Background / History
As Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and one of the Legendary Sannin, Orochimaru holds enough influence in Konoha to maintain an independent, fully staffed laboratory. Having witnessed death’s cruelty from a young age, he pursues knowledge as a means of overcoming mortality and regards time as his most precious resource 5 115.
His early Wood Release research uses human subjects. One failed experiment turns a living subject into a wooden sculpture, killing them. After his first encounter with the Church of Bones, he revises a report to request prisoners for further experiments 5 8.
Recruitment into the Twilight Hermit Society
Orochimaru first enters the Church of Bones after losing consciousness in his laboratory. He threatens Uchiha Sōgetsu, only to be restrained by Hatake Sakumo, whose apparent survival contradicts reports of his suicide. Sōgetsu explains that Sakumo’s physical body is dead but his consciousness persists 5 6.
Orochimaru agrees to join the Twilight Hermit Society in exchange for knowledge about souls. Initially, he cares little whether its “Master” actually exists; he even offers Konoha’s bloodline secrets, the Scroll of Seals, and the First Hokage’s cells as bargaining material. His commitment deepens when Sōgetsu shows him a future in which he survives but loses his position, teacher, friendships, and dream. Unwilling to accept that outcome, he pledges loyalty and resolves to defy fate 6 7.
Appearance
Orochimaru is tall and slender, with an unnaturally pale complexion and a cold, handsome face. His appearance repeatedly evokes a venomous serpent 16 186 219.
- Hair: Long and black, reaching his waist in later descriptions 219 458.
- Eyes: Narrow, with snake-like vertical pupils; described as pale gold in several passages 113 115 219.
- Eye makeup: Purple eyeshadow 5 458.
- Clothing: Frequently wears a white kimono with wide sleeves; briefly wears the Hokage robe at his inauguration 5 186 213.
- Accessories: Magatama earrings appear during his meeting with Naruto at Hiruzen’s grave 458.
Personality
Orochimaru’s curiosity consistently outweighs conventional morality. He treats human lives, souls, and even former companions as potential research material. His pursuit of immortality eventually makes the Hokage position seem like a waste of time compared with the possibilities opened by Adam and the Twilight Hermit Society 5 195 509.
He is calculating rather than blindly reckless. Before testing Adam, he divides and hides pieces of his soul among subordinates as a contingency. Nevertheless, his confidence repeatedly exceeds his understanding: Adam’s response terrifies him, while his fascination with Might Duy’s Eight Inner Gates leaves him catastrophically injured 115 220 221.
His dealings with others mix manipulation, mockery, and selective cooperation. He exploits Mikoto’s desperation to resurrect Sōgetsu and withholds information about Naruto’s parents while offering power instead. Yet he also helps oppose White Zetsu’s impersonation of Hiruzen and later provides assistance to Konoha through Kabuto 224 225 449 464 509.
Abilities & Skills
Biological Modification and Survival
- Modifies his body before defecting, allowing him to survive Might Duy’s kick despite having roughly half his body destroyed 221.
- Transforms his lower body into a serpent and extends his neck to attack or escape 217 221 437.
- Uses Great Serpent Substitute Jutsu to emerge from a damaged body, escaping Amaterasu’s flames 222.
- Limit: Great Serpent Substitute consumes substantial chakra. Repeated injuries and substitutions leave him severely depleted during his escape 222 227.
Snake Techniques
- Shadow Snake Hand / Shadow Multiple Snake Hand: Releases venomous snakes from his sleeves to attack, restrain, or interrupt opponents 5 115 215 220.
- Dense Python Technique: Produces enormous waves of snakes capable of overwhelming groups of Anbu 220 221.
- Uses snakes as extensions of his vision to search his laboratory 115.
- Employs reverse summoning to reach prepared locations and coordinate with allies 438 450.
- Limits: Mikoto’s Amaterasu incinerates his massed snakes; uncontrolled snakes also contribute to the accidents during Adam’s punishment 115 221.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Revives Hashirama and Tobirama Senju for Sōgetsu using two mortally wounded elite Anbu who volunteer as sacrifices 186.
- Inserts a control talisman into the reanimated Sōgetsu during the inauguration battle 216.
