltrates the Tower and sabotages Heavy Howitzer ammunition with Shadow Power and a Psychic Array 44 45. During the revolt, he infiltrates Lord Akalin’s guarded chamber, immobilizes the ruler’s guards with Shadow Chains, and defeats Akalin with a single kick 51 52.
Primarch of the Raven Guard
Sandman reveals that Korax is one of the Emperor’s sons and is destined to command a Legion created from his genetic template. Korax nevertheless prioritizes the liberation of Lycaeus before pursuing his wider destiny 27.
After reuniting with the Emperor, Korax meets more than 20,000 warriors of the 19th Legion aboard the Emperor’s Shadow. He calls them his “brothers,” learns their names and faces, and renames the Legion the Raven Guard 69.
As Primarch, Korax leads the Legion through campaigns against the Krav/Khrave Xenos, coordinates fleet warfare from the Gloriana-class flagship Shadow, and insists that the Raven Guard must master conventional warfare as well as stealth and assassination 91 92 93. During the Rangdan war, he commits Raven Guard veterans and recruits to the front, ultimately suffering catastrophic Astartes losses 171.
Second Emperor and ascension
Following the defeat of the rebellion, Korax sacrifices his divine foundation to wound Slaanesh and is later named the Imperium’s nominal second Emperor while gravely wounded 227. After six thousand years of dormancy within Sandman’s damaged Divine Realm, he awakens on Terra and assumes supreme authority over the Imperium 231.
As second Emperor, Korax removes restrictions on Legion strength, reactivates veteran Astartes, expands the Imperium’s military forces, and leads an expedition into Nurgle’s Garden to aid Mortarion 231. After more than a thousand years of involvement in the struggle over Nurgle’s authority, he ascends in the dying Garden and becomes shadow itself 274.
Appearance
Korax initially has a childlike body despite his Primarch strength and intelligence. By the Lycaean uprising, he is a tall, handsome man; after his long dormancy, he is described as having snow-white skin and midnight-black hair 12 51 231.
- His mature appearance is marked by pale skin and dark hair 231.
- His movements can be completely silent, even during his ascension 274.
- During godhood, his body becomes flattened and shadowlike, as though collapsing from three dimensions into two 274.
- His ascended form has no fixed shape, size, location, sound, or visible presence 274.
Personality
Korax begins as curious, observant, and compassionate toward the oppressed. The contrast between the Saviors Camp’s kindness and the raiders’ cruelty deeply troubles him, leading him to question how humanity can contain both good and evil 23.
His compassion does not prevent ruthlessness. He systematically terrorizes and eliminates criminal gangs, accepts casualties as part of rebellion, and tells Sandman that future oppressors should be killed 26 32 38. Even so, he remains personally disturbed by the miners lost under his leadership 38.
As Primarch, Korax leads through personal connection rather than distance. He calls the Raven Guard his brothers, refuses to favor warriors by class or origin, and personally memorizes the faces of thousands of Legionaries 69. In later centuries, he becomes calm, administratively capable, and strategically cautious, while retaining a restrained but intense hatred for traitors and enemies of humanity 190 218.
Abilities & Skills
Shadow Power
Korax’s defining power is his affinity with darkness and concealment.
- Merges with darkness to locate concealed enemies and move unseen through hostile tunnels 21.
- Uses darkness as psychological warfare, wounding enemies and letting fear collapse their morale before killing their leader 21.
- Can evade surveillance by causing observers to ignore his image on monitoring screens 26.
- Can adopt shadow form to escape the Tower and bypass its security systems 44.
- Can be exposed in environments deliberately stripped of shadows 44.
- At godhood, becomes the source of shadows and the absence of perception itself 274.
Psychic Power
Korax’s psychic abilities emerge instinctively and expand into healing, defense, sabotage, and restraint.
- Heals hidden injuries and stabilizes mortally wounded miners with black psychic energy 12 13.
- Reinforces weapons and creates shields capable of blocking enemy fire 20.
- Creates Shadow Chains to immobilize Akalin and his guards during their confrontation 51.
- Inscribes Psychic Arrays that conceal sabotage and alert him if anyone interferes with the affected objects 45.
- Develops Shadow Step, a psychic stealth technique that requires psyker potential and punishing physical and mental training 29.
Primarch physiology and combat
Korax possesses overwhelming physical strength, speed, perception, and combat instinct.
- Tears off a supervisor’s head immediately after emerging from his amniotic pod 17.
- Fires arrows deeply into solid rock despite being unfamiliar with a longbow 19.
- Detects and eliminates hidden sentries more effectively than veteran Shadow Kill operatives 19.
- Defeats Akalin, despite his Precision Power Armor and power sword, with a single kick 51 52.
- Can use stealth to position heavy assets such as Sentinel Mechs inside enemy-held territory 52.
Military leadership and doctrine
Korax transforms the Raven Guard from a stealth-focused force into a more versatile Legion.
- Organizes Lycaean camps into a coordinated strike and later uprising against the Tower 32 45.
- Places Shadow Kill under a system of advanced infiltration training and develops the Triple Shadow Path for multiple combat roles 29.
- Separates Terran veterans and Savior Star recruits during early integration, while planning their eventual unification within the Legion 91.
- Uses fleet formations, capital ships, Mechanicus vessels, and torpedo craft according to their battlefield roles 93.
- Mobilizes nearly 5,000 Raven Guard ships with synchronized, silent precision during the campaign against the traitors 218.
Warp Essence and divinity
Korax’s later power is rooted in a profound understanding of Warp Essence and divine authority.
- Teaches Mortarion that true mastery requires accepting one’s essence rather than treating it as an external tool 218.
- Receives a blessing that protects him from the spiritual corruption inherent in faith power 183.
- Sacrifices his own divine foundation to attack Slaanesh 227.
- Ascends by withdrawing beneath causality, time, reality, memory, and observation rather than expanding his presence in the Warp 274.
