Background / History
Lu Mingfei attended Shilan Middle School and lived with his uncle and aunt after his parents sent him into their care. Cassell’s records describe him as withdrawn, timid, and socially isolated, with an unconfessed crush on Chen Wenwen 347 350.
Shortly before the Church of Bones incident, a childlike “Little Devil” named Lu Mingze began visiting his dreams. Mingze discussed soul bargains and the despair he expected Mingfei to experience, but Mingfei initially regarded him as an eccentric nuisance rather than a powerful being 329 331.
Appearance
Lu Mingfei initially has delicate features, black hair, and a seemingly slender build; his transformed appearance contrasts sharply with that ordinary-looking exterior 329 366 375 416.
- Eyes: Normally brown; turn brilliant gold when he exercises his authority. During his Rome awakening, their radiance exceeds that of other Dragon Race Golden Eyes 409 416.
- Dragon features: Develops scales, bone spurs, and jet-black wings as his power awakens 409 416.
- Facial scar: By the finale, a prominent scar runs from his brow to his lips 421.
- After combat: Arrives at Cassell covered in blood, bone fragments, and flesh, with lingering killing intent strong enough to intimidate Executive Department commissioners 376.
Personality
Mingfei’s early insecurity is replaced by confidence after the Church of Bones encounter and Adam’s training. He stops seeking Chen Wenwen’s approval, refuses to indulge his classmates’ insults, and confronts Caesar without being cowed by his status. His composure can conceal extreme aggression: he rejects Lu Mingze’s suggestion to kill his classmates because he considers it unnecessary, not because the idea horrifies him 347 348 349.
His training leaves lasting distress. Recalling Isshin Ashina makes him visibly tremble, while his return from the galactic-war camp is compared to that of a veteran with PTSD. Nevertheless, combat can also exhilarate him; the Free Day ambush brings back the familiar sensations of his training and prompts him to charge into battle shouting for the Emperor 349 372 380.
Beneath his brutality, Mingfei remains deeply attached to his companions. Believing Lu Mingze dead leaves him grieving, lonely, and willing to sacrifice himself for revenge. He explicitly values Mingze’s presence above the power he receives, and later offers to return that power if it would prevent their separation 403 410 414 421.
He repeatedly refuses soul bargains and has little interest in a throne. Away from battle, good food becomes one of his few pleasures; he even wants to cut short a meeting with Anger to reach the cafeteria’s limited pork knuckles 374 382 391.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Combat Instinct
- Defeats Isshin Ashina after repeated deaths in Adam’s training, developing his skills without access to his Dragon Bloodline 349.
- Moves too quickly for Guderian and Chen Motong to follow when countering Caesar, stopping two fingers at Caesar’s brow 348 349.
- Efficiently dodges and kills Death Warriors even while surrounded by dozens of opponents 375.
- Anticipates sniper fire and shatters a bullet with a katana before defeating the shooter with the blade’s flat 382.
- His instincts save him from lethal Judgment attacks, but cannot eliminate the enormous power difference 400.
Physical Strength and Amplification
- Lifts Zhao Menghua by the throat and holds him immobile despite his struggles 347.
- Uses fourfold amplification to propel himself from a ship with recoil strong enough to force its deck almost level with the river 366.
- Maintains enough stamina after fighting Uesugi Eriyi to carry Caesar while escaping 403.
- Reaches hundredfold and then two-hundredfold amplification against Pompeii; two hundred times is his limit before complete fusion with Lu Mingze 416 417.
- Even at that limit, Pompeii overpowers him and pins him with Gungnir 417.
Black King’s Authority
- Cancels Indra, Azure Thunder Control, Black Flame Prison, and Bloodline Connection by issuing the command “Cancel!” 416.
- Commands other elements through the element of spirit 418.
- After complete awakening, perceives flowing elements, airborne dust, and minute details of Pompeii’s body with exceptional clarity 418.
