Reputation and Recognition
- Earned through combat: Sakumo established his standing with his ninja blade rather than political connections. His swordsmanship also earned him the separate designation “Shinobi World’s Greatest Swordsman” 3 9 48.
- Respect from the Sannin: Orochimaru addresses him as “Big Brother White Fang,” partly through his friendship with Ling Tian. Tsunade and Jiraiya call him “Senior White Fang,” despite their similar ages 3.
- Public confidence: Before his failed assassination mission became known, villagers described him as Konoha’s strongest ninja and credited him with a perfect mission-success record 6.
- Anbu loyalty: His personal charisma makes replacing him politically difficult. Even during his defection, former subordinates hesitate to confront him directly 9 44 46.
- Fear outside Konoha: Other villages regard him as a “god of slaughter.” The narration states that shinobi encountering White Fang can abandon their missions and flee 81.
- Recognition despite disguise: Watermelon Fuguki identifies him from his Hatake swordsmanship and White Fang short blade, then retreats after blocking a single strike 81.
History
Service to Konoha
Sakumo fought on Konoha’s battlefields from the age of seven and eventually became Anbu Captain. His prestige placed him alongside the Sannin as one of the defining shinobi of his era, and he was widely regarded as a future Hokage 9 92.
On the Sunagakure battlefield, White Fang fought alongside the Ino-Shika-Cho forces and killed Chiyo’s son and daughter-in-law, Sasori’s parents. Ling Tian contrasts these achievements with the Sannin’s inability to defeat Hanzo 3.
Failed Mission and Public Disgrace
White Fang’s reputation becomes vulnerable after he abandons a mission to assassinate the Third Kazekage in order to save an injured teammate—the Third Hokage’s eldest son. An official letter claims that he squandered an opportunity to kill the Kazekage, but does not identify who supposedly created that opportunity. Ling Tian challenges both the allegation and the decision to assign a Special Jonin to such a dangerous mission 3.
The rescued teammate publicly blames Sakumo, and rumors turn the failed mission into an explanation for renewed war with Sunagakure. Some villagers condemn White Fang; others defend his decision to save a comrade. Restaurant manager Mitarashi Shiun challenges the critics to consider whether they would demand the same sacrifice from their own children 6 14 15.
Disillusioned, Sakumo returns the half-sleeve from a Hokage robe that he wore on his arm, rejects Hiruzen’s authority, and abandons both village service and his ambition to become Hokage. Hiruzen appoints Mitarashi Shishō acting Anbu Captain in his place 9 10.
Family Intervention and Defection
Sakumo’s despair brings him close to suicide. Ling Tian refuses to abandon him and eventually slaps him when Sakumo promises not to drag his family into the dispute, completing the system mission to “wake White Fang up” 2 16.
Ling Tian gathers Uchiha and Orochimaru support for making White Fang the Fourth Hokage. Sakumo reluctantly accepts his brother’s argument that decisive action is necessary to protect their family and allies 18.
The conflict instead escalates into open defection. Surrounded by Root and Anbu, White Fang demands an explanation and declares that the village will become his enemy if it refuses. He kills four Special Jonin with one sword stroke, then fights Hiruzen and several clan shinobi during the attempt to stop him 43 44 46 51 52.
With help from Hongsi, Ling Tian, and Dai, he leaves Konoha. He collapses outside the village, but Little Right secretly heals most of his injuries and restores nearly all his strength 57.
God Organization Operations
White Fang’s first documented mission after joining the God Organization takes him to Kirigakure with Hongsi. While Hongsi attracts attention, Sakumo uses shadow clones to attack clan compounds and elders’ residences, drawing elite defenders away while his original captures their targets 78 81.
The operation ends with Sakumo having killed two Kaguya and one Hōzuki and captured one younger-generation member from each of the Kaguya, Hōzuki, and Yuki clans 85.
Ling Tian later sends White Fang to the Land of Rain. His reputation remains a deterrent: Hanzo hesitates over confronting Ling Tian because retaliation from Sakumo could threaten his subordinates and leave him vulnerable to assassination 102 112.
Abilities Associated with the Holder
Hatake Swordsmanship
- Kills four Special Jonin with an ordinary slash reinforced by only a small amount of chakra 44.
- Cleaves through Hiruzen’s Great Flame Technique and destroys three fire dragons with lightning-charged sword arcs 46.
- Uses Swordsmanship—Lightning Flash to kill Yamanaka Chenba during a battlefield distraction 52.
Lightning Release and Speed
- Lightning nature transformation is identified as the key to his swordsmanship. The narration describes his speed as unmatched without Space-Time Ninjutsu, even by successive Kumogakure Kage 48.
- Stimulating every cell with lightning chakra lets him escape Shadow Possession and increases his strength, but severely damages his body 51 52.
- Limited chakra reserves constrain prolonged combat; against Hiruzen’s sealing barrier and combined elemental attacks, he focuses on holding his opponent in check rather than forcing a victory 48.
Stealth and Tactical Planning
- Concealment and assassination skills make him dangerous even to opponents confident they could defeat him directly 112.
- Uses shadow clones, diversionary attacks, and detailed knowledge of Kirigakure’s clans to separate defenders from his actual targets 81 82.
Equipment
- White chakra short blade / White Fang short blade — Sakumo’s signature weapon, carried on his back and used through more than a hundred battles. Fuguki recognizes it during the Kirigakure operation 6 17 81.
- Half-sleeve from a Hokage robe — Formerly tied around his right arm; relinquished when he rejects Hiruzen and his own Hokage ambitions 6 9.
- Rogue-ninja forehead protector — Worn during his fight with Hiruzen 46.
- Black trench coat and mask — Used during his God Organization mission in Kirigakure 79 81.
Political Impact
- White Fang’s persecution costs Hiruzen support among his students and the major clans. His defection becomes a central event in the collapse of the Third Hokage’s authority 72.
- During the postwar council, Torifu and Danzo insist that Hiruzen publicly answer for the incident rather than merely resign 64.
- Sakumo’s treatment remains a warning to other celebrated shinobi. Orochimaru openly questions whether the village might discard them or their loved ones in the same way 37.
- Later public accounts acknowledge that White Fang was forced out, although Danzo shifts primary blame onto Hiruzen’s faction and Sarutobi Shinnosuke despite admitting his own involvement 70 92.
