Background

Church of Bones and the Twilight Hermit Society

Adam first manifests in the Church of Bones, introducing himself to Orochimaru as the Master’s Agent and the “King of Angels beneath Him.” 5 He becomes the veiled authority presiding over the Twilight Hermit Society, presenting the Twenty-Two Divine Paths and directing members to seek the Blasphemy Stone Tablet. 203 204

His public image is deliberately overwhelming: members perceive him as a godlike being whose true form would drive lower-status beings mad. 239 240 Behind this role, Adam is closely tied to Uchiha Sōgetsu, who uses the identity to guide, recruit, and pressure the society’s prospective Beyonders. 202 204

Virtual Persona

Adam is a virtual persona created by Uchiha Sōgetsu rather than an ordinary independent human. To investigate dangerous entities safely, Sōgetsu can sever a persona’s mental connection to the main body, preventing contamination from spreading back to himself. 236

While scouting the Chaos Sea and the Blasphemy Stone Tablet, one such Adam is contaminated, develops gray-white scales and mutations, then destroys his own Mind Island to transmit a warning before losing control completely. 236 A later, more complete Adam is formed through consciousness fragments taken from tens of thousands of hypnotized people; this version possesses awareness, Sōgetsu’s memories, and Saint-level power. 263

Adam retains independent judgment despite his origin. When Sōgetsu disappears, he pauses Obito’s promotion, considers cultivating a replacement Spectator, and prepares a resurrection contingency rather than blindly continuing the existing plan. 270 He also openly considers Sōgetsu’s plan to confront the Corrupted Angel excessively risky, though he ultimately supports it. 424

Cassell College and the White King

In the Dragon World, Adam appears at Cassell College as Adam Ankewelt, a gentle psychologist officially rated only B-class. His recorded Word of Power, Mind Mirror Platform, is described as a weak, slow hypnosis ability, concealing his actual capabilities. 272 273

During the Brooklyn infanticide investigation, he profiles the killer from victim patterns, recognizes the enemy’s mental-control ability, defeats the Dragonized Hybrid George in direct combat, and uses combat hypnosis to drive George into deeper Dragonization for an experiment. 273 276 279 Principal Angers later reveals that Adam had seemingly appeared at Cassell from nowhere and once trapped Angers in an extended dreamlike battle before negotiating an agreement with him. 281

Adam’s White King lineage becomes the focus of the Fierce Ghost Association and its King General. 292 299 300 Following the events surrounding Herzog and the White King’s authority, Angers identifies Adam as the newborn White King. 318 321 322

Later Activities

After the Hokage-world Adam is contaminated by the Mother Tree of Desire, it enters hibernation within Groselle’s Travels, leaving White Zetsu an opportunity to betray it. 431 The sleeping Adam’s personality is later replaced by Ankewelt, making that particular incarnation untrustworthy to Sōgetsu. 479 481

Adam later investigates Shinnō’s consciousness at Sōgetsu’s request, discovering that Shinnō’s monstrous form resembles an offspring of the Degenerate Mother Goddess rather than a normal Mother or Moon Pathway Beyonder. 500 During this investigation, Adam becomes unreachable in the depths of the collective unconscious. 502 He is nevertheless later present beside Sōgetsu during Ōnoki’s failed Sequence Zero ascension. 529

Appearance

Adam’s usual appearance is that of a gentle, priest-like blond man: curly light-golden hair, a light-golden beard, clear pale-gold eyes, and simple white robes with a cross pendant. 263 As Adam Ankewelt at Cassell College, he commonly wears glasses and presents himself as an unassuming academic. 272 276
