Background
Sōgetsu is an Uchiha orphan and a transmigrator whose detached knowledge of events initially lets him observe the ninja world from a third-person perspective. Fearing death and the risk of losing control inherent to higher Sequences, he chose the Spectator branch of the Visionary Pathway for its focus on the mind and spirit. The Pathway is exceptionally compatible with the Uchiha Sharingan, amplifying his genjutsu, hypnosis, and psychological suggestion. 2 71 91
At fifteen, he works as both a ninja and psychologist while advancing from Sequence 7 to Sequence 6. Hiruzen Sarutobi recruits him into the Anbu, where he adopts the codename Owl and registers Medical Ninjutsu and Psychological Therapy among his skills. 2 3 4
Appearance
After becoming a Hypnotist, Sōgetsu's body develops an overtly inhuman combat aspect. His usual Sharingan is blood-red with three tomoe, while a strange abyss-like vortex can appear within his pupils. 2
- Dense golden scales cover his body when he draws on his Sequence 6 power. 2
- At Sequence 4, his dragon-scale armor becomes gray and inscribed with complex, three-dimensional symbols. 193
- His Mangekyo Sharingan forms a four-pointed pinwheel pattern. 102
- He later operates under the feminine identity Uesugi Yue. 428
Personality
Sōgetsu is controlled, theatrical, and highly skilled at presenting exactly the persona others want to see. He can suppress his emotions so completely that even the Sharingan cannot read them, and he deceives Fugaku with an elaborate display of grief and Uchiha patriotism. 3 14
Behind his gentle public image, he treats people and events as pieces in a long-term plan. He cultivates loyalty, steers others through hypnosis and suggestion, and is willing to use cruelty to provoke the emotions he needs from Obito, Kakashi, and others. 20 48 55
His detachment is also a personal danger: viewing the world solely as a Spectator risks stripping away his humanity and causing loss of control. He recognizes this risk after saving a child in Kirigakure, and later relies on faith and anchors to stabilize himself against the growing influence of Divinity. 91 422
Abilities & Skills
Visionary Pathway
Sōgetsu's primary power system is the Visionary Pathway, whose Spectator Sequences specialize in mental, spiritual, and subconscious influence.
- Uses Soothing to suppress emotional fluctuations and maintain composure. 6
- Combines hypnosis and psychological suggestion with Sharingan eye contact, including in combat. 2
- Can enter dreamscapes, control Spirit Bodies, bypass Mind Seals, and access deeper memories. 428
- At Sequence 2, can create a Dream Maze from the minds of living beings. 422
- At Sequence 2, uses Insight to identify mental weaknesses and determine what a target fears most. 422
- Can directly alter collective memories and perceptions after reaching Angel status. 449
- At Sequence 1, possesses Omniscience and a degree of Omnipotence. 480
Mind Manipulation
Sōgetsu's mental influence extends beyond ordinary genjutsu or hypnosis.
- Implanted suggestions into Kakashi after physically and psychologically breaking him down. 47 48
- Manipulated Danzō's Mind Island by altering and erasing thoughts, ultimately leaving Danzō conscious but unable to control her own body. 191
- Can plant subtle long-term influences and later activate them without additional prompting. 191
- Uses mental defenses and pre-arranged psychological suggestions to resist hostile mental influence. 479
Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan
His Uchiha dōjutsu is the foundation of his illusion-based fighting style and is strengthened by his Spectator abilities.
- Uses the Three-Tomoe Sharingan to cast genjutsu without opponents noticing when they were trapped. 28
- Awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan with little difficulty. 77
- Uses his Mangekyo ability to analyze techniques, including the Tailed Beast Bomb, Lightning Chakra Mode, and Hell Stab: One-Finger Nukite. 148
- Mangekyo use rapidly degrades his vision; after three major uses, his right eye suffers significant sight loss. 148
- Continued ocular overuse threatens complete blindness. 180
Susanoo
Sōgetsu can manifest a Mangekyo Sharingan Susanoo on a Tailed Beast-scale level.
- Forms a complete armored humanoid Susanoo from its skeletal stage in moments. 177
- Its eight-armed form resembles a Vajra Vidyaraja Statue. 178
- Withstood barrages of Eight-Tails Tailed Beast Bombs that devastated much of Konoha. 178
- Wields a straight-bladed katana capable of producing sword qi that tears open the ground into a canyon. 180
Ninjutsu and Combat
Sōgetsu combines high-level ninjutsu with exceptional speed, taijutsu, and battlefield control.
- Uses Wind Style: Eight-Part Light Wheel, a decisive technique against Rin, Dong Siren, and the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. 55 69 89
- Employs taijutsu enhanced by dragon scales and concentrated chakra strikes. 23
- Defeated an Elite Jōnin from Iwagakure through superior speed, taijutsu, Sharingan use, and Wind Release. 69
- Single-handedly killed a group of Cloud Ninja while sparing Killer B to deliver a message to the Raikage. 137
- Demonstrated and taught Chidori, Chidori Spear, and Chidori Senbon to Sasuke. 434
Word of Power: Time Zero
Sōgetsu can invoke Time Zero to drastically slow his perception of time and react before opponents can complete their attacks.
