Background / History

Driven south by a disastrous northern snowstorm that left its pack starving, the Wolf King led the wolves’ assault on Falling Star Lake Village. Towering as large as a calf, it directed the pack from the village center before confronting Chen Qing. It survived Chen Qing’s meteor-like palm strike, but was left scorched, bleeding, and unable to flee with the retreating pack 3 4.

The following day, villagers found it dying at the edge of the Black Pine Forest, its hind leg mangled to the bone after an apparent fight with other wild beasts. Though the villagers sought revenge for the attack, A Ning approached it without fear. The Wolf King lowered its forehead to her shoe in submission, recognizing her as its master 5.

Chen Qing prevented the villagers from killing it and treated its injuries with star power and Blue Wound Grass. It remained in Uncle Po’s courtyard despite Chen Qing’s request that it return to the mountains, accepting A Ning’s care while displaying open disdain for most others 6.

When Chen Qing, A Ning, and the Wolf King left Falling Star Lake Village, the Wolf King became a constant protector of their party. It routed roadside ambushers, guarded the escort caravan to Iron Wall City, fought assassins at Dry Bone Town, and shielded A Ning from poisoned crossbow bolts during a canyon ambush 9 11 12 14.

After exposure to the residual starlight around Chen Qing’s cultivation, it fully recovered from its injuries. Its body became more robust, its fur brighter, and its intelligence more pronounced 22.

The Wolf King is an exceptionally large wolf whose size, predatory presence, and glowing eyes regularly terrify humans and animals alike.

The Wolf King is proud, territorial, and highly selective in its affection. It is completely submissive to A Ning, calming immediately under her touch and acting with unwavering devotion to her 5 6.

It treats Chen Qing with grudging tolerance: it accepts his treatment, follows his party, and fights beside him, but reacts dismissively when Chen Qing tries to command or touch it casually 6 12. Its behavior around villagers is deliberately mischievous; it frightens spying children and splashes water near villagers’ laundry, then appears pleased with itself 7.

Despite its arrogance, the Wolf King is alert, intelligent, and fiercely protective. It instinctively guards A Ning, resents strangers approaching her, and remains vigilant during travel and rests 7 11 23.

Found dying after a second battle in the Black Pine Forest, it recognizes A Ning as its master. Chen Qing protects and treats it, bringing it into Uncle Po’s household despite the villagers’ fear and food shortage 5 6.

Departure from the Village

The Wolf King’s presence worsens the villagers’ unease, contributing to Chen Qing’s decision to leave. It departs with Chen Qing and A Ning, becoming part of their small traveling family 7 8.
