Background / History

A Ning's surname and origins are unknown. She initially lived alone in an abandoned shrine at the edge of Falling Star Lake Village, surviving on scraps and occasional charity. Villagers regarded her as a mute, and she was thin, guarded, and dressed in faded patched clothing. 2

After village children, led by Er Gouzi, harassed her and destroyed the small bundle of food and grasshoppers she carried, Chen Qing intervened. He gradually earned her trust through small acts of kindness, including returning a grasshopper she had made and teaching her to read simple characters, weave grass crafts, and listen to stories. 2 3

During the wolf attack on Falling Star Lake Village, A Ning pleaded for Chen Qing to spare the Alpha Wolf. When the gravely injured Wolf King later appeared at the Black Pine Forest, it submitted to her by touching its forehead to her shoe, recognizing her as its master. 4 5