- Reduced the apparent speed of Sasuke's clones and attacks enough to counter each one with a finger tap. 429
- Uses the technique as part of his overwhelming speed and evasive movement. 429
Medical Ninjutsu and Psychological Therapy
Sōgetsu is formally recognized as both a medical ninja and psychological therapist.
- Registered Medical Ninjutsu and Psychological Therapy as Anbu skills. 4
- Treated Tsunade successfully. 9
- Uses psychological treatment as a means of intervention, though his methods with Kakashi include violence and implanted suggestions. 47 48
- Understands Medical Ninjutsu well enough to supervise Sasuke's hazardous lightning-based training. 434
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Moon Paper Figure — Substitutes for Sōgetsu against one fatal injury or spiritual attack; used to survive a Susanoo strike. 2 23
- Corrupting Words — Causes targets to hear terrifying roars and become infected with madness. 2
- Slumber Charm — Induces peaceful sleep after a short incantation. 2
- Hermes' Brass Candlestick — Extracts Spirit Bodies and can weave realistic dreams that draw other people into the same dream. 2

- Mutual Multiplication Explosive Tag Technique — Selected from Hiruzen's copied Scroll of Seals techniques due to its strategic value. 46
- 0-17 Hidden Angel / Hastur — A Sealed Object able to erase anything approaching it; Sōgetsu successfully contains and names it Hastur. 422
- Aleister Crowley’s Pen — Entrusted to the Secret Angel as an emergency measure while Sōgetsu investigates Groselle’s Travels. 479

Story Role / Major Arcs
Rise as Owl and Mr. Adam
After becoming a Sequence 6 Hypnotist, Sōgetsu joins the Anbu as Owl. He establishes the Church of Bones as a dreamlike meeting place, recruits Hatake Sakumo's surviving consciousness, and brings Orochimaru into the Twilight Hermit Society as Mr. Adam. 2 4 6
Uchiha Politics and Konoha Influence
Sōgetsu navigates distrust between Konoha and the Uchiha by performing the role of a sincere Will of Fire loyalist. He gains Fugaku's confidence, detects Black Zetsu at the Naka Shrine, and passes Hiruzen's loyalty investigation when Inoichi finds an artificially “pure and transparent” inner world. 14 67 71
Psychological Intervention and Chūnin Exams
He accepts Minato's request to help Kakashi, then uses provocation, violence, hypnosis, and suggestion to redirect Kakashi's grief. As a Chūnin Exam chief examiner, he designs psychologically extreme tests intended to expose fear and resilience, while building a reputation through overwhelming displays of strength. 45 47 48 52 67 69
Kirigakure Operation
Sōgetsu infiltrates Kirigakure, kills several members of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and gains notoriety as the Uchiha's “True Hope.” His feats transform him from a suspected Hokage-faction loyalist into an idol for younger Uchiha. 89 123
Third Great Ninja War and Hokage Candidacy
As Head of Konoha's Anbu, Sōgetsu rescues Kushina, massacres Cloud Ninja forces, and spares Killer B to carry a message to the Raikage. He later uses Susanoo against the Eight-Tails, commands Konoha's defense, and earns endorsement from Hashirama and Tobirama as Fourth Hokage. 137 177 178 183 189
Apparent Death and Return
On the eve of his inauguration, Sōgetsu disappears and is publicly found dead in Danzō's Root headquarters. The later revelation shows him controlling Danzō while arranging a substitute corpse and framing the Aurora Society narrative. He subsequently appears in an Impure World Reincarnation body, warns Tobirama about the Aurora Society, and asks for his name to be erased. 189 191 218
Angelhood and Later Mentorship
After reaching Sequence 2, Sōgetsu stabilizes himself through mass faith and expands his authority over dreams, minds, and perception. Operating as Uesugi Yue, he encounters Sasuke during a later Chūnin Exam, discovers White Zetsu's manipulation of her memories, and becomes her instructor. 422 428 429 434
Promotion to Writer
Sōgetsu enters Groselle's Travels, cautiously accepts Ankewelt's opportunity, verifies his identity with Adam afterward, and advances to Sequence 1: Writer. 479 480
Notable Quotes
“Who gave you the courage to meet the eyes of an Uchiha?” 28
“People don't want to understand the truth. They only believe what they want to believe.” 435
“I am a Spectator.” 71
Trivia
- Sōgetsu considers fame useful but uncomfortable, particularly when Uchiha admirers begin treating him as a near-messianic figure. 123
- Later legends about him are wildly exaggerated; Sasuke claims he fought through Kirigakure for three days without sleep and slaughtered every Seven Ninja Swordsman, claims Sōgetsu personally disputes. 428
- His most valuable safeguard against loss of control is not simply personal willpower, but the faith of hundreds of millions of believers acting as anchors. 422