- Can negate lightning summoned through Pompeii’s Sequence status, despite that attack bypassing the Dragon Race’s usual power system 418.
- Lu Mingze states that no one, including himself, can defy Mingfei’s will 391.
Seven Deadly Sins — Alchemy Domain
- Opens and activates the sword set when Cassell’s Equipment Department has been unable to do so 350 366.
- Uses its Alchemy Domain to restrict Pompeii’s powers and conduct judgment 409.
- Embeds Pride in Pompeii’s heart, where it drinks Dragon Blood and cannot be removed before the execution ends 409.
- Summons Envy and Wrath back to his hands during battle 409.
- Attempts to execute Pompeii through the Sin and Punishment domain and Word of Power: Tai Hao; Zaratul’s intervention prevents the killing 409 410.
Field Awareness and Leadership
- Spots suspicious watchers at Chicago Train Station before Lu Mingze does 372.
- Defeats ten assault teams during Free Day and infiltrates their command center 381.
- Leads Cassell’s Rome operation and protects Chu Zihang’s identity by arranging matching masks for the team 393.
- Treats an injured companion’s wounds and organizes alternating watches while the group hides in Rome 403.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bronze Purgatory: Seven Deadly Sins — Seven alchemical swords forged by the Bronze and Fire King. After the Bronze Project, Cassell’s board directs that the set be entrusted to Mingfei 366 369.
- Chainsaw Sword and Black Box — Adam’s belated eighteenth-birthday gift, retrieved from a Chicago station locker. Its powered teeth cut through Death Warrior scales, but the sword is broken during the encounter with Judgment 372 375 400.
- Katana — An improvised weapon taken during Free Day and used to defeat the final sniper 382.
- Tang Sanzang mask — Worn during the Rome mission as part of the team’s coordinated Journey to the West disguise 393.
- Gungnir — Takes up Pompeii’s discarded divine spear to pierce his heart and kill him completely 420.
Relationships
- Lu Mingze — Little Devil — Dream companion and brother figure. Protects Mingfei in the Church of Bones, offers soul bargains, and later enables his complete awakening through fusion. Mingfei mourns his apparent death and desperately resists their eventual separation 330 331 403 417 421.
- Lu Mingze — human cousin — His uncle and aunt’s son, explicitly distinct from the Little Devil. Mingfei nearly twists his neck after returning from summer training 372.
- Adam / Uchiha Sōgetsu — Introduces Mingfei to the apparent script of his fate, brings him into the Twilight Hermitage, designs his training, and supplies the Chainsaw Sword. Mingfei is grateful when he learns Adam saved Lu Mingze 331 332 349 372 417.
- Chu Zihang — Former schoolmate, senior, and trusted combat companion. They coordinate rescues, share watches, and fight Pompeii together; Chu reassures Mingfei that stopping the Rome ritual was a success 338 399 403 411 416.
- Caesar Gattuso — Initially clashes with Mingfei during his interview, then becomes a trusted comrade. Mingfei helps rescue him in Rome and accepts his relationship with Nono 348 399 400 414.
- Chen Motong / Nono — Cassell interviewer and teammate. The notebook predicts an unrequited attachment to her, but Mingfei consciously rejects that path and treats her as Caesar’s girlfriend 330 368 414.
- Xia Mi — Senior and teammate whose identity as Jörmungandr he learns from the Dragon Race diary. Protects her during the Chicago attack and later sincerely congratulates her and Chu Zihang as a couple 375 376 421.
- Chen Wenwen — Former crush. His dependence on her approval ends after his dream experience and training 347 350.
- Anger — Cassell’s principal. Personally designates Mingfei an S-Class and entrusts him with the mission concerning Caesar 371 391.
- Fingel von Frings — Senior with whom Mingfei bonds over loss. Fingel listens while he recounts memories of the Little Devil 414.
- Jovian — Mother. Reunites with him in Anger’s office after years apart and embraces him while repeatedly apologizing 421.