- Later summons Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Second Tsuchikage, Mū, against the Hokage impostor 448.
- Prepares specially modified White Zetsu as sacrifices for Kabuto’s later summoning operation 510.
- Limit: Hiruzen exploits the reanimated bodies’ destruction and restoration to create an opportunity to break Orochimaru’s control 217.
Soul Manipulation
- Uses an immature technique to sever part of his soul, subdivide it, and conceal the fragments within subordinates as a possible revival safeguard 115.
- Uses Soul Seizing Technique to send a resentful spirit into Sasuke, controlling her body while it consumes her consciousness 436 437.
- Limits: His soul-fragment contingency would require a lengthy revival. Sasuke briefly resists possession after Naruto returns to protect her 115 436.
Secret Technique Instructor
- Reproduces extraordinary abilities from other pathways when suitable materials are available 451.
- Uses a Sun Talisman to scorch Mr. A, whose shepherded abilities include the Demon Pathway 451.
- Limits: Repeated extraordinary ability use exhausts him, and the Sun Talisman burns out after use 451.
Combat and Defensive Ninjutsu
- Uses Fire Release and Wind Release, including Fire Dragon Bullet, Great Breakthrough, and Vacuum Great Ball, with rapid transitions between techniques 220.
- Makes a C-rank technique display power comparable to an A-rank technique 220.
- Wields a sword with enough precision to cut apart Sasuke’s incoming shuriken 436.
- Uses Triple Rashomon defensively, though Mr. A’s corrosive flesh-and-blood attacks melt through it 451.
- Employs overwhelming killing intent and psychological pressure to intimidate Team 7 and test Sasuke’s resistance 435 436.
Research and Occult Resources
- Produces a successful Wood Release experimental subject but conceals the result because it does not match the First Hokage’s abilities 147.
- Acquires a Gate Pathway Extraordinary Characteristic and initiates Naruto into the potion system 464.
- Recognizes that Sasuke’s spirit body has been sealed by genjutsu and directs Naruto to a prepared potion 508.
- Warns that directly consuming an Extraordinary Characteristic carries a high risk of losing control and becoming a mindless monster 509.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Named weapon used while confronting White Zetsu 453.
- Sun Talisman — Reproduces a Sun Pathway effect; expended during the battle with Mr. A 451.
- Reanimation scrolls and control talismans — Used for Impure World Reincarnation and control of summoned bodies 186 216.

- Experimental bases — Include a staffed Konoha laboratory and a secret facility protected by mysterious runes and a shifting layout 5 464.
Relationships
- Uchiha Sōgetsu / Adam — Recruiter and source of higher knowledge. Orochimaru pledges loyalty, secretly tests his power, and later fears the consequences of disloyalty. Adam assists his escape through another person’s dream 7 115 219 470.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and former object of respect. Their relationship deteriorates over concealed research, political hypocrisy, and Orochimaru’s defection. Orochimaru later reanimates him to expose White Zetsu’s impersonation 147 212 215 448 458.
- Hatake Sakumo / White Fang — Initially restrains him in the Church of Bones, then becomes an operational partner. Sakumo assists the tablet-theft plan but warns Orochimaru against abusing their agreement with Mikoto 5 212 225.
- Uzumaki Naruto — Target of a curse mark, then dependent student. Orochimaru rescues him from Anbu, provides extraordinary power, and oversees two years of training while withholding promised answers about his parents 437 438 462 464 487.
- Jiraiya — Friend, fellow Sannin, and former companion who failed to bring him back. Their later reunion leads to cooperation with Konoha, though Orochimaru openly relishes the possibility of studying him as a test subject 16 464 508 509.
- Shimura Danzō — Research collaborator and object of suspicion. Hiruzen characterizes the human experiments as a private arrangement between them when threatening Orochimaru 8 113 212.
- Uchiha Mikoto — Enemy enraged by his treatment of Sōgetsu’s soul. He survives her pursuit by offering a possible route to resurrection and imposing a secrecy seal 221 222 224 225.
- Uchiha Sasuke — Experimental target during the Chunin Exams. Orochimaru tests her skills and consciousness for signs of hypnosis or a hidden connection; later identifies her sealed spirit body 436 508.
