Background and History

Jie–Chan Discuss Dao

Guangchengzi entered the Jie–Chan Discuss Dao as the Chan Sect's primary advantage: a newly ascended Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal supported by Yuanshi's Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner and a talisman for the Five Elements Spirit Sealing Array 68 81.

He used the array to trap Yunxiao, Bixiao, Qiongxiao, and Zhao Gongming, draining their magic power. He then attempted to eliminate Bixiao and prioritized Yunxiao as the strongest remaining opponent 81 82. Lu Changsheng broke the formation, eliminated Guangchengzi's allies, and confronted him directly.

Guangchengzi's Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner and Purple Ribbon Immortal Robe initially neutralized Lu Changsheng's Heart Piercing Lock and Ling Yun Jian, while his Male Female Sword failed to penetrate Lu Changsheng's Indestructible Thunder God Body 86. Lu Changsheng ultimately used the Inverse Spirit Art and fused the Purple Heaven Spirit Sword Art with Shangqing Divine Thunder, breaking the banner's defense, destroying the robe, and taking the banner 87 88.

Refusing defeat, Guangchengzi burned his foundation for power and endured a prolonged humiliation until Yuanshi forcibly stopped the match and ordered him to concede 89 90. The damage to his foundation became a recurring obstacle to his cultivation.

Impersonation Incidents and Internal Strife

Seeking a Southern Bright Lihuo Origin to repair his foundation, Guangchengzi went to the Fire God Palace under Yuanshi's orders. Zhurong mistook him for an impostor who had stolen the origin and deceived him out of the Nine Nether Burning Devil Flame, then attacked and brought him to Kunlun for an explanation 105 109 110.

The incident worsened Guangchengzi's standing among his fellow disciples. Chijingzi openly criticized his loss in the Dao discussion and the trouble surrounding Zhurong; their dispute nearly became a fight before Yuanshi intervened 115. Yuanshi subsequently declared that the disciple with the best performance at the Demon Race Heavenly Court would be recognized as first among the Jade Void Twelve Immortals, placing Guangchengzi's position under pressure 115.

Xihe later accused him of taking the Ninth Golden Crow's Golden Crow Flame Origin. Guangchengzi denied ever visiting Tanggu, but the repeated impersonations damaged his reputation with both the Demon Race and the Witch Race 143 144 146.

Repeated Defeats

At the Demon Race Heavenly Court, Guangchengzi was challenged first by Feilian, then lost after prior battles left him depleted. Chijingzi's subsequent performance intensified Guangchengzi's belief that Yuanshi favored his junior brother, causing him to collapse from emotional distress 126 127.

He later fought Yunxiao on Golden Ao Island. Although he initially held an advantage, his old injuries resurfaced and Yunxiao revealed she had been using the duel as practice. After Yuanshi conceded, Guangchengzi violated the rules by attacking Yunxiao with the Male Female Sword; Lu Changsheng intervened and left him catastrophically wounded 173 174.

Yuanshi repeatedly treated his physical and primordial-spirit injuries, including with Three Light Divine Water. Guangchengzi's root damage, however, remained difficult to resolve 181 186.

Pursuit of Quasi-Saint Power

Yuanshi arranged for Guangchengzi to participate in the Blood Pool Competition, hoping its body tempering could repair his root. Guangchengzi was wary of the competition and of facing Lu Changsheng, but accepted Yuanshi's support, which included a spiritual-sense clone disguised as Qingxu Daode Zhenjun 199 200.

Zhurong eliminated Guangchengzi from the competition, severely injuring and capturing him. Zhurong's resentment was fueled by the earlier crimes committed by someone wearing Guangchengzi's appearance 216.

After Lu Changsheng was believed dead, Yuanshi gave Guangchengzi the Fantian Seal and sent him to Golden Ao Island to avenge Chijingzi and Manjushri Guangfa Tianzun. Lu Changsheng's return destroyed that confidence: Guangchengzi's temporary Quasi-Saint Middle Stage power-up and Fantian Seal could not withstand the Primordial Divine Sword Art, and he was left with a dangerous backlash when the enhancement faded 269 273 275.

Yuanshi eventually forced Guangchengzi's true breakthrough to Quasi-Saint through a spirit-gathering formation, the Bodhi Seed, the Heaven and Earth Cushion, and Saint-level protection. While the breakthrough succeeded, Yuanshi believed the externally forced advancement had largely destroyed Guangchengzi's prospects of advancing beyond Quasi-Saint Middle Stage 284 318.

East Sea and Later Humiliation

As a Quasi-Saint, Guangchengzi dominated Zhao Gongming during the contest for the Sea Calming Divine Pearls. Before he could seize the treasure, Lu Changsheng appeared, revealed Quasi-Saint Peak cultivation, shattered the Fantian Seal with a single sword strike, and severely injured him 320 322 323.

Guangchengzi later attacked Bixiao after she mocked him and used the repaired Fantian Seal to overpower her. Lu Changsheng intervened, effortlessly subdued him, handed him over to Bixiao for punishment, and took control of the Fantian Seal. Unable to endure the humiliation, Guangchengzi self-destructed; Lu Changsheng stated that he possessed a backup method, and Guangchengzi later returned to Yu Xu Palace in a newly formed body 365 367 375.

Personality

Guangchengzi is intensely proud of his position as Yuanshi's eldest personal disciple and the foremost of the Jade Void Twelve Immortals. He repeatedly treats status, cultivation, and sect prestige as proof that he should prevail, especially when confronting Jie Sect disciples 80 126 320.

His pride is paired with a deep inability to accept defeat. He burned his foundation during the Jie–Chan Discuss Dao, violated duel rules by using the Male Female Sword against Yunxiao, used the Fantian Seal despite a prohibition on magic treasures, and ultimately self-destructed rather than accept further humiliation 88 173 274 367.

Repeated defeats by Lu Changsheng eroded his confidence. He becomes fearful when Lu Changsheng appears, yet his resentment and concern for face repeatedly push him into confrontations he knows he is unlikely to win 187 199 322 341.