- Pompeii Gattuso / Odin — Principal enemy in the Rome and Cassell battles. Mingfei disrupts his summoning ritual and ultimately kills him with Gungnir 410 416 420.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Church of Bones and the Fate Script
Mingfei and Lu Mingze are drawn into the Church of Bones within a dream they cannot control. A notebook describes a future in which Mingfei enrolls at Cassell, longs for Nono, and trades part of his life to save her. He is appalled by the dependent version of himself presented in the text 329 330.
Adam claims that Aleister Crowley’s Pen makes written stories become reality and offers the brothers a route to changing their fate through the Twilight Hermitage. The narration reveals that the pen he displays is a fake used to deceive them 331 332.
Cassell Recruitment and the Bronze Project
At the Regent Hotel interview, Mingfei’s transformed behavior alarms his classmates and interviewers. He reveals knowledge of Cassell’s purpose and counters Caesar’s attack before anyone else can follow his movement 347 348 349.
He later joins the Three Gorges mission, opens the Seven Deadly Sins, and severely wounds Norton with Wrath. Norton’s death makes Mingfei the Bronze Project’s leading contributor and a celebrated incoming S-Class student 366 368 371.
Chicago Attack and Free Day
On his way to Cassell, Mingfei and Xia Mi are forced into a Nibelungen by Hermetic Society agents. He fights through their Death Warriors, kills the leading agent, saves Xia Mi from a hostage attempt, and threatens the surviving agents into releasing the domain 373 374 375 376.
During Free Day, the Student Union and Lionheart Society jointly target him. He defeats their assault teams, eliminates Nono and Xia Mi at the command center, and wins the final sniper duel. His victory raises his reputation to rival Caesar and Chu Zihang 380 381 382 391.
Rome and the Summoning Ritual
Mingfei leads Cassell’s team to Rome to investigate Caesar’s conflict with the Gattuso family. A hotel ambush separates him from Lu Mingze and results in Nono and Xia Mi’s abduction. After rescuing Caesar, he struggles against Uesugi Eriyi’s Judgment and Ama-no-Murakumo 393 396 399 400 402.
A vision of Lu Mingze’s death triggers his recovery of power. Mingfei returns to confront Pompeii and interrupts the ritual intended to summon a cosmic entity, but Zaratul rescues Pompeii. Mingfei is severely injured and loses consciousness 403 409 410 411.
Cassell’s Final Battle and Parting
When Pompeii attacks Cassell, Mingfei confronts him with restored authority but is overwhelmed even with two-hundredfold amplification. Lu Mingze reappears, explains that Adam saved him, and initiates complete fusion. Mingfei awakens fully as Nidhogg and eventually kills Pompeii with Gungnir after Zaratul extracts the enemy’s Extraordinary Characteristics 416 417 418 420.
In their final dream meeting, Lu Mingze explains that he must leave with Adam to recover lost power and authority. Mingfei cannot return the power he received because it has permanently integrated into his soul. After waking, he finds Cassell being rebuilt, learns Xia Mi survived, and reunites with his mother 421.
Notable Quotes
“It’s nothing. I’ve killed mere dragons before. Things far more terrifying than that.” 363
“I don't want it, I don't want any power, I only want you!” 403
“I am not Him!” — Rejecting Pompeii’s identification of him with Nidhogg 416
Trivia
- The “Super Saiyan” transformation is Lu Mingze’s analogy for their 100% fusion, not a separate documented power system for Mingfei 417.
- His inability to resonate with Dragon script during the 3E Exam is attributed to his bloodline being too high, rather than too weak 391.
- Pompeii initially calls him the Black King’s offspring, while later chapters describe him as Nidhogg awakened; Mingfei himself resists being treated as the ancient Black King 409 416 418.
- Mingfei questions whether Adam’s training worlds are real, but the conversation does not resolve their nature 372.