- Mitaraishi Anko — Former student who reacts to his return with hatred and lingering emotional pain 442.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Research subordinate who accompanies his experiments and represents him in assisting Konoha and the Ninja Alliance 509 510.
- Ōnoki — Fellow Twilight Hermit Society member whose rapid advancement troubles him. Orochimaru advises him to stop his course toward war, but Ōnoki refuses 487 490.
- Konan — Society colleague entrusted with Adam’s private Dreamscape. Her revelation reassures Orochimaru that Adam has left a contingency within the organization 470.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Testing Adam
Danzō’s transformation and Sōgetsu’s unusual techniques prompt Orochimaru to investigate whether they are connected to the entity he knows as Adam. He prepares soul-based safeguards and attempts a secret test. A cascade of inexplicable laboratory accidents—including corrosive chemical spills and dangerous debris—nearly kills him, forcing him to admit defeat and submit 113 115.
Reviving the Founding Hokage
Orochimaru helps Sōgetsu revive Hashirama and Tobirama during the Third Great Ninja War. Their return changes the military and political situation, and both endorse Sōgetsu as Fourth Hokage. After the war, Tobirama favors Orochimaru as a successor for his political sensitivity and ruthless methods, but Orochimaru rejects the position in favor of immortality research 186 188 195.
Fifth Hokage and the Konoha Collapse Plan
After repeated refusals, Orochimaru accepts Hiruzen’s offer to become Fifth Hokage while arranging for White Fang to retrieve the Blasphemy Stone Tablet during the ceremony. Immediately after his inauguration, he publicly declares his defection, summons the Nine-Tails, and traps the former Hokage within the Four Violet Flames Formation. The spectacle serves as a diversion for the theft from Root headquarters 211 212 213 214 219.
His battle with the former Hokage ends when Adam transports him through another person’s dream; this escape only relocates him within Konoha, not beyond its borders. At the gates, Might Duy severely injures him with the Eight Inner Gates, and Mikoto subsequently pursues him with Amaterasu. Orochimaru negotiates with her over Sōgetsu’s resurrection, then escapes a later encounter with Mr. A alongside White Fang 217 219 220 221 222 224 225 227.
Hiruzen issues a kill-on-sight warrant. Three years later, Orochimaru’s public betrayal remains a major cause of Konoha’s loss of mission clients and the Land of Fire daimyo’s funding cuts 231 242.
Forest of Death and the Hokage Impostor
Orochimaru infiltrates the Chunin Exams and attacks Team 7, using Sasuke as a test subject rather than simply killing her. Naruto returns to protect her and gains power through Lu Mingze, defeating Orochimaru. Before disappearing, Orochimaru bites Naruto, plants a curse mark, and invites him to seek answers about his parents 435 436 437 438.
He subsequently impersonates the Third Kazekage and confronts White Zetsu, who has replaced Hiruzen. Working with other Twilight Hermit Society members, he summons deceased Kage and uses extraordinary techniques against the impostor and its Aurora Society supporters. The confrontation is disrupted when Obito appears and impales him with a broken sword tip 447 448 449 450 451 454.
Naruto’s Defection and Training
At Hiruzen’s grave, Orochimaru reveals that the real Third Hokage was killed approximately three years earlier; the reanimated Hiruzen confirms the impersonation. Later, Orochimaru intercepts the Anbu pursuing Naruto, claims the boy as his own, and takes him to an experimental base 458 462.
He refuses to provide the promised truth immediately, arguing that Naruto is too weak, and instead supplies a Gate Pathway Extraordinary Characteristic. After two years under his influence, Naruto becomes quieter and more composed. Orochimaru, now Sequence 3, helps identify an opportunity for Naruto’s promotion ritual: sealing a Sequence 4 Black Knight pursuing Jiraiya’s group 464 487 508.
Cooperation with Konoha
When Jiraiya reaches his base with Sakura and an unconscious Sasuke, Orochimaru identifies Sasuke’s condition and directs Naruto to a prepared potion. He also sends Kabuto to support Konoha and the Ninja Alliance, supplying specially manufactured White Zetsu sacrifices for an Impure World Reincarnation operation 508 509 510.
