Background

Huang Chao was originally a scholar of genuine civil and martial talent. Repeatedly excluded from the imperial examinations because the system was controlled by noble families, he became embittered by the dynasty and resolved to enter Chang'an “with [his] blade” rather than through examination. 338 645

He rose as the leader of the Yellow Disaster Army with the Locust God's support. Although this backing rapidly elevated his martial ability and enabled his rebellion, he recognized that his own Swordplay had stopped at Dao Attainment and sought a method to break through from Frost Consort. 340

Huang Chao came to regard himself as an instrument of Destiny: the one fated to “Uphold the Dao, Initiate Calamity.” He believed his massacres, the destruction of the dynasty, and the suffering caused by the Yellow Disaster Army were necessary acts of Heaven's will. 476 481

Early in his campaign, Huang Chao is openly arrogant, domineering, and contemptuous of challengers. He humiliates opponents, treats promises as disposable when they no longer suit him, and refuses to justify killing even when surrounded by hostile martial artists. 341 466

After his setbacks at Wancheng, he deliberately becomes more restrained and calculating. He conceals his sharpness behind a gentler demeanor, uses disguises and public opinion to frame Xiao Ran, and cultivates alliances rather than relying solely on intimidation. 363 400 451 460

He is intensely conscious of fate and historical legacy. Huang Chao admits his atrocities but considers them the price of destroying corrupt noble families and an exhausted dynasty. Huang Chao announces his arrival by displaying the heads of renowned Lightness Skill masters beneath the banner of the Soaring General. He offers fame, gold, and noble titles to anyone able to kill him, then effortlessly kills the challengers who accept. 337 339

He duels Gao Yuting under the condition that he must endure her three moves without moving. Gao Yuting's hidden move, Sacrifice Self for Righteousness, catches him off guard; Huang Chao then attempts to break his promise and kill her. 340 341

Battle Against Xiao Ran

Huang Chao dismisses Xiao Ran's Yan Sheng Art until Xiao Ran summons the Butcher, whose attacks severely injure him and force out the Locust God's manifestation. 354

Xiao Ran discovers Huang Chao's intact Heavenly Being body, personal sword, and Locust Ranking in the coffin, but finds his memory scroll completely blank. 742

Huang Chao's remaining will later attempts to possess Xiao Ran. The plan fails when the Dragon Lip Pearl traps his divided Primordial Spirit in illusion, allowing Xiao Ran to erase and absorb the final remnant through the Soul Cultivation Technique. 746
